I saw something similiar to this in the guild somewhere, but it didn't quite answer my questions, and it wasn't exactly this question. But really, I'm curious, what is the purpose of buddhist prayer? What dyu guys think?

I tend to think of it as being an aid in generating aspirations for spiritual goals, and as well as a practice to help develop good attitudes, or to reflect upon the fortune of having a precious human life, perhaps.

Ligier the Green Sun I tend to think of it as being an aid in generating aspirations for spiritual goals, and as well as a practice to help develop good attitudes, or to reflect upon the fortune of having a precious human life, perhaps. I've always thought of it that way as well. Generating aspirition, or something along those general lines.

i have heard that prayer and the rituals practiced by some buddhists in front of statues and "idols" of buddha are actually just rituals of gratitude for the buddha's teaching. nothing at all like asking for salvation or anything... though i think sects of pure land can be taken in that direction, especialy what i know of in the chinese pureland traditions.... i think
definately dont quote me at all in this.
*edit
also, prayer in monotheistic religions portray more of a sense of humility and submission. so perhapse it is a practice to remain mindful of ones humility, which can loosely be linked to the paying of gratitude to buddha himself.

Ah yes! I can't believe I forgot about showing gratitude/appreciation to the triple gem! Also, oh yes, humility is an important part of Buddhist practice. xd
