Thoughts on the Harry x Draco Pairing
IMPERFECTION
The Introduction// in·tro·duc·tion - Something spoken, written, or otherwise presented in beginning or introducing something.

The first few things I would like to say, is that this Essay's purpose is not to sway anyone's opinions on how they view these two characters, but to state and proclaim my perspective on this relationship that I enjoy to ship. Anyone who agrees or disagrees with what I have written here are entitled to their own opinions. I would hope to not recieve emails from disgruntled fans, who obviously think that my views are wrong or inaccurate for they are *my* thoughts. So, if you decide to read forward, I hope you take into consideration what was written above. On with the Essay...

The Beginning// be·gin·ning - To take the first step in performing an action; start.

My love for H/D slash all started where most would think, with the books. I started reading the Harry Potter series during the summer of 2001. After getting into the first few chapters of the Sorcerer's Stone, I was introduced to an interesting character by the name of Draco Malfoy. His introduction to Harry takes place in Madam Malkins, a robe shop in Diagon Alley, and I remember thinking to myself: "A friend for Harry!" Since this is the first person Harry meets, that is his age in the wizarding world after learning that Harry himself is a wizard.

But after his encounter with Harry, which did not go as smoothly as Harry had hoped, I began to be intrigued by Draco's character and wondered what trials and obstacles Harry would have to face involving him throughout the series. As the books progressed, we see Draco Malfoy's character growing in his place as Harry's rival. In each book, he gets more vile, more ruthless, more demeaning in his actions towards Harry. Enjoying each book, one after the next, I quickly grew fond of this character that was hardly apart of the books, but much apart of Harry's building as a character.

After finishing the ever-entralling fourth installment, The Goblet of Fire, I discovered the popular subject of Harry Potter Fanfiction. I, myself, am a romance person. Yes, I admit it. So as soon as I discovered that there was fanfiction regarding this fandom, I immediately started to pair off Harry with people from the books that I thought would make an excellent pairing. To my dissapointment and surprise I realized there were not many people that suited Harry like I would have wanted. Hermione just didn't do, and even as Cho Chang was introduced to Harry in the fourth book, I did not see her as 'compatible'. After scrolling through many fanfictions with lots of different pairings, I came across a story labled: "H/D Slash". Since I was new to the fandom, I didn't exactly know who that was, so when I figured out who that involved, I was completely overwhelmed, Draco was the perfect person for Harry! Thus, began my start in Reading H/D slash.

The Pairing// pair·ing - One object composed of two joined, similar parts that are dependent upon each other.

To take a liking to this pairing, you have to approach it with an open mind. Something alot of people don't have. Luckily for me, I do, and this couple blew me by storm. Of course, the onslaught of magnificent fanfiction with their authors and marvelous plots, it wasn't too hard. But you have to understand for me it was weird, because I had never viewed Harry nor Draco as a homo/bi-sexual while reading the books. I did not see canon that way. It's a tough job seperating Canon from Fanon, but I think I manage quite well.

Why do I love this pairing? They are what I think how I would want to be in a relationship. Harry and Draco are a Balance. Their personalities are totally different. What one has, one lacks. What one would like, the other makes up for. Even in appearance they are opposites.Where as Draco as described in the books: "White blond hair, cold silver/grey eyes, a rather pale complexion, and a "pointed" face." His appearance as a whole seems light. While Harry: "Messy jet black hair, and bright green eyes that are hidden behind thick black-framed glasses."Draco's persona is more *out*-there, extroverted, where as on the other hand Harry is more subdued and keeps to himself. Harry is also brave, and selfless, while Draco is the exact opposite: a wimp and selfish.

In the canon sense I feel that Draco tries to make up for his and Harry's lack of friendship by getting his attention in other ways. For example always badgering Harry's friends, when he could care less about the "mud-blood" and "weasel", or always badgering Harry at the most opportune times when he feels the spotlight will be put on him and his rival.

In a fanon sense I feel that their personalities match evenly. Where Draco is sarcastic, Harry is naive. When Draco puts up a mask of indifference, Harry's face is an open display of emotions. In the fanon world, Harry and Draco fit beautifully. Their Angst, Fluff, Smut, and even Humor are marvelous testaments to a beautiful pairing. And I couldn't love them any less.

The Community// com·mu·ni·ty - A group of people having common interests.

Never have I seen such an open minded group of people. The authors, artists, webmasters/mistresses, and fans are truly amazing and I admire each and every one of you for supporting your ship. There are so many people that have made me love this ship more than I ever knew I could. The fiction I must mention is Irresistable Poison; by Rhyseen. This fiction combined Angst with the personalites of Canon Draco and Harry. It indured flames and ridicule from newspaper articles, but by the author's resolve and determination it still managed to be completed.

There is also the very successful Harry/Draco Fanlisting: Hush maintained by Leonie that has 1000+ members! Keep those numbers rolling guys.

There are many Harry Potter RPGs. Nocturne Alley being one of the more popular. But many involve Harry and Draco in a relationship. I always imagined Harry and Draco's relationship to be like that of Dracolicious and Boywholive's.

I'm glad to say that I am a part of the H/D community.
