Chapter 6

Jareth and Becka continued to walk in the garden, until Jareth stopped. He turned to face Becka. “Becka, what’s wrong?” he asked. She looked away glaring at the ground. “what do you think is wrong? You kidnap me and take me to the Underground against my will. What do you think I am? One of the siblings that someone wished away?!” Becka’s voice rose with anger as her feelings began to lash out. “I brought you back here because your mother told me to take care of you.” Jareth said looking in her beautiful bluish purple eyes. Becka glared at him. “you left me on my own for a year!” she snapped. “surely you could have left me alone for good!” Jareth’s face grew hard with anger and pain. “I left you alone, because I wanted to give you space. I rarely checked in on you because it was to painful to watch you living without me. I wasn’t able to face you until now.” he said, his voice growing slightly softer. Becka glared up at him. “y-…nothing.” Becka began but stopped herself. Instead she turned and started walking away.

Jareth was furious at her. ‘how could she?! After all I‘ve done for her! She is not getting away from me that easy again!’ Jareth thought. Jareth reached out and gently grabbed her shoulder, causing Becka to cry out in pain and flinch. All anger left Jareth when he saw her in pain. He was immediately by her side, confused and worried. He knew he didn’t grab her hard enough to hurt her. “Becka, Becka I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you.” he saw Becka clutching her shoulder and rubbing the back of it. “it wasn’t you.” she whispered. Jareth frowned in confusion, then he walked behind Becka and pulled back the shoulder of the gown, only slightly so he could see what the problem was. There on Becka‘s shoulder was a nasty purple bruise that looked as if it was just beginning to heal. A bruise that could only be caused if someone had been beating on her. More often then what Jareth witnessed last night. “I do not remember that man beating anywhere other then your face.” Jareth said softly, confusion in his tone. “that wasn’t from last night.” she replied quietly, then walked over to sit on a marble bench. She kept her head down, trying to hind the shame and humiliation that was plastered on her face from the fact that she was being beaten on a regular basis. She didn’t want Jareth to see what a failure she was at running her own life. Jareth’s face fell. He knew what she meant now. Carson wasn’t only beating her last night, he had beaten her before. Many times before.

Walking over to her Jareth sat next to Becka, inwardly kicking himself for not checking up on her more to detect this sooner, and preventing it from happening, and keeping any harm from coming to her. Jareth gently rubbed Becka’s back as a sign of comfort and security, being careful to be gentile so as not to hurt her wounds. “why didn’t you call for me? I would have come, you know that.” he said softly. Becka heaved a sigh. “I didn’t want to face you again. I didn’t want to get hurt by…” Becka trailed off, as tears began to fall down her face. Jareth looked at her. “go on.” he urged gently. Becka took in a huge breath as she fought back tears and continued. “I didn’t want to see you again, because it was to painful. I know you love my mom and-” “what?” Jareth interrupted Becka in disbelief. Becka turned to look at him. Jareth couldn’t tell if it was a look of pain or anger. “you love my mom.” she spat bitterly. Jareth frowned lost in confusion. Becka gave another sigh. “I know you loved my mom, but I don’t want you to love me, just because I am her daughter, or because you feel like you have to.” Jareth starred at her in disbelief. “you mean, you think I love you just because you were Sarah’s daughter?” Jareth asked in shock. Becka nodded as more tears spilled down her face.

“Becka, I not now, nor have I ever loved you because you were Sarah’s daughter. I love you for you. If I had the choice between you or Sarah, I would choose you in a heart beat. How could you ever doubt my love?” Jareth responded. Looking up at him she scanned his face. “things were moving so fast back then. I thought you loved me because my mom was gone and you missed her.” Becka said quietly. Giving a small smile Jareth responded. “no. I have more control over my emotions then that. I got over my grief for your mother faster. Since I am immortal, grieving for someone can take a life time. I didn’t want to waste a life time moping around mourning over my loss. However I should not have approached you like that so quickly. You had already been through so much and were still grieving the loss of your mother. I was wrong.” he said softly, turning away from her. Becka saw this and took his hand. “no Jareth, I was wrong.” she said looking up at him.

He turned to her, his face filled with confusion. “what have you done that was wrong my dear?” he asked confused. “because I didn’t admit…my love for you.” she replied. Jareth felt as if someone had just slapped him in the face. “you…what?” he asked softly, not daring to hope that what he heard was true. Becka gave a smiles. “I never admitted my love for you. I love you. That’s why I didn’t call out to you. I couldn’t face you because it was to painful. And because I thought you didn’t love me anymore. I couldn’t…I couldn’t face you knowing that you didn’t love me anymore.” Jareth only drew her into a loving embrace. She loved him. That’s all that mattered. An entire year of sadness and grief, and he finally got to hear those words willing from her mouth. Jareth pulled back and cupped her face in his hands. “I could never stop loving you.” he whispered. He kissed her passionately. A long, loving, passionate kiss. Oh how he had longed to do that for a year. Becka brought her arms up around his neck and returned the kiss whole heartedly.

