As Midnight Grows
The dark clouds loomed over head. She sat there silently waiting. The full moon shone brightly, tempting her to go for a nice long walk in the darkest time of night but she didn’t. She had to stay right here. A bat fluttered across the deep endearing sky. She could tell he wanted her to come and fly away with him. To go to places only dreamed of in the worst nightmares only to be forgotten the next day and replaced with happy times and memories with friends and family. Just the thought of family made her want to die. Memories of watching happy parents and kids walking around joyfully in their local park, playing fetch with their Golden Retriever or Border collie flooded into her mind. Would she ever have that? She wondered to herself. Maybe one day. One day she could live a life like that, not worrying about anything but minor stuff such as a boyfriend or a pimple like a normal teenage girl. Oh how she longed to be normal. She would give anything, not as if she actually had something worth giving, to have a real family and real friends would drive to her in the middle of the night if she was hurt or in danger. But what she wanted most of all was to not be afraid anymore. She wanted to be able to go outside at night and enjoy it instead of fear it. One day… But for now, this was her life. She gazed up at the dreamy sky once again, mesmerized. The clouds were thick and gray. It was as if they knew what was coming. Her eyes traced the stars over to the moon. It was brighter than she had ever seen it before. She could make out all the different craters and dark canyons within it as it glowed with pride. It might be overruled by the bright sunshine of day but at night, it was the king. It ruled the sky and all the creatures of the night- including her. Around her, the bats dipped in and out, up and down, flying all over the sky, bouncing from star to star. She wanted to join them badly. They seemed to have as much fun as a blue jay, singing and flying around in the daylight, but she knew better. Suddenly her skin broke out in goose bumps. She glanced down at her hands and sighed at the sight of yellow nails. It was time. The moon would get its wish soon, as the depths of the woods devoured her once more for a night of terror. She tilted her head back knowing the pain would end soon. And then the fangs began to grow. They cut through her gums like razors, blood dribbling onto her lips and down her pale chin. The taste exploded in her mouth as she closed her eyes with enjoyment. She reached down for the cloak she had brought with her and thrust it over her shoulders, shoving her arms through the sleeves and buttoning it up. She pulled the black hood over her long dark hair and began to walk. The bats were beginning to chirp with excitement now but she concentrated on the soft crunch of the autumn leaves beneath her feet and the slight breeze of midnight chill. It was time for a snack and, not being able to control herself, she broke out into a run.
