Felicia Von Helson's story
I grew up in Durem. Back then, there was nothing there a child could do. There was always people working construction, which made it a dangerous place to live. But mother couldn't afford to live anywhere else. She had recently lost her job, and didn't know what to do. Sometimes late at night, when she was drinking a lot, she would tell me things about her life, and how she didn't want me to have the same fate as she did. I loved my mother... I never really knew my father. He worked construction in Durem until it killed him. He was a quiet man, who took what he got and never complained or tried to make it better.
When school started in the fall, I was determined to do well, more than well, to make my family proud. I studied for every test, did every assignment, and scored every point available. Eventually, I had the highest grade in the class, and finally, the highest grade of the school itself.
I felt wonderful! I went to go home to tell mother of the news, when I saw policemen around my house. I tried to run in to se what was wrong, but they wouldn't let me in... ...It was my mother. She had gotten sick from the drinking and other medicines she took sometimes. They took her to the hospital to help her, they said, but I knew there was something they weren't telling me. I ran, and hid behind buildings, following the policemen to the hospital without them seeing me.
We traveled to far throughout the night, from Durem to Barton town to Aekea. I had never been so far on my own. Father once took me to Barton Town. He used to work in the Forums. That's how he used to bring home gold.
When we reached Aekea, the policemen took my mother into the hospital. I couldn't get in without them seeing me, so I waited until the path was clear. Inside the hospital, I asked a nurse where they took the lady they just brought in. She told me that she that they took her to the second floor, first hall with the door with the cross on the door. I ran down the halls with all my strength, up the stairs, down the hall and I stopped at the door with the cross. I was frozen. I knew what lied beond this door was not good. I gathered my strength and I opened the door.
Inside, my mother was in a bed with doctors all around her. I ran in. Mother! I screamed! Mother! Wake up! One of the doctors grabbed me and took me out of the room. "We've done all we can for her", he said, "I-I'm sorry..."
A woman took my hand and escorted me to a room with other children. I was still crying, the other kids were staring at me. ...Footsteps echoed in the hall. I left the room and saw a tall man in a trench coat. "I came as soon as I heard," he said. He looked at me. "Hello Felicia." he said. "Who are you?!" I yelled, angry with tears in my eyes. My name is Raphael Von Helson, I'm you uncle. Your mother was my sister." he said. "You will be living with me from now on." "I don't want to live with you!" I yelled. "Ah ha ha, settle down, everything is going to be alright." he said.
He took my hand, and we left the hospital...