Finally Jareth forced himself away, panting slightly. “Becka, there is something I need to ask you.” he said. Becka smiled at him. “anything.” she replied. Jareth took a deep breath and got down on one knee. A formed a crystal in his hand, which turned into a small, familiar black velvet box. He opened It and held out the familiar silver crystal ring to her. “Becka, will you marry me?” he asked. Becka smiled at him, not taking her eyes off of Jareth’s. “yes.” she said quietly. Jareth wrapped his arms around her and gave her another long loving kiss.

Chapter 7

Carson had been sitting on his couch in his apartment reading the book Casey had given him entitled Labyrinth. He finally reached the end of the book, the part where Sarah was confronting the goblin king: ‘give me the child.’ ‘Sarah be where. I have been generous until now.’ ‘generous? What have you done that’s generous?’ ‘everything! Everything you’ve wanted I’ve done. You asked that the child be taken, I took him. You cowered before me, I was frightening. I have reordered time, I have turned the world upside-down, and I have done it all for you. I’m exhausted from living up to your expectations. Isn’t that generous?’ ’through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered. I have fought my way here to the castle beyond the goblin city, to take back the child you have stolen. For my will is as strong as your, and my-’ ’stop! Wait. Look Sarah. Look what I’m offering you. Your dreams.’ ’and my kingdom as great.’ ’just let me rule you and you can have everything you want.’ ’for my kingdom as great…crud! I can never remember that line!’ ‘just fear me, love me, and I will be your slave.’ ‘you have no power over me!’

Carson put the book down once he had finished. Everything that happened in the book couldn’t have been real. Casey and Becka were both mad. Carson thought about these things, then he decided to try it. If it didn’t work it wouldn’t make a difference, however if it did work it would lead hm strait to Becka. “I wish the goblins would come and take me away…right now.” Carson waited. Nothing. He gave a sigh of relief and leaned on the back of the couch. It was just a stupid book. Those things weren’t real. Suddenly there came a scratching noise from the floor. Carson froze. “it’s just rats. Stupid vermin. The manager really needs to fix that.” Carson muttered to himself trying to relaxing. Then he heard more scratching. Not just scratching but whispering, footsteps, breathing, crawling all these noises closed in on him as he sat on the couch in his apartment. Carson began to sweat. He looked around, all over the place.

Suddenly he felt something leap onto the back of his head, and then it happened. All the creatures that had been lurking around the room appeared from everywhere and closed in on him. Pressing against him, pushing him, pulling him, climbing on him. Soon he was engulfed in goblins. He tried to free himself, shouting at them to get off. Finally they scurried away from him as fast as they came, and Carson was left alone. He looked around the room in shock. He was no longer in his apartment. He was in a stone throne room. The kind that you would fine in those old fashioned medieval castles. Then he heard footsteps entering the room, and he turned to face them.

The footsteps belonged to Jareth who stepped into the throne room with Becka’s arm linked in his. They were smiling, that is until they saw Carson standing in the throne room. Becka let out a blood curdling scream of terror. Before Jareth could do anything to help her she fainted. Jareth caught her in his arms. Carson rushed to her side, but Jareth held up one of his hands and an invisible force sent Carson flying across the room and slammed him against the wall. Jareth called for Hoggle and a few other goblins. He ordered them to take Becka to her room and to fetch Lassia to look after her. Once they disappeared with Becka Jareth turned to Carson still pressed up against the wall from the invisible force. Jareth marched right up to Carson until he was inches from his face. He grabbed Carson’s shirt and held him in the air.

“how did you get here?!” Jareth asked menacingly. Carson was still trying to take in everything that had happened. “I…I…I…” Carson was speechless. Jareth gave him one good shake. “talk!” he yelled at him. That brought Carson out of his trans. He glared down at Jareth. “I wished myself here so I could find Becka.” he told the goblin king. Jareth dropped him to the floor in his rage. “stay. away. from. her.” Jareth growled menacingly into Carson’s face. Carson got up onto his feet and glared at Jareth. Jareth glared back. Carson gave a small smirk. “I fully intend to take Becka back with me.” he said, knowing that this would make Jareth mad. Without warning Jareth brought his hand up to strike at Carson but found he couldn’t. for some reason some invisible force was keeping Jareth from harming this horrible man.

Jareth jerked his hand from the invisible force and had a look of confusion. Then he remembered. By the rules of the Labyrinth he could not harm a person who wished themselves away until they had finished the labyrinth or failed. Until that time he couldn’t harm a hair on their head. Jareth gave a small sigh. “by the rules of my world, I cannot harm you until you solve the Labyrinth and leave, or until you fail the labyrinth and belong to me.” he told Carson with bitterness in his voice. Carson was slightly pleased at this news. “show me to your labyrinth.” he said with a flourish of his hand, and a smug smile on his face. Jareth glared at Carson. He gave him such a hard stare that Carson fell back a step. “you have 13 hours to solve the labyrinth before you become one of us forever.” Jareth said. Then with a flick of his wrist Carson found himself outside the gates of the labyrinth. Carson gave a sigh and began to walk towards the gates. “let the games begin.” he said to himself.
