Chapter One ~ Almost...

Len's eyes shot open, staring up at the darkened ceiling. That dream again... he thought, feeling his breathing heavy and his pajamas sticking to him. It was like watching the most suspenseful scene in a movie over and over, knowing something bad is going to happen but being helpless to stop it. That scene of the little red-haired girl walking with him to school, realizing she dropped her folder while crossing the street. The girl running over to get it, not noticing the crosswalk sign changed. The driver not noticing as she bent down, only seeing as she stood up, the small girl only able to look up with widened eyes, too shocked to move. Hearing his own voice call out as he looked back, panicked, as the driver tried to swerve around the girl but failing, spinning out and hitting the girl full force, sending her, with her lightweight body structure, flying and slamming hard into the streetlight's pole nearby. Then he would see himself, once the car stopped, running over as fast as he could eyes wide, panicked, as he kneeled by her to see if she was okay, having to back away as the blood, blending with her hair, started seeping from the wound...
Len shook his head, sitting up and rubbing his eyes. The dream had been coming back even more lately - this had been the third time that week, and it was only Thursday. He glanced at the clock - 12:30. Technically, it was Friday. It felt like he'd been asleep much longer...
Letting out a tired sigh, he laid back down, covering himself back up, his breathing having calmed down once more. He felt his golden eyes drift over to the nightstand, where a small glass bottle sat. It was corked tight, and inside was a rolled-up note. The one the girl had been planing to release into the sea that day. The thing they'd given him at the hospital, to hold onto, the one thing that seemingly wasn't damaged. He'd promised himself he wouldn't open it - he'd wait until the girl woke up. Yes, his friend wasn't dead, but she had gone into a coma. In fact, it had already been nearly a whole year - in two days it would have been exactly one year
Maybe that's why those dreams have been coming back... Len considered in his mind as he closed his eyes. By now, he had half-expected th girl to have already died, but luckily, she hadn't. She was merely stuck in a coma. He tried to silence his thoughts, hoping things would be better in the morning.

~+~..... .....~+~

Len was woken up, as usual, by the buzzing of his annoying alarm. He turned over, reaching for the device on the nightstand, and feeling for the "off" button before pressing it. Letting out a tired groan as he sat up, he rubbed his eyes. At least he hadn't been woken up by that dream...
After getting dressed and everything else, Len was out the door and walking to school. Since the incident, they'd made the crossing safer near the school, putting an officer at the crosswalk, both when school let out and in the morning when the children were arriving. The indigo-haired boy was lost in thought, both hands in his pockets and his head down as he walked. He was so deep in thought that he didn't hear his name being called until he saw someone snapping their fingers in front of his face, the girl that had been calling him standing by him.
Len shook his head, lifting it up and looking over to see his friend, Rosalii. "Oh, Rosa. What'd you need...?" he blinked, gold eyes now fixed on her.
The girl sighed, "You're really spaced out today, you know?" she shook her head. Len turned his head to face forward agaain, letting out a quiet sigh. "I'm aware...I was just thinking..." The girl walking by him looked back over to him, blinking as if realizing something before looking back to the sidewalk before her.
"Well, anyway, what I was trying to say was that we should go see her." At that statement, Len's eyes snapped back to the girl, widening slightly. "What brought on that sudden decision...?" he questioned.
Rosalii looked back to him, smiling. "Come on, its obvious that's what you're thinking about. Besides, she's like my best friend, and I haven't been to see her this week! I mean, what if she dies while I'm not there or something?!" she asked, voice getting frantic as she, as usual, overreacted, eyes wide.
Len let out a light chuckle at this, "You overdid it again, Rosa." he pointed out. Rosa stuck out her tongue, suddenly back to normal, laughing. "I know!" she spoke in a singsong voice, stopping at the crosswalk and waiting for the light to change.
"You know...its kinda hard to believe its already almost the one-year..." she sighed, referring to it nearly being the one-year anniversary of the accident. Len nodded, looking to the ground for a moment before Rosa spoke again, sounding outraged.
"Oh, that's just plain rude!" she let out an irritated sigh as she spoke. Len gave the girl a questioning look, then noticed what she was talking about. There were two officers at the crosswalk today. "Did they do this because of the one-year?" Len felt his eyes narrow.
"I wouldn't doubt it." Rosa huffed, folding her arms. The crossing light then turned colors, the two starting across the street. Once they were across, they were heading towards the steps of the school, though were interrupted when a familiar face came up behind Rosa and put their hands over the girl's eyes.
"Hehe, guess who?" the voice gave a carefree laugh, Rosa laughing along as she recognized the voice. "My god, Trace, you nearly scared me half to death!" she said as the black-haired boy uncovered her bright green eyes.
"Mission accomplished!" he laughed, grinning. Len gave a light chuckle, "Up to your old tricks, Trace?" he shook his head.
Trace laughed, about to reply when a red-haired boy walked up to the small group. "I'm not the only one ticked off by those officers, am I?" he asked, his voice coming out as a slight growl.
Len looked over to him, shaking his head. "No, I'm not at all happy about this either, Axel..." he said.
"W-well, this could be for another reason, you guys...!" Trace pointed out, trying to sound reassuring. Rosa nodded, playing along with it. "Y-yeah, could be!" she grinned.
Axel just shook his head, sighing. "No...its probably that..." he sighed. Trace then shoved his hands in his pockets, "Hey, you never know, dude," he laughed, "Zeke coulda done something again, y'know!"
Axel took this into consideration, nodding. "...Alright, yeah, I guess. Let's just see how it all turns out, alright?" he turned to face the school once more, away from the others.
Trace nodded, then a smirk snuck across his face. "Hey, I'll race you guys to Homeroom!" he took off at a fast run, laughing, much to Rosa's displeasure. "Hey! No fair, I'm wearing heels!" she protested, attempting to run after him.
Len smirked, taking off along with Axel, waving as he passed Rosa, the smirk still painted on his face. "Well, isn't that bad for you?" he asked in a teasing tone, letting out a snicker as he entered the school doors.
And so ended another morning in the little town. However, this town, no matter how ordinary it sounds at the moment, is nothing like you're thinking. This was a hidden city, cloaked by a magical spell, a sanctuary for those inhuman. All kinds of supernatural beings live there, from the humans with supernatural gifts, to those like vampires, demons, werewolves, fairies...anything you can think of. Even those like Aliens, Cyborgs, and Shapeshifters. And, normally, they all live together in peace. Especially the children, seeing as they all go to school together. However, as is human (and inhuman) nature, minor fights and difficulties break out from prejudices and such from time to time.
This is the story of the little "Gifted City" of Fable.
