The rain spattered against her mane and coat, but life went on. Tahlia had recently took on a rather anti-social outlook of life, hovering on the sidelines of happenings, but rarely did she speak. Her eyes were not trained on her fellow soquili, but to the sky, and the river, they were trained on the fish and the birds. Taking gentle steps the mare walked along the river, not paying any attention to where she was going, preferring to watching the ducks floating down-stream make the best of this drizzle, popping in and out of the water, ruffling their feathers. If ducks could smile, Tahlia was sure she was seeing this little flock smile now.

She didn't enjoy the rain as much, once she realized it wasn't the usual warm summer rain, but an oddly cold one. Shivering, the tan mare quickly tore her eyes off the birds and marched for cover, a large elm tree who's branches spread out and beckoned her.

Tiffany gave out an unattractive grunt. It was not a noise that she usually made, nor one that she was comfortable making in front of others. But this weather was WORTH that grunt. The colt rain. The humidity. The dirty mud. There was NOTHING about it that was even remotely good.

She slunk through the woods, a scowl on her face. Her graceful head hung low. Her stomach felt funny and unsettled. Must have been the apple she ate earlier. She was starving, and there were only semi-ripe ones available. Her delicate stomach usually only received the perfectly bright red ones. That must be it.

All in all, though, Tiffany was in a pretty horrible mood. Not in a horrible enough mood to forget about her status, though. When she saw a brownish mare in the distance, she brought her head up, renewing her stance to it's full glory. She might be having a particularly dreadful day, but she certainly wouldn't be flaunting it.

Tahlia let out a relaxed sigh, now safe under the tree. This rain would have to let up soon, surely? She wanted to actually get things accomplished while she was young. With a humorless smile, the mare stared out at the gray world. But not all was dreary.

Blinking, Tahlia frowned at the light, horse-shaped patch that was a little too close for comfort. "Hello?" Her voice quavered, it's pitch high after so little talking. She cleared her throat, and called out again, "Hello?" Who was it, she wondered? Maybe her dear sister, though on second glance Tahlia decided it was much too light-coated for that. Hopefully it hadn't heard her call out, then.

She wanted to be detached from the rest of this little community, from relationships and feuds. It just wasn't worth it, in her opinion. And her opinion was the only one that really mattered, right? Of course.

Tiffany flicked her head a little, letting her long curls bounce and settle around her neck. The other's voice rang strong, moving easily through the humidity.
It sounded odd. Scared maybe? She couldn't tell, the tone didn't really sound too scared. Just unsteady.

"Hello there. I heard you the first time" she said, moving closer to the mare. The lines were beginning to sharpen, and the other was under a very large tree. It looked like an excellent place to hide from the rain. Just what she needed. How unfortunate that another had already found it.

"Who are you?" she asked, not straining her voice to yell. Sound moved quite a bit in this kind of weather. She looked down. Mud puddles were already beginning to form. She carefully made sure to only put her her hooves on the driest places. Getting her white fire dingy would be completely tragic.

Tahlia watched the mare warily, standing up a little straighter. Now that she was closer, Tahlia was quite sure it wasn't her sister, nor anyone she knew. It was surprising how the mare wasn't a muddy mess yet, Tahlia herself had mud coating her lower legs. The mare frowned, and hesitated a moment before answering. "I'm Tahlia." She called out again, and blinked. It sounded as if she had shouted the words out.

"And who would you be?" She shook her tail heavily as she said this, sending water flying onto the tree, herself, and the already wet ground. Well, not like she could die from a little wet, right?

Tiffany smiled, now quite near to the tree. She could see the mare in all her details. She looked disgusting and unkept, and totally dirty. Had she no self respect, or was she completely stupid? She watched the mare..Tahlia, apparently, flick her wet tail. Ew.

"Tiffany" she said, scrunching up her face into a grimace. "Why are you so...dirty? Don't you know that it makes you COMPLETELY unattractive?" she asked, joining the mare under the cover of the oak. She looked back at her own tail. It was hugely long and gorgeous, and it had been a pain holding it up so high to keep it from getting dirty. She found a dry spot to relax it a bit.

She craned her neck up, peering at the sky through the branches. It was dark grey in all directions, no sign of it ending anywhere. How dreadful. She shifted, and looked at Tahlia. Hopefully she wouldn't get angry, or else she would have to kick the mare out of the spot.

Tahlia gave an aloof shrug, not at all offended. "I wasn't attractive to begin with, really." She thought for a moment, then added, "And I'm not too keen on impressing anyone, either." She looked at this Tiffany as she joined her under the tree. Mm, whatever. She would be gone soon enough. Now that she did have company, however, she might as well keep talking. Better then appearing like a completely deranged horse. "Why are you so clean, then? Surely you're life would a little more easy," The mare stole a look at that painfully raised tail, "And comfortable?"

With that, she went into silence, staring at her dirt encrusted hooves, waiting for a response.

Tiffany's eyes grew wide. "Well, certainly you weren't. But do you seriously have NO desire to improve yourself? I mean..." she was about to say, 'what would the stallions think?' when she stopped. That was a line she used to hate so much. She refused to use it.

