Now in an ordinary high school, there was this one extraordinary guy; that every girl in that high school, dreamed of having. This guy was cute, cool and really funny, that’s why all the girls liked him. But, (there is a “but”) this guy didn’t take advantage of these girls, nor collect and select them.He did court a few, and have them as girlfriends, but because relationships don’t always last, he was now single again… And again, the girls were crazy for him, but like I said he didn’t get them all, for he, was actually a “shy-guy.” Now there was this one ordinary girl, in that ordinary high school, who was just as crazy for him as the others. She herself was cute and pretty, and with a sense of humor as well. But she never imagined herself being with the campus heartthrob, only in her dreams. That is why this ordinary girl devised a plan to get this extraordinary boy. And her plan to get him was like this… “Uhm, scuze me, you’re Den right?” “Yeah?..” Den turns around from his friends. (They were waiting in line to order lunch.) “I’m Kelly.” Kelly introduces herself with a big smile and a hand. Kelly walked up to the campus heartthrob in front of everybody from all levels right in the canteen. “Hi..” Den said, and he shook her hand. (Everybody stopped eating.) “Um, I want to talk to you about something.” Kelly moves her hair behind her ear. Den was shy but he wasn’t a snob. “What is it?” He asked. “Well, it’s like this, I have a friend..” “We all do.” Kelly gives out a flirty laugh and hits him. “You're so funny! No actually it's because, well, you see my friend she…she likes you!” Den smiled, but he wasn’t shocked. “Aren't you surprised?” Kelly asks. Den just nods and keeps on smiling. “Well, can you, you wouldn’t mind…just meet her?” (Den thinks about it) “Well, actually I’m-” “Not busy? Great, she’s on the third floor of this building, c’mon!” Kelly takes his hand and pulls him to follow her. D: “!” The two go up the stairs; sort of running and walking from time to time making them look funny. “(Pant, pant!) Where is she?” Den asked. “Wait, she said she would be here.” She checks her cell phone. “Whew...” Den sits down and leans on the wall. “Whew…” Kelly sits down with him also. Silence hit them as they tried to catch their breath. The two leaned below the Image of Mama Mary, at their side was the end of a hall that was open to the high view of houses and trees. In front of them was a vacant classroom, chairs and desks weren’t joined together. And darkness lurked in the rooms corners. “Kelly, right?” “U-um…” Kelly nodded with her lips pressed together. “What’s the name of the girl I’m supposed to meet?” (Kelly holds for a second.) “...Audrey, ‘she answers’ her name is Audrey.” “Oh.” After some waiting… “So Kelly, is your friend really going to come?” “Don't worry she'll come, unless she freaks out and turns back. After all I’ve done for her!” (Then Kelly thought of asking Den something. “You know a lot of girls here in MIS do you?” Den gave out a little giggle. “Hehehehe.” “Why are you laughing?” “Nothing...I do know SOME girls, but...” “But..?” “I don’t really know any of them.” “?” “I mean, I don know a lot of girls like me…” Kelly looks at him with a smile at his cockiness. (Den smiles too.) “But, I don’t know, they never really come up to me anyway. So how can I get to know them?” “Well haven't you liked any of them? So you can be the one to go to them?” “There are but…(scratches his head.) “But.” “Those are the ones who don’t like me.” “Oh…(Kelly understood when she looks on the ground nodding her head. Then she looks at him again and asks.) Are there really any?” (And they both laughed.) “Your friends quite long.” Den said. “..Yeah she is isn’t she? I’m sorry Den, I really thought she would show up.” “It’s okay. It’s just that I really have to go.” Den stands up. “Oh really? (Kelly stands up also.) Okay, I’m taking too much of your time anyway. Sorry a?” “It’s okay.” He prepares to leave. “Wait, can I have your number so I can contact you to see if you can meet her again?” (Den gets his cell and gives her his number.) “Okay, thanks Den!” Den leaves with a smile and a wave. And as he leaves… K: “YESSS!!!!” The next day, Kelly was home in her room wearing a sand and shorts. She was sitting on a chair with her feet up the table. She held her cell phone and twirled it around. She was thinking what to text Den, and the best thing she could come up with was: “Are you ready?” “Ready for what? Who's this?” Den was out by a mall hanging out with his guys. “Si Kelly ‘to, Do you wanna meet Audrey?” Den answered: “Ummm…” “Please? Audrey is really anxious to meet you. “Okay when?” “Hmmm…how ‘bout right now? At Big R? Okay? See you there!” Den shakes his head as he reads the message, but he smiles. They met at the