Mirror, Mirror on the Wall
Which will be the first to fall?
Of all the ‘keys’ that we’ve attained
The ‘D’ we’ve won
The ‘D’ we’ve shunned.
And what shape left for the one we gained?

First Authority and still around
Survive the strong, law of fist,
Eat the dead, you get the gist
When we still lived beneath the ground.
Today hid from them that is stronger
For fear of death from the war monger
No hold stronger for those fear bound.

The child sits tall on Golden shrine
Those under him are left to work.
And death for those who shirk
“All things you see are solely mine”
Food for the table,
Cloth made of sable,
Labor pays for the finest wine.
All ruled by one
Held under a thumb.
Found on blade is balance fine.

A tight closed fist, the colour red
A dream, made undone,
The idea we now shun
And the Promise of Utiopia Dead.
Corruption and lies
Behind Ulyanov's eyes
Ignorant of the mothers' tears shed.
Toppling Crowns,
Wearing fine Gowns
And never quite using their head
Nevertheless
They've made quite a mess
And we only misquote what they said.

A solution to our lack of content.
Or so we thought
And so we fought
And all that was quid pro quo: asunder rent
Now away we turn
Eyes from what can burn
From those ignorant of what we meant
When we told them "it's good,
And as soon as we've stood
The test of Time's final ascent
We'll help you reach
Our fabled beach
And you too can enjoy to our extent."
But woe be to them
Thinks this is a stem
Of a tree that will always consent.
For all of the ways
I've mentioned today
Exist in this to some extent.

And so to the Mirror we turn our faces,
And behind the mirror our answer lies.
The mirror is time, and it DOES come in cycles
And so which is next in line to arise?

not me, but anyway, I liekd this a lot. A whole lot.

I don't really know in a word what this is about, but it feels like the loss of compassion adn truth, and people losing sight pf what's important...and all we need is to look into a mirror and see what's going on.

Maaaaaaaaaaaybe. :/

You're right... but this poem is a heck of a lot more specific than that once you see through it. I can't wait for someone to get it! If no one gets it by Monday I'll spill the beans though. Read it out loud though... ignore the spelling in places. That's a couple of hints for you.

**Edit** I just spent 45 mins with a friend... he finally figured it out... but I was helping.

***Second Edit*** If you talk about it in here I'll help... won't give answers, but I'll do the hot cold thing.... Hot biggrin Cold rolleyes

I've no idea, I get the image of a mountain... let me look up some of the things you said to see if I can put it together.

EDIT: Is it by chance about the Pervomartovtsi?

::EDIT:: (again) Vladimir Ulyanov? Lenin, and Russia -> Communism and World War I?

lol and rolleyes

If I tell you what part of this was right and which part was wrong it'll give away the whole thing... but you are thinking in the right direction.

It's either Lenin's rule, and his career, or the death of his brother when they failed to assassinate Alexander III (I think that was the guy at the time anyways).

Hmm... I CAN say that this poem encompasses more of a timeline than just that era. That gives nothing away... and let's you know that although you are on the right track, you're also being to focused on one thing.

It seems to start with the rise of the Communist/Socialists and the Bolshevics party. The D we've shunned I think means Democracy. The second stanza seems to be referring to how they pulled themselves out of the first World War.

The third stanza seems to be the Dictatorship they've won (back from the first stanza) and his all ruling power. It's also about how communism forces everyone to work equally, and the consequences of those who do not.

Lenin used the red guards to shut out any opposition. "A tight closed fist, the colour red." Red could also stand for Communism. This could refer to the secret police, the civil war, or any of the other problems facing Russia at that time. Or the Red Terror.

This fifth stanza is about the civil war, and the White army vs The Red army.

Finally it's asking what could come next, that was worse than this...?

That's what I think anyways.

Yeh know... when I started this, I was attempting to write a subliminal thing for the contest. And now that it's finished people are coming from ALL over the field with other possible meanings! Democracy is one of the D's... but not the one you mentioned. Although as I said... you could make it that one... but then it throws out of whack the 'key's reference...

Wait... no... it doesn't

I'm sorry in advance for who this might offend...

Holy s**t!!! I wrote a DAMN good poem here... it's doing what I MEANT for it to do (a riddle ish thing) AND getting other answers too!!!

*ish suddenly very proud of herself*
