This is Chapter One of a short story/novella that I plan to update weekly. Wish me luck... wink

Chatper 1-Aidoann
Keep running. Her master's last words were seared into her mind. No matter what you see, what you hear. The old man had been terrified, no matter how he tried to hide it. And that had terrified her more than anything. Master Aimont was never less than perfectally calm and collected.

It was raiders. She'd know from the moment she was shaken awakeby her master. She'd oppedned her mouth- to complain? to question?- then closed it again silently. The look on his face demamded silence and instant obedience. Quickly. Dress, and take up your staff. I will have supplies ready for you.

She took him at his word. There had to be great danger to put that great terror in the master's eyes. Quickly dressing in her warmest clothes, she took up her staff of power and headed into the main room of the simple cabin. A look around told her the whole grisly story. This area was used to treat the injured and ill, and she could not remember when there had been more people- or more blood. Seeing her master, she went over to him. He caught her eye and motioned at a table, where she saw a bag.

Shield yourself well, girl. And- say the prayers for us. Her master commanded. Above all, run, and keep running till daybreak. Don't stop. Don't turn back.

And so she ran. Untill daybreak, when she found a stream where she could rest. Removing her claok, she took a drink from the stream, then dug in the bag to find food. Logical items, really. Trail rations, a bedroll, her healing supplies. Then, while trying to put the bedroll back in, she realized that something was wrapped inside the blankets. Taking it out, her breath caught. It was one of only three copies of the Sacred Scrolls.

Putting it carefully aside, she grabbed another ration bar, but stopped when she noticed the different texture, even through the paper wrapping. Opening it, she gasped, all thoughts of secrecy forgotten. The package contained an item she'd though she wouldn't see for years. The symbol of Healer, the heavey, jewelled pendant that showed the high status of the wearer. There was a note attached-

Aidoann-
Find the Others. Avenge us

The Others. The other young apprentices who were destined to carry the faith of the village. But vengance was against every moral code she'd ever heard or memorized. Confused, she carefully repacked her bag, and donned the pendant. Then, she turned to return to the village. She'd say the prayers for her people. If the Carriers had escaped, they'd be there as well...

What'd ya think so far? Please comment!
