Exactly what the thread title says. This is good because my dad's happy but bad because I didn't really want to do med. I suppose it pays well, though, so it's alright, and there will be plenty of time for me to go to Oxford, get a PhD in English Lit. and become a lecturer after I get my MBBS.

Discuss: my entry into medical school, the merits and demerits of being a doctor and what you do/are planning to do at university/after school.

I'm still looking into grad schools.

I've got offers to do quantum mechanics.

Congrats, Jay! Good jorb!

After my grad year I'll have a Masters degree in Occupational Therapy, so there's a chance I might be working in a hospital too, depending on which patient population I decide to work with.

That is a thing of beauty. ^.^

And thank you, everyone, for the congratulations!

Blossom: How long until you get your degree? Also, Occupational Therapy sounds interesting.

jeoc: I didn't realise you were younger than me! If it makes you feel any less creeped out, though, my dad started university when he was fifteen, and he didn't have any problems. (But Quantum Mechanics? That sounds pretty heavy-duty. The only quantum-anything I've done was a tiny little bit in physics, and even then, the teacher just kind of mentioned it in passing.)

It is. Probability of individual quarks, bosons, fermions and other truely tiny particles doing certan things. I rewrote the fundamental equation for the forces on a sub-quark level and got results a full 6.3% closer to observed than the previous best model. Just a bit more and we hit the Heisenburg Point and all further modeling becomes mere guess work until we can make a much better microscope!
*fantasizes about a 1/100000000 picometer microscope*

Why the hell did I stop studying more interesting things to study something less interesting that I enjoy?

I understood the words "quark" and possibly "fermion" there. ^.^ But I think I get the general gist of the rest of it. Also, the microscope you mentioned would be completely awesome. Are they even close to developing one that accurate? (Pico- is x10^ -what? I've forgotten, which means that I've probably only used it once or twice. I remember most of the others.)

pico is 10^-12. And unfortunately, there is no one even close to getting a scope that good. My equations need more precise data to use in their enteriety so as the data gets better, I can post more precise theorums and equations to match.

So, in theory, how would one go about creating such a microscope. Is there technology that could possibly be used in the future to do such a thing?

The technology is currently entirely theoretical and will require the next generation of nano-technology before even prototyping can begin. That said, the principal is simple. You use a particle smaller than an electron to scan with as the best current microscopes are electron microscopes.

We did a bit on nanotechnology in Chemistry once. Isn't there some problem about prohibitively high research and development costs? But once that obstacle's been cleared...I don't know much about microscope technology and such, but I do know a bit about computer hardware, and the gains in speed and processing power that we could potentially see with the large-scale introduction of such technology would make current computer hardware pretty much obsolete. But if I read your comment correctly, that'd be nothing more than a small step towards the microscope you're fantasising about...

I was fantasizing about a microscope that is impossible according to the laws of physics as we know them. It would take a stable particle several orders of magnitude smaller than the smallest theoretical particle to get that microscope. If the government would allow nanotech to be tested on public tasks for the same pay for the whole crew involved plus the overhead, the price tag is a good deal smaller. (a street that has nanobots to convay litter to a designated pickup zone or just eat it anyone?)