mall, near the arcade. (Kelly, when she received the message got all excited and hurried to dress. Nothing extravagant, not too smile, just casual.) “So, where is she?” Den asks holding his cellphone. He was already there before when she came. They waked towards each other. Kelly had already seen him from a far and hid her cellphone in her bag. “Just walk with me for awhile.” She says. (She takes his arm, and Den goes with her.) Then, as they walk along the stores, “Wait, stay right there!” (Kelly pretends to try to pull somebody out from the side of a turn of a wall.) “What? Are you going to talk to him already? Why are you shy?” As Kelly was talking to herself, Dens eyebrows meet in curiosity. Then, Kelly tries to pull someone out of the turn. “C’mon! Come out already! You’re shy?! What's wrong with you, it's not in fashion to be shy anymore. And he’s actually really nice, just like you thought he’d be.” Den now stretches his neck. “Is she ok?” He asks. “Yes she is, but the problem is, (ugh!) she doesn’t wanna come out!” Den takes a step forward. “Stay there! What's wrong with you? She'll go ballistic!” Den backs off. “Um, Audrey? ‘Looks at Kelly and whispers:’ Kelly right?” (Kelly nods.) “Um, it’s me Den. Um your friend Kelly says you wanna talk to me?” (But there was no reply.) Um, we can go some place if you want to…are you okay?” Kelly turns her head away from Den and looks at the people. Then, a tiny voice was heard…It said: “Yess.” Den was relieved. “Good we have contact.” He whispered to Kelly. Kelly turns to him and smiles. “Um, if you wanna talk we can, go some place?” Kelly turns away form him again and looks at the people. “No…” The tiny voice said. A question mark floated on Dens head. “Maybe next time…” And Kelly shouts, “Audrey, wait! Don’t run! Come back!” Den rushed to see who she was. And he found out… “Boy whoever she is she sure can run fast.” Den looks at the long mallway. Kelly takes his arm again and turns him around. “Let's go, let's leave her! Let life take care of her!” “It’s okay.” Said Den. “Tsk! I'm so mad!” “Den puts his arm around her to comfort her. Kelly covers her face with her hair to hide her smile. “Forget her. Next time.” Said Den, and the two went by the mallway walking together…
One day the two were standing in front of the school eating ice cream like all the other people. It was dismissal time and for everybody it was time for dirty ice cream, siomai and fishballs, (and of course gulaman.) The food stand vendors ferociously prepared the orders, and the students, (including Kelly and Den) ferociously ate them… “So, ‘Den says’ you don’t like a relationship where the guy can’t give in for you?” “Yup! ‘Kelly says’ What I want is someone who understands me.” “Understanding uhum.” (Den nods.) “E you? What do you like in a girlfriend?” “Um…” “There's a lot of UM in your personality!” “Sorry all right?! Um…” “See?!” “(Den laughs)…(Tries not to say UM as Kelly was watching him) I think maybe the type that won't fool me.” “…” Kelly doesn’t say anything.” “One that's true; honest. Because I really don't like secrets being kept from me.” “Well what if she really can't say it?” Kelly wonderingly asks. “Why?” “If it's so embarr*ssing?” “In that case, I’ll understand, but I'm a little bit selfish, it must not have to do anything with me. I won't force her, if she doesn't want to tell, of course I have limits to her.” (Den was smiling when he said this.) “And…I want to be close to her, so I can know how she feels. And what she thinks about us…Like us…” Kelly was confused. “Wait a minute, like us?” “Close I mean.” “Oh…Ahhh! So we're close like this?!” “Well, I think so, but if you don't want…” (Pretends to leave.) “Wait, wait, (holds him) Just kidding!” (Den comes back.) “Of course we're close so sorry!” And Den laughs. Then, as Kelly finishes her ice cream, her eyes and attention mysteriously go away. Lost in the space before her. “Do you have a problem? It's like you're worrying over something.” Den asks Kelly. “Ah , no this is nothing…” “There you go again.” “It's too embarr*ssing!” “Okay, as long as it’s got nothin’ to do with me.” “Why are we a couple?” (She put her hands on her waist.) Den smiles and looks at her. “You...I'm going to tell you on Audrey.” “...” “You're trying to steal me away from her.” Kelly laughs. “Just kidding!” (She shakes him) “Just kidding? You're really a person that like to kid. Nothing actually just telling the truth.” Kelly hits him laughing... As time passed it was the two that became closer together. Three weeks had p*ssed and Kelly still didn’t show up. Kelly told Den to watch a movie with her... “What? But I thought we were going to look for Audrey?” (They were in the mall again, sitting on the ends of a bench.) “She’ll be there, behind us, she just