If you have an animal based work environment, state your job and the pros/cons about it!!

optional read:
I am a grade 10 high school student. I was thinking about careers for my future. I want to spend my life doing something I enjoy. I love being out in the wild, and I love ANIMALS! I need Ideas... Any suggestions out there for future careers I should think about? Also if you suggest a job for me can you also suggest courses I must take in order to pursue it.

Well I think you would probally need biology for just about anything.. if you got into conservation, geography would be a good course to look into.
My friend is going into vet assistent, and most of what she is doing is co-op.

if you live in canada (I think it works if you live in the U.S too, though im not sure) a good website to check out is careercruising.com, they'll give you a list of jobs, and they courses you'll need for them.

anyway, hopfully that helps you alittle.

Find a university with a good basic biology program. Start off there, and the more you learn about the various feilds of research choose the one you gravitate most towards. Thing on your strengths. Are you an intelligent academic who enjoys reading and the persuit of scientific knowledge? Are you someone who prefers to be out there in the wild working directly with the animals? Do you have interests in both?

I like scientific research and I'm very into understanding the world. Since I don't think that there's a life after death, I want to study and produce something to the entomological community that will be my immortality in a way--something that will help people and insects even when I'm gone. That's just an example.

Think about your convictions, ethics, ideals, interests, strengths, weaknesses, and all of the elements that would affect a future career. Don't focus on money--find something you'll love and if you're good at it you'll eventually make money at it.

Well, you could be a WIldlife Acivist. Or a Marine biologist or a vet or a worker at a adoption center. It all depends on what kind of animal do you like the most really. Then I can help ya out. ^^

Thanks Auf and Melody 3nodding

I love all animals! It's just that I live in an area with so much natural beauty and I just couldn't get a job without being outside. When I move out I want my own dog and I don't want to leave my dog at home all day while I'm at work. So something that would allow me to take my dog and be outside? I'm not interested in making large amounts of money. Just enough so I can feed me and my animals.

I don't know what I want to do as far as a career goes yet... so for now I work at Petsmart in animal care (gotta be 16 to work at Petsmart, 18 to work at Petco). It gets me enough money to feed my pets and I get to work with animals all day. Plus I get a 15% discount on all my animal supplies so that's a bonus.

In my spare time I take photos of my pets. In fact that's what I'm doing right now. My rattie Mikiboo is taking over my desk. (See?)

I'm thinking maybe I could turn my hobby into something more profitable, but I don't know if I'm good enough. But, it's something you could consider. If you're good at art of any type (photo, drawing, etc) you could mix your love of animals and your art together and make a side profit off of it. For example, I would definitely buy a character drawing of me and my doggie when we're walking through the park (the kind you get at Disneyland). Just make sure if you set up a stand of any type that it's legal where you live.

I want to be involved in the zoo.

Yeah, that'd be an awesome job. I know the cons of it (cleaning up all those droppings, for one) and I can see why people would hate it, but I still reckon that'd be awesome. I guess it's the whole idea of working with animals - in a way for animals - and knowing that they depend on you. And you know that you're helping, whatever that may be. Can't top that feeling.

I couldn't think of any job that I'd like more.

Becoming a zoo keeper takes 4+ years of college and you're not guaranteed a job. Let's say you and 2,000 other people apply (yes, that is the competition for every job opening) and you get the job. Great, right? Well even then you don't actually get to interact with the animals. Your job is to make sure they're healthy, happy, entertained, clean and well fed. The best way to go about getting that job is to work in a gift shop so you get first dibs on every job opening. Most places like to hire from within the company.

There are some smaller zoos that I know of that have animal interaction, but they pay even less and are sometimes volunteer run... Besides being a vet there are very few decently paid animal related jobs. You just have to open your mind and think outside the box. Zoo keeper, vet, vet assistant, documentary host, field animal researcher, horse stable helper, farm help, kennel, dog trainer, pet stores, dog walker, groomer, photographer, so on, so on.

