part seven:

“Couldn’t I control the Ruby Dragon?” I asked.
“Won’t work; being an Elemental your power is light not darkness it would most likely kill you,” he answered.
“What about me?” Hawkeye asked.
“It’s possible your half Darkest,” Fireclaw answered nodding thoughtfully.
“Your also half Elemental, why would you put yourself in danger? I asked him. “Others may not have helped you but I’m not like that.”
“But that’s why I want to help,” he said.
“Well in any case Catra, you still have two more elements to work on so how about we go for a walk?” Fireclaw suggested.
He brought us into the forest and led the way through the chilly morning air. So much life had thrived here and now look at it, it was gone. Just like that this part of the forest had been destroyed. It reminded me of a graveyard, still and silent as if death had enclosed my village and this section of the forest in its’ skeletal embrace. I closed my eyes and silently prayed that I wouldn’t have to practice here. Reading my thoughts Fireclaw looked at me saying, “Don’t worry I have a different place in mind for you.”
Nodding I sighed in relief and I looked over at Hawkeye studying him in silence. His expression had changed, he was no longer soft eyed instead he held a dark and harden look with a grim but thoughtful frown. He held the power of two races in him making him a target for anyone looking to make a name for them. When he noticed me staring at him, he tried to smile but he couldn’t hide his uneasiness from me. I gave him an embarrassed smile and kept on walking. After about an hour of walking we stepped into a grassy clearing. I couldn’t believe me eyes, every tree and flower still lived even after the attack. I felt a strange power emitting from it, yet it also felt familiar to me and I realized why, it was Whitefeather’s power that I felt.
“This place is protected by Whitefeather, right?” I asked.
“Yes,” Fireclaw replied.
“Why isn’t Whitefeather your master?” I asked.
With a heavy sigh and a sour look he answered, ”Red-eye is Whitefeather’s brother.”
“What!!!!!! How can that be, Their two different races,” Hawkeye said.
“Their parentage is the same as yours. To be my master you have to be have a pure heart and there’s another reason but you’ll find that out soon,” Fireclaw said.
“Is that way Red-eye and Whitefeather want Hawkeye dead?” I asked.
“Yes, they know if Hawkeye were to ever gain the dagger he could be unstoppable,” Fireclaw answered.
“It doesn’t matter either way, I’m going to help you,” Hawkeye pledged. Looking at me, he gave a small yet sad smile and turned away. I wanted to go over and comfort him but just as I was about to Fireclaw stepped in front of me.
“Let him be, you have work to do,” Fireclaw said firmly.
The firmness in his voice surprised me but I didn’t say anything. Giving Hawkeye one last look I walked to a tree. It was one of the tallest and judging from it, the oldest. Placing my hand on the worn bark I immediately felt its’ life force. I also noticed its’ whispering voice as the wind rustled its’ leaves. Closing my eyes I listened as it transported me back to when the forest was still young.
I opened my eyes to find Fireclaw and Hawkeye gone instead the clearing was comempty with the exception of me. The whole forest was alive; flowers swayed in the gentle breeze as animals scurried about. The sun shone and birds sang without a care in the world.
“This is how the forest and the rest world looked like when evil was all but unheard of,” the tree whispered. “Here Darkest and Elemental enjoyed each others company and shared in the wealth and beauty of the world.” Above the clouds darkened and the forest grew quiet and you saw Fireclaw fighting the Ruby Dragon. Then came the day when two brothers were born belonging and yet not belonging to both races. Evil descended and two peaceful races became two warring sides.”
Then stumbling into the clearing I saw Whitefeather backing away from Red-eye, both were bleeding and appeared exhausted but held eyes for only each other. Stepping closer I saw Whitefeather had the Orb while Red-eye had the dagger, both were glowing eerily. They didn’t seem to notice you or perhaps you weren’t really there but when you looked back at Fireclaw you saw to your horror that he appeared to be losing. “Give up Whitefeather, you can’t win this. You can’t even control the Divine Dragon, look he’s losing,” Red-eye sneered.
Sure enough as Whitefeather looked up, Fireclaw came crashing down almost on top of Whitefeather. Luckily he had enough sense to get out of the way and Fireclaw landed with a sickening thud where Whitefeather had been moments before. I ran over to Fireclaw and placed my hand on his head. Immediately upon feeling my touch he raised hie head and looked at me. “Who are you?” he asked.
“A friend, you’ll meet me soon enough; rest now,” I said.
With a heavy sigh he laid his head down, glowed brightly for a moment then disappeared. The Ruby Dragon was also tired but not as badly as Fireclaw was. He landed next to Red-eye, as Red-eye sneered, ”This isn’t over.” He then jumped on the dragon’s back and flew off.
Whitefeather fell heavily to the ground sighing deeply. I walked over to him and sat down in front of him wondering if he could see me too. It didn’t seem like he could and I wondered why. However, I didn’t think on it long because Whitefeather lay on the grass and fell asleep. With nothing else to see I walked back over to the tree and whispered, “I’m ready to go now.”