doesn’t want you to see her yet.” Den opens his arms in wonder: “?” Kelly also opens her arms in wonder: “?” The two watch the movie. During the movie, Den kept on looking back to see if Audrey was there. “What's the matter with you? This is the good part, watch.” Den does. Kelly slowly leans on him his shoulder. And Den, does what a normal guy would do and puts his arm around her. Kelly covers her mouth with a hanky to hide her excitement. After the movie, the two came out. Kelly was very, very (very happy). But Den was scratching his head. “What’s wrong?” Kelly asks. “I don’t think I can do this anymore.” “?” “We go out, looking for your best friend! And it turns out it’s us going out on dates.” “…” “Why doesn’t she talk to me at school, even at elective cl*sses I don’t see her, is she a transferee? I never heard her name in my life, only yours since grade five. I’m even thinking maybe she’s from another school! Kelly, I know nothing about her, I only know about you…” The last words pierced Kelly in the heart. But the whole time Den was talking Kelly stayed silent looking on the ground. “Only about me?” (She turns around away from him.) “Kelly, I didn’t mean it that way.” “…” Den tries to take it back but Kelly was hurt. “It’s just that I feel bad for your friend.” “…” “Forgive me?” (Then Kelly starts to cry.) “I just wanted to be a good friend!” Den gets worried that people might look, which started to happen. “(Sob!) I don’t know why she’s never there, when she’s with me, she promises to show up but again she goes out on her word! And I'm beginning to feel ashamed in front of you! And do you really think this is EASY for me?! (Here it comes) WAAAAAHHHH!!!!” “Kelly! (Den tries to stop her) Kelly it's embarrassing!” “WAAAAAHHHH!!!!” “Kelly!…Okay fine, I’m sorry! I’m very happy to be with you, it’s better to be with you anyway.” Kelly stops from crying but her hands are still covering her eyes. “O what? Do you forgive me now?” Kelly turns around and faces him. “What's in exchange?” “I’m not rich but, Tokyo Tokyo?” “Which one?” “Sumo pork tonkatsu.” (A very large Japanese meal for two) “We still have to share?” “No, I know all of that will be for you. You're acting like you don't know that! (Kelly hits him.)…And any dessert you like.” “Sniff…” “You okay now?” (Puts his arm around her.) “(Holds his hand) Olryt let's go!!!” At school they were almost always together. When they weren’t together, people would come up to them and ask “THE question”. And they would answer: “Girlfriend? No, no, she’s just a good friend.” “Boyfriend? No, no, he’s just a good friend.” One time at school, Den was away from Kelly, (it was a rare thing, but Kelly was with her girlfriends.) Den’s friend was with him and it was his turn to ask Den “THE question.” (The two were at the boys CR fixing the “way they looked”.) “Dude, are you guys together?” “With who” (Den looks at him.) “Kelly.” “No dude, we're just close friends…actually the reason why we're friends is because she's trying to hook me up with her friend.” “Who?” “Audrey.” “…Audrey? Who's that?” “You also don't know her bro? She's the best friend of Kelly, she says she has a crush on me, hehe.” “Who's Audrey? Whad-she look like??” “…I don't know man, haven't you seen her here?” “No, even her name I haven't heard yet...” “…” “It's strange that we have a schoolmate that we haven't seen yet, this school is pretty small.”
Den realizes that his friend was right, Kelly was with her friends right now, but shouldn’t she also be with her best friend Audrey? And why don’t her friends know her also? “O, dude, I'll go ahead of you.” His friend leaves. “Right…” When Den got home, he brushed through his yearbooks since Prep and Kindergarten. He checked them all, until he saw…it was Kelly who sat beside him, waiting in line to get their individual yearbook picture taken; all the way back in grade three. “Hi, what's you're name?” Kelly asked. But Den didn’t answer. He feared this girl would make fun of him also. “…” “Why are you crying?” The girl asks. And Den remembered; he was ugly then, very ugly. When he was young he was always made fun of, laughed at, and was treated as a loser. He was toothless in the front, almost black, fat, short, and his b*ngs were cut straight at the forehead. He cried because every time they would get their pictures taken, his cl*ssmates would laugh at him because he was so ugly. They even called him… “Mr. Personality.” “…” “Don't cry, when they take you're picture, just smile.” Den looks at the sweet-looking girl. “I don't think you're ugly.” (Smiles) Den fell immediately in love with her. When it was his turn to get his picture taken, he smiled with all his heart, and to his surprise, nobody laughed at him. But when he was going to say thank you to the girl after the