The forest had been peaceful... At least, as peaceful as a forest could be when one had a mouthy foal following them about. The colt had gotten a bit better as far as he was concerned. He reminded him, in many ways, of a young filly that his mate had once found and cared for.
He stood outside the small cavern that he called home, starring up at the dark sky and the thousands of stars shimmering above him. It was a beautiful night... Not a cloud in sight. Perfect for contemplation and star gazing. Hopefully the latter would distract him from the former.

Altair hadn't gotten better, Draven had just gotten used to him. He was still mouthy, he was still sarcastic, and he was still arrogant and prideful and thought he was the king of the world in every sense of the word. Oh, and he still liked to argue, too.
However, he'd 'humbly' accepted Draven's invitation to live with him and when he woke up from his nap he stumbled outside to look at the night sky, squinting. "Whatcha lookin' at?" he asked, eyes searching to find what was so interesting about a bunch of stars. He had plenty of stars on him. Wasn't anything special.

He glanced down at the colt for a moment, a slight smile curving his mouth. "The stars." Ask a simple question and recieve a simple answer. He let his gaze drift back up to the sky above him. "Have I told you that all of the stars in the skies have a name? Each and every one of them... Just as things here on earth do."

"No s**t?" he asked, eyebrows raising at that little fact, "That's a lotta names." He couldn't even count that high. Kind of lost count after ten. Then again, that was about as high as he could count anyway and it was lucky that he could reach the number he could.
"I dun' have a name though."

His brow furrowed, ears flickering at the sound of the word that had fallen from the foal's mouth. "You are lucky that Nostalgia isn't around to hear you saying that..." He shook his head slowly before returning to the topic at hand. "You may not have a name... But the stars do and, while you are lacking in the name department, you do have stars of your own. Perhaps one of them has your name."

"Don't care what any mare has to say about me," Altair scoffed, "Ain't afraid of any mare." Women were...Well, they were supposed to be the weaker gender. Or something like that. God knew where he picked it up from - sometimes he just found unsavory sorts of people in his wanderings.
"Oh, really? Well they ain't talkin' to me. Why don't you ask 'em what my name is?"

"Aparantly you have never heard the phrase 'hell hath no fury like a mare scorned'." He snorted softly, giving his head a light toss. He knew well enough that mares could stand on their own... Just as he knew that, even so, it was his duty to protect them.
"Do you intend to spend your entire life asking others to do things for you? Instead of asking me to speak to the stars... Why don't you look up into the sky and find one that speaks to you?"

"I spent all my life doin' everything for myself. The world owes me somethin'." Besides, he was better than most. Arrogance complex, anyone? Not that he knew where that came from either. Maybe it was the fact that he'd been able to survive instead of dying like most foals fresh out of baskets would have without parents.
Rolling his eyes, though, knowing that Draven would argue with him he looked up into the sky again. Try as he might, he couldn't get the damn things to say anything at all and he frowned, "They ain't speakin'."

"As much as we may like to believe it to be so, the world does not owe us anything. We are brought into it and the things that happen do so for a reason, even if that reason is not one that we understand." He turned his head, looking down to the colt. "Some things speak without words... Which star up there in the sky stands out the most when you look at it."

The foal was growing incredibly frustrated. All of the stars looked the same! Legs took him a few paces outward and he turned around to see if any behind him looked particularly special. One seemed a bit brighter than the others, so deciding that he wanted this game to be over, he nodded his head toward the star and wondered how Draven could ever know which one he was looking at.
"That 'un there."

He turned, looking up to the sky in the direction of the foal's gaze. "Are there any other stars around it?" He asked, trying to figure out which one the colt was gazing at. "Before you respond to that with some sort of smart crack... Yes, I know that there are many other stars up there. Sometimes stars form things in groups though. Does this one look like anything to you?"

Draven was getting incredibly too tuned into him if he could guess what he was going to say. Altair was going to have to change it up a bit! "I wasn't gonna make any cracks!" he protested with a small pout. "It's the brightest star over there. All the little 'uns look smaller than it. It's in the center o' a..clus...Urm...." What WAS that word? He'd heard it but the poor foal couldn't remember it.
"Center o' the clucker." That sounded about right.

"Cluster." He nodded slowly before looking up to the sky once more. "That's called a constellation... Sometimes the stars form pictures in the sky as well. We can't always see them but those who walk on two legs do. They call that one Aquila... And that star? The bright one that you see... Its name is Altair."

"Clucker's funnier," he said, trying to salvage his pride. Ah well, the word was tucked away in the alicorn's brain and he listened to the man explain. "Aquila and Altair, eh? Well, I don't like Aquila. Sounds like a girl's name. So I guess I'll be Altair."
Sounded pretty, he supposed. Not exactly manly but he could live with it. Wasn't a common name, by any means.

"Altair it is." He laughed as he looked down to the foal. "... You do realize what this means, don't you? Now you won't have to listen to me call you 'littke one'." He leaned down, giving the colt's shoulder a gentle nudge with the tip of his nose before taking off. It was a good night for a run.
