Today in my Intro to Health and Med. class, we went on a fieldtrip to Fairfax Hospital in VA to watch a live open heart surgery! It was awesome! All teh blood! All the Pusalting muscles! 0.0 They cut open this guys chest with a burner/vibrater thingy and then used a saw to cut open the guys sternum, cracking it in half until eventually, you could actually see the man's heart beating. Then they got it to stop beating so they could actually operate on it, so technically he was dead, but was being kept alive by this machine. At least for the next 3 hours. They ended up cutting open the man's legs to get clean veins to use and I was feeling sorry for when this guy would wake up. He went in for heart sugery and ends up with these 2 huge scars on his legs. All we knew about the person though was that he was a caucasion male, and 82 years old. Though at the time he was hanging from a metal crane that suspended him directly above the table by his cracked sternum. And when the heart had to be stopped from beating, they dumped ice on it, so he could still live later. It twas awsomeness! Until about 2 1/2 hours into it. Then it all looked like the same stuff they were doing before. Kind of like monopoly! Just ask Chiryoosha though! She was there as well. Oh and, *ninja* no sharks were harmed in this operation!