"Do you REALLY want others to look at you and only thing of how disgusting you are? Even the most TRAGIC looking mare isn't that bad if she cleans herself up well!" she said, completely appalled by what this mare's mindset was. Nobody to impress?!?! Of COURSE there was! EVERYONE should be impressed with a mare!

She shook her head, Tahlia simply didn't understand. "I am clean because I CARE. I find it EXTREMELY important what others think of me!" she said, shaking her head.

"None at all." She spoke as briefly as she could between Tiffany's babbling, trying not to simply march off into the rain. Her brows rose slightly, she hadn't missed that unfinished sentence. "Other soquili usually don't look at me, and I don't really care." Tahlia shut up again, letting the mare continue. Quite frankly, this was rather amusing. "Like I said, I don't really care. Even if I did care, no one else would care that I cared. I don't give a s**t about what others think of me, since I'd be unnerved if they were thinking of me anyways." The mare rolled her eyes. "Besides, when I'm dead and rotting in the ground, I'm fairly sure no one will remember me as just a dirty mare. Last I checked, personality counted, too." Her tone was still polite, though there was an edge on it, and she found herself glaring at this perfectly clean mare.

Tiffany rolled her eyes. "Are you THAT ignorant?" she said, shaking her head again. "Of COURSE others care! I have to tell you, when you die, I will remember you as the dirty mare" she said, truthfully. That is how she would remember most soquili she meets. Dirty. Bad hair. Dreadful. All such things.

She looked over the other mare. She certainly had no confidence. She had seen much uglier, and her markings were rather nice. But her personality, her outlook? Horrid. Totally worthless. If she cleaned herself up properly she MIGHT be acceptable!

"Personality counts. But looks leave an impression. Looks are what they remember if they didn't know you. If a soquili walked past right now, they would see two mares, and all they would remember is seeing a beautitful clean, amazing mare, and an ugly, ratty, dirty one. Is that what you want?"

Tahlia frowned. No, she did not want to be remembered as dirty. But she just /knew/ that she was ugly, and the dirty seemed to overpower that fact. Her shoulders sagged, and her head turned towards the ground. "Look. I just don't. CARE." Her voice was starting to become unsteady again. "I know I'm ugly, and I'm horrid, so why should I care? If I care, I'll just be really freaking depressed." Not that she wasn't a little depressed already. "I'm not exactly trying to get anyone's attention, I try to avoid it. Understand, now?"

"Ugly..." The mare muttered, repeating Tiffany's words. "If you're so perfect already, why are you here? Surely you have plenty of stallions to fawn after you and you're lovely little personality and impressions." Tahlia looked up at the leaves protecting them from the rain. "They'll probably find you plenty of shelter, too."

Tiffany smiled, a bit happy to have instilled in this female her exact place, which she seemed to accept. But still...we she really that ignorant? "You are stupid! Thats it! honestly, you aren't really THAT ugly. I mean, nothing compared to me. But as far as raw looks go, you certainly aren't the worst. I've seen plenty parading around their hideousness. If you cleaned yourself up, you would probably pass as fairly pretty" she said, unsure why she was saying such things. It wad true, but not exactly something she said often.

She tilted her head, looking at the mare, Tahlia. "Well, why would I risk getting muddy and dirty out there when I am in perfectly good cover here? LAST time I let a stallion find me somewhere to be in shelter he started trying to..whats the word you lowers use? Hit on? Hit on me!" she said, shaking her head. "And my....friend....who is....a stallion... he, he isn't around here" she said, shaking her head at the thought of it all.

"Mmph." It wasn't really worth it anymore, arguing with this prissy mare. A noncommittal grunt in reply to Tiffany every sentence or so seemed appropriate. "'Lowers'?" Tahlia's head jerked up. "And what would make you better then 'us'?" She was about to say more, maybe leap into a whole grumbling rant, but a glimmer caught her eye. Spinning around she faced a small, weak little rainbow, fading away as she looked. So that meant...? The mare stuck her head out from under her leafy cover. No rain! She turned back towards the other mare. "The rain's stopped, you know." Thank god.

"What, a boyfriend? I'm not that stupid, you know." Thrumming a hoof against the dirt floor, Tahlia waited impatiently for her response, hopefully a farewell. A good riddance. Something like that.

Tiffany blinked. Wasn't it obvious? Couldn't she tell? The perfection was so apparent, how could even an idiot miss it? "Because. Am Gorgeous, perfection. I have a sparkling personality, and everything I do shines with perfection" she said, smiling. yes, that was it. If the mare tried to contradict her, she was certainly stupid.

Tiffany looked at the ground all around. It was muddy. "YOU can go if you like. I'm not leaving. It's too muddy' she said, looking at the ground. "I can't go until the mud begins to dry up" she said, stubbornly. That was another think Tiff hated. Even after the rain was gone, it still left its horror behind.

"B..boyfriend?" she stuttered, taking a step back. "Your...your wrong. He isn't my boyfriend. We...we're just friends" she said, glaring. "Don't be stupid. I don't need a boyfriend. We are just friends. How dare you suggest it..." she said, feeling as if she needed to continue the argument even though the mare hadn't said anything more. "He is NOT my boyfriend!" she said, her voice getting louder, getting defensive.
