Chapter 1
Becka was shocked. “w-what…did you say?” she asked Jareth bewildered. Jareth blinked in surprise. “I said, will you marry me? To be my queen, and rule beside me. I love you Becka, please say you will.” his eyes were pleading as he spoke. Becka starred at him confused and shocked. “I…I don’t know what to say.” she whispered. Jareth’s face went cold. He was so sure she would say yes right away. However she had been through a lot these past several weeks, and he knew that she was still trying to grasp everything that has happened. Jareth took her hand. “you don’t have to answer me right away. I will wait. I will wait for you Becka.” he told her softly. Becka looked away. “I…I need to be alone…for awhile.” she said softly, hiding the tears that began to fill her eyes. Jareth patted the back of her hand and stood up. “as you wish.” he said gently. He set the small black box on Becka’s nightstand and left the room.
As soon as he, left Becka let the tears escape her eyes. Everything was happening so fast. It was over whelming to her. Becka hugged her knees to her chest and looked at the black box sitting next to the bed. She reached over and took the black box. She looked inside at the beautiful ring that lay in it. It was perfect. Becka knew it would fit her perfectly. As she continued to stare at it, her eyes filled with tears once more. Then her sadness and confusion turned to one of anger. “does he really love me? Or does he still love my mom?” she asked herself bitterly. She slammed the box down on the nightstand next to her. The tears still flowed down her face, as she was glaring at the wall. She was so confused. Was Jareth offering himself and his kingdom because he loved her, or because he still loved her mother, and felt obligated to do this for her? Deep down she knew she loved him, but did he love her? Becka thought and thought for hours. Finally Becka knew what she had to do.
With a heavy heart, Becka got up from the bed and got dressed. She chose a simple gown so as not to disturb the wounds that were still on her back. She placed all of the belongings she had arrived with inside her backpack, and grabbed the small black box from the nightstand. With a heavy heart, Becka looked around the room one last time. Then she walked out of her room, and headed for the throne room. She knew that was where Jareth would be.
Sure enough she opened the door to find Hoggle sitting on the floor starring at the goblin king pacing back and forth. When they heard the door open both their head turned to see who had come. Jareth’s eyes lit up when he saw Becka, but immediately sank once he saw the backpack she was carrying. Becka gave Jareth a emotionless hard stare. Then she spoke. “Hoggle I need to speak with Jareth alone.” Becka told Hoggle without taking her eyes off of Jareth’s gaze. Hoggle nodded and scurried from the room, sensing the tension in the air. Becka and Jareth were left alone. Jareth kept glancing gravely at Becka’s backpack. Then he finally broke the silence. “I see you are well.” he said quietly. Becka nodded and walked towards him. She was not cruel, but she was not welcoming either. “Jareth,” she began and gave a long sigh. “I want to return to the Aboveground.” she said. Her words felt like someone had punched him in the face. “w-what?” he asked, hoping he had heard wrong. Becka looked at the ground. “I wish to return to the Aboveground. I need time away from here. A very long time. Things have been happening to fast lately, and I haven’t had time to grasp them. There is up there I know is worried about me, and I have an education to finish.” she told Jareth not looking at him. Jareth only starred at her dumbfounded. “and…what about my offer?” he asked afraid of her answer. Becka sighed, but did not look at him. “I…I can’t except.” she said, and held out the small black box.
Jareth’s heart shattered into a million pieces when he heard her words, then he looked at the box she held out to him. Why was she doing this? He wondered. He reluctantly took the box. It felt like a huge weight as he held it in his palm. “I see.” he said softly. So softly that Becka could barely hear him. Jareth took a deep breath, as his face hardened. “I will make arrangement for your return. However I need to make sure you will be well taken care of, and-” “I have a friend that I can room with for awhile.” Becka interrupted. Jareth sighed. “are you sure this is what you want Becka?” he asked, hoping she would say no. Becka paused then answered. “yes.” she said. Becka bit back tears. She did not want Jareth to see her cry. She wanted him to give up on her, as she was trying to give up on him. “very well then.” Becka looked up to see Jareth’s face, but he was gone. She looked all around her and realized she was in her house. Her house Aboveground. The Underground was gone.
