Princess ambled slowly into 'her' cave, a rather small but cozy thing that she was quite possessive of. Grunting with the added weight due to her pregnancy, she lowered herself onto the earthen floor, eyeing the plain wicker baskets that she'd theived from the shaman's tent. They would keep her foals safe...foals needed their basket, even if it was a crudely made thing from palm fronds or river reeds. These were special...once the foal was in it, they would change, showing hints as to what the foal within would look like.
Princess knew her time was near...she'd been having gentle contractions, barely able to be felt, for the past day or two as the foals were slowly positioned in a proper way for birthing. So she lay upon the earthen floor and waited.

Waya, the proud stallion that he was, found himself pacing in front of the mouth of the cave. His brow was knitted with worry for his love...and his children. He was wearing a path down around the mouth, his hooves having traversed the path many times since she had entered the protective stone walls.
Sucking in a breath he quietly turned his head and looked towards the center of the cave, into the inky blackness. He heard nothing but the gently sigh of her breath from within. Slowly the large dark stallion entered the cave, looking through the dim light for her figure. "Princess?" he called tenativly. "Is...can I get you anything? How are you feeling?" he asked her, though he voice held back the wall of emotion he felt, he wasnt sure if she would snap at him and tell him to leave, but he was worried.

Princess laughed softly to herself, feeling the contractions slowly grow stronger. Once the water broke, things would go quickly, but for now it was a long slow waiting game. "I'm alright...but could you come in? I'll...need your help, I think." Her ears flicked back as she admitted this, but if there were more than one she'd be too busy with the next to make sure the first was securely nestled within its basket, clean and dry. She shifted into a more comfortable position as she lay, relishing the little pain-free time before the hard labor that she knew was to come.

Waya entered the cave with more vigor as he was permitted enterance. He could see her vauge outline in the dim lightly before him now and he stopped to lay down beside her, nuzzling her softly with his black velvet muzzle. "how can I help?" he asked her, eyeing her softly as she breathed quietly in the dark. She seemed like she wasnt in any pain yet, and that was good, however the task of possably having to fetch a two legger should things go wrong weighed heavily on his mind.
He had watched Princess grow heavy with child, and her stomach was much larger than just one foal... and she had prepaired three baskets just in case, stealing them like a tricky fox. He was nervous for her, and the well being of their children.

Princess looked up at her shadowy mate, love and pride shining in her amber eyes. "Could you...make sure each is clean, and perhaps in their basket? I'm not sure how much time I'll have between...if there's more than one." She took a breath as though she were about to say more, but all conversation was cut short as she grunted with slight pain, and water gushed across the cave floor.

Waya nodded softly and nuzzled her gently, his blue eyes closeing and just listening to the sound of her breathing. His eyes snapped open as he felt the stillness of the air and a slight grunt that issued from his mate, followed by the sound of liquid on the cave floor and the heavty sent of the birthing in the air. "I will my love...They will be safe.." he nodded to her and stood, the proud stallion was ready to usher his children into the world, and keep his family safe, no matter the cost.

Halloween layed down outside of the cave, her back to the entrance. She didn't know why she was here. She felt less like part of the herd than a stranger wandering through. She was rarely ever around and she rarely ever saw any of the other members. She didn't even know any of them very well. She was like a traveler spending only a night in a warm family. But she was here... for some reason... she was here.

Helaku edged over to Halloween, also feeling rather out of place. However, instead of seeing the herd as a tight group, he saw it more like...a net. The knots might be scattered or spaced apart, but they all needed each other, and could rely on each other. Each contributed to the strength of a whole, even if they didn't follow each other's every move. It worked quite nicely with his tendency to stay by himself or with Olathe, knowing that he had allies to call on. "Hey," he spoke softly to Halloween. "You know we're here if you need us, right?"

Princess whinnied, voice shrill with pain, and nearly leapt through her feet as another contraction came. Dear gods, but if this was what her mother had gone through no wonder she'd been so convinced she had the right to choose life or death for her daughter...it f*cking hurt! Legs thrashed slightly as she groaned, fighting to push past the hurdle of getting the foal's shoulders out. With another grunting push, she slumped onto her side as the foal finally slipped free, breathing heavily as she gathered her strength for the next. She could still feel movement...she wasn't done yet.

The ebony stallion watched the mare on the floor of the cave, his brow knitted with worry as she labored on the floor. He had never witnessed birthing before, but to hear the mares speak of it...he knew it had to be painful. To see his strong love reduced to whimpering on the floor..he knew it was the most painful thing a mare could ever do, but they did it. They all did it, for the sake of love.
Hurrying beside princess he watched as the small wriggling foal was the first to come out. In the dim lighting he couldnt tell if it was a filly or a colt, but he did as princess asked him. He cleaned the foal of the birthing sac and nestled it down safely in its basket. Yet princess was still on the floor when he was done, and by her panting and breathing he knew she wasnt done yet, there was another foal to come. "The first is safe." he said reassuringly to her.

Princess acknowledged him with a soft nicker, breath coming in pants as she started to labor to bring forth the next. It was both harder and easier. She knew what to do, but her muscles were still weary and sore from the first foal. But she managed, fixing in her mind the fact that this was temporary, she would be done soon, she would be alright. With a shrill whinny and a pained toss of her head, she pushed forth the second foal.

Waya watched his love with an experession that was mixed elation and worry. He was witnessing the birth of his children, the beautiful union of their souls, but she was in so much pain... and struggling it seemed to bring them forth.
He dutifully washed the foal as he fell to the ground beside princess at the bace of his charcoal hooves and slipped it into a basket beside the first. Muffled bleeting and scooting sounds told him they where both fine and healthy. "Both are safe..." he said, bending his long neck to press his muzzle against her cheek. He wounded if she was done, or if there where more foals in side.

Bringing forth the last foal was one of the hardest things Princess had ever done, a feat to rival her long journey from the deserts of her homeland to this lush, green land. She knew what to do, but she was so tired... Her wearied muscles screamed with pain as she strained, nostrils flaring as she took in deep gulps of breath. Her face scrunched up from the effort, she slowly brought the last foal into the world, breathing heavily. She laid her head on the ground and closed her eyes, hoping dearly that she was done. She'd never seen or heard of a mare having more than three foals, although she knew the whispered rumors of elders with increased fertility.

Waya watched his weary love, he could tell by how long she strained with the last foal that she was tired, and rightly so. He nudged the foal with his nose and washed it clean as it slowly slipped from her and onto the cool ground of the cave. He placed the little one into a basket and listened to the sounds from all three of the baskets.. they where parents.
He moved to her side and laid down in front of her, pressing his muzzle to her brown, feeling the sweat of her efforts on his chocolate coat. "They are all fine... three beautiful foals."

Panting softly, it seemed all the bay mare could do to open her eyes and lift her head to look at her mate with loving eyes, returning the nuzzle wearily. "Thank you..." she whispered, laying her head across Waya's strong back and closing her eyes again, starting to drift already into an exhausted sleep. Morning would be soon enough to take up the reins of her responsibility.