picture taking, his parents took his hand and took him away, all the way abroad… He came back seven years after. He never remembered her again, not until now… The next day, Kelly and Den were sitting on the gr*ssy soccer field of the school, watching the sunset together…they didn’t speak to each other, but they were at that stage where it was okay. But this time was different. Kelly was curious at Den’s subtle smile and wondered what he was thinking. “You know? ‘Den says’ I like doing this. (Kelly looks at him) I like you and me, together… its like everything is more happier...” (He lies down on the gr*ss with his hands behind his head.) “…Yeah, me too.” (She lies down on the gr*ss also.) Den looks at the red and orange colored clouds against the baby blue sky behind it. “Kelly?” says Den. “Uhm?” she answers. “…What happened to your friend, Audrey?” Kelly’s blood flew up to her head! She couldn’t answer… “Hm?” She whimpers. “Nothing really, I just don't know if she still wants to talk to me or not. It's like our goal was never reached, no?” “Um, Den…” Kelly tries to explain and rises up on her hands. “What is it?” Den asks. “Because Den, (tries hard to say it, and succeeds, in saying something.) “Audrey…WENT TO THE STATES!” She nodded while she told him. (Den looks at her. He just looks at her. For someone who doesn’t answer back this was the longest one for Kelly.) “What?” Said Den, he got up also. “She went abroad. I’m sorry Den, I-” But Den didn’t let her finish. He stood up, and he started to walk away. “Den, where are you going?” Den looks at her and says, “…Away.” “…” Kelly didn’t have the strength to go after him, to go after the boy who grew up to be the campus heart-throb. Her heart-throb. She felt bad about what she did, because she lied. She tried to hide the truth and now Den was mad. Probably Den knew the truth already and was willing to forgive her. But lying after another lie only made him angrier. And so…Kelly left too. The two didn’t speak to each other anymore. At school everyone was talking about it. How the two “broke up.” But they said, “No, we didn't become a couple.” And that was the only thing they said to them, other than that, nothing else. For the two both didn’t have it in them to speak to anyone, or talk even. Because they felt, they had lost something... One day, as cl*ss was dismissed, it rained hard. And everybody scattered because they couldn’t go home. It was a fun day with nothing to do but fool around, but not for Den and Kelly. Kelly followed her cl*ssmates to the canteen, but after awhile, she felt she wanted to be alone, so she took the rain and ran to the soccer field. By the soccer field in front of its netted wall, was an oak tree. Wet, she took cover there. She didn’t know that Den was just on the other side; he was also wet. For a long time they just stood there, not knowing the other was on the other side Then, Den thought of leaving already. But when he took the first few steps…He saw- “…” “...” -Kelly, and Kelly saw him. The two didn’t say a word to each other. But neither of them tried to leave. Both tried to say: “I’m…you? No, me…wait…ahehehe.” Both laughed as they tried to say the same things. Den tries to leave. “Den wait!” says Kelly. And Den does. He always did what she said. “…I’m, sorry…” “…” “Audrey never left for the States, the truth is…she isn’t real. “…” “I made her up, for reasons, of my own. You might not remember, but in grade three. Oh, never mind…” “…” “I just wanted to say, I’m really, really sorry. I just didn’t think a guy like you would go for an ordinary girl like me, so I made a plan. It was a stupid plan that I shouldn't have done. And I’m sorry for it.” “…Kelly-” “Wait, let me finish!” “!..” “Now we don’t talk anymore, and I feel sad about it. But there’s nothing I can do, because it’s my fault anyway…so, I guess I have to go.” Kelly starts to leave. But as she does, Den stops her by holding her hand. Kelly doesn’t look. But Den does. “!” (Den pulled her toward him and kissed her.) “…” “…” After, he looked at her and moved her glossy wet hair to the side and said. “It’s all right. For whatever you did, was right.” “?” “I remember what happened during that year, and I’m sorry I had to go away. But now I’m back, and I would've remembered the reason I wanted to return. It wasn’t because of the cl*ssmates that made fun of me then…” “…” “It was you.” “(Smiles)” “I love you…” (Kelly felt butterflies go crazy in her stomach. Then she asked him something) “Does this mean, we’re friends again?” “(?) Didn’t you hear what I just said?! I just said I love you!” “(Kelly laughs and says) …I love you too…” The two danced and laughed together in the pouring rain, holding each other’s hands and turning each other around…they were happy…for that was- THE eND
