The efforts of an Aspiring Artist People always ask me, "what is it like to able to draw? Could I learn to do these things?" I always give them the same answer, "Like any skill it takes time and a lot of practice, but anyone can learn."

Starting with the Basics
I have found through out all of my classes and studies and attempts at shortcuts, nothing takes the place of the basic shapes. Particularly in humanoid figures. I have tried and tried to skip the step where one draws ovals, circles, lines and squares to indicate the portioning in the body. Without fail I return to this simple technique. It allows for better posturing and poses of characters and helps keep everything in proportion. So simple yet so neccesary. It is a skill which once picked up, becomes an artists invaluble knowledge. I have even scolded my siblings for diregarding this practice, as they come crying for assistance in their doodling. My advice to the aspiring artist, is to pick up a few simplistic art books and to study the technique if they do not know it already. Mastering this skill should be far higher priority than shading and texturing since what are those if the figure itself is ill-portioned?