Just think "What can I do that allows me to work with animals?" Usually the first thing people say is "Vet". But there's so many opportunities out there to work with animals. Start researching and you'll find what'll work for you.

If you decide you want to help out now and get some experience start volunteering at a local animal shelter or wild animal rehab center. Usually they require you be 16 or 18, but sometimes they make exceptions. Or you could volunteer at a animal/breed specific shelter that isn't state run.

I wouldn't expect to be physically interacting with any of the creatures there anyway. It's just cool to be near them. Sounds weird I know, but I'm happy if I get to watch animals, let alone get near them. I'd be surprised if I ever got the chance to work at a zoo. I don't think it's what I'd end up doing either, but I'd happily do the four years of college just for - as you said - a chance at it.

Thanks! Glad I could inspire you ^_^.

My absolute dream job would be to work to preserve the wild population of macaws. I just think they're so much happier in the wild... you never hear of wild macaws having feather plucking/self mutilation problems or depression. There's no need to capture wild macaws anymore... you can captive breed them. In fact they make better pets if you captive breed them...

I have more reasons but my brain shut off earlier so I'll use picture examples.

That's what I was trying to tell my friend. She was like what the hells a Macaw... I watched a program about the rampant trade for exotic animals. It was so depressing; people capture them and sell them for like 400 its sick! My dad's girl friend is from Cali (she's a teacher) one of her Mexican students was like I can get you a Macaw for Christmas. The kids are catching them too! I think they are such amazing birds! I love watching them fly, blue to red blue to red. Oh I have to go to school! I'll talk more when I get back..

My granny has blue and gold macaws. She got them from a pet store back in the 70's for around $800 USD. One of them was wild caught and one was captive bred. She got them in the hopes of having a flock of macaws on her farm in Georgia but things didn't work out. Anyways... they had over 50 babies in the 20 some odd years they were breeding. She's retired them for the time being but when she retires and moves in with us I plan to help her breed her birdies again.
That alone is proof enough that you do NOT need to catch wild macaws! And if you're not willing to spend the $1600+ dollars on a bird that lives 60 - 80 years, you do not need a macaw. Period.

I'm definitely not against keeping pet parrots. I have a sun conure myself and he is the love of my life. Neither of his parents were wild caught, and I was extremely picky about the breeder. I went though a few breeders before I met Kat (kats baby birds) and I'm glad I did. Calypso is everything to me and I don't know what I'd do without him.

But having Calypso has helped me realize that parrots are so much more than people portray them as. So many people think they're agressive, noisy, messy creatures that look good as an accessory in your living room. Budgies and lovebirds are the most common "accessory parrot" that I know of. But they're so much more... I had a friend who kept a Lovebird in a small finch cage on the porch. He never had any paper or wood toys to shred "because he rips them apart in just a couple of days and I think it's pointless to spend a bunch of money on it"... I asked him once what kind of bird he is and my friend said "a small hookbill. Look, he looks just like this bird on the bag of food. It's 'small hookbill' food." When I told him that his bird is a lovebird he denied it and kept saying "but he looks like the bird on the bag". I thought he was one in a million and people are more educated..... but then I started working at a pet store. You'd be surprised how many people are just like this friend of mine... It's depressing!

If I can educate the world on keeping exotic pets AND help them realize poaching is still a major issue in the exotic pet trade... I will be a very happy person ^_^.

mrgreen I respect your passion and dedication to these birds. I think it's great that you try and educate others. blaugh Calypso is so pretty! I have never had a pet bird, I prefer to see them in the wild, FREE. Birds have the Amazing ability to fly, I feel happiest when they are in the sky doing so. I cried once when I was little, I was jealous that I couldn’t fly way above the tree tops. I don't think it's bad at all that you have them. But I just love to see birds in the wild. It always puts me in a good mood. Oh and their songs that’s another favorite thing! I don’t think nature would be as wonderful without a bird theme song xp
