For when your head hurts and you're looking for a place for common conversation. <3

-will surely be kicked from guild, but is willing to take that risk-

Since I'm fairly sure I'm the only person so far under the age of 18 and/or not in university, I'm just a tad curious as to what some of you are studying and why you're interested in it. xp

Ah ... while not exactly UNintelligent .... yet your question is compelling .... I am studying Graphic Design as a foundation for filmmaking. Non-traditional, but it makes sense to me. I want to produce films that contribute good to our society, that help people become a little more motivated to be open-minded, to be kinder .... I figure that finding out how color, and sound, and shape move people is a sound platform for film.

BUT, I have a burning desire to learn all the time, so if I could get paid to be a professional student??? I would so be there ..... xd

To answer your question: I'm studying history and political science (thinking about minoring in astronomy) in an attempt to get into lawschool and become a D.A. Failing that, I've always wanted to teach history (especially seeing the state of the history curriculem in the US.)

I don't have any real idea why I love politics and history as much as I do, but my love of debating, and an early exposure to multiple mythologies probably didn't hurt too much.

My chosen professions are expresssions of my desire to help humanity in my own little way, either by helping to keep the criminal element off the streets, or by teaching my (possible) students to appreciate the world as it was.

Although I'm strongly interested in character driven art it isn't really a money maker.

Luckily I love the biological sciences and especially genetics intrigues me.

So I went into Biology/Biotechnology, got my Associates and transferred into my current school. I changed majors here to Bioinformatics, which adds computer science, networking, databases, data analysis, and statistics into the mix.

The way life works and ticks is a passion for me, and I'm sure that a lot of medical and agricultural boons can be generated for the human race by my actions, eventually.

I will NOT work on biological weapons, except to study them for defense purposes. It is strongly against my morals to use a biological weapon (like a retrovirus or a weaponized disease) on a group of people. Something like that horrifies me.

Um, I'm studying English Education. Integrated Language Arts to be exact. I hate it, not for the English or the Education, but I am so not eager about taking the Praxis II within a year. I'm smart enough, it is just an expensive test and extremely difficult. >_>

I'm in it, well..., it is my third area of study. I waas initially in Visual Communication. I switched out of it because it bored me. I would have struggled simply out of refusal to do the required things. After that, I did art. I love art. I still do, but my teacher destroyed any passion I had for it. I had the worst drawing teacer on campus, made the class drag out. It was a 3 hour class...and you can imagine that hating something like that for a semester was a bear. He was just a nasty b*****d, and I didn't want to deal with anymore teachers like that.

Among these I was taking several literature classes, typical english classes, and creative writing courses, and I grew to love them. I didn't know what I wanted to do with an English major, looked into the Education program, liked it, and here I am.

I'm 21, studying chemistry [1], and employed [2] as a trainee chemistry technician, which means the university pays for me to study [3] and gives me a day each week off to study [4].

I'm also finding myself very interested in it, despite not pursuing it past GCSE level at school.

[1] Due to [2]
[2] By accident.
[3] Albeit with the Open University, rather than with the one at which I work
[4] Yeah, right [5].
[5] Well, I study once I wake up... but I mostly study on the weekends.

I'm also 21, studying in no particular field. (I am seeking an BA in General Studies) but the classes I tend to prefer are Philosophy, History, Sociology, Criminology (if that's a word), and Visual Arts.

Also I've changed the min-age requirement to 16. A question for you all, should I eliminate any requirements what so ever?

I'm rather hungry for feedback on how I’m setting everything up. I've only ran Fandom Guilds in the past, where mass members were the key to real success.

I believe this Guild could prosper with relatively few members, but each of a higher caliber; which isn't meant to compare anyone to another, or rate their abilities above each other. But I would like to avoid members who would respond to comments in immature and unsought out fashions. So that being a member has 'meaning' besides you simply click 'join' and you’re in. Do you see my point or is it authoritarian for me to restrict membership at all? – I tend to over think, and end up putting my foot in my mouth. ^_^

You may also note that I myself am not the most intelligent and articulated of people, being that I certainly didn't enjoy learning, reading, thinking, and all that until these last few years in College. So I'm catching up. I'm absolutely loving going to class for the simple sake of learning, though most say It is just me putting off going and getting a real job =P (I work as a computer repair specialist, eBay sales consultant, and teach private computer lessons. Great job, small buisness, so low pay.)

Another Thought. I am seeking out the most productive means of naming the sub forums above. I went with the classical separation of the disciplines, but things such as History have been known to be in the Social Sciences or Humanities. Would It be better off to separate them with general titles such as “History & Philosophy” “Natural Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Physics.” Well I suppose that’s a bad place to start. More, what is the focus of this guild? What subjects relate the most to each other and what subjects will belong in the main area. (For the time being, everything. But in the future, I’d like category specific subjects to be in the above areas)

I better be quiet, before I choke on my own foot.

You could go with "Science", "Non-Science", and "Arguments Over Which Topics Are Science", but the arrangement you currently have isn't too bad. An overly large number of subforums could reduce discussion, which might be something to take note of.

Yes, five is more than I'd actually wish. That is why I restricted posting to the main area. However I run a guild with 3,600, so sometimes I do forget about the subforum problem of splitting up members.

MistressPaco

In a word, no. (assuming) You've set up this guild to foster intelligent discussion across the spectrum, restricting access to those who have show themselves to be knowlegible in X field is perfectly reasonable.

:first part handled by chrisoya:
Perhaps we can institute an invitation policy. Something along the lines of X reccomends Y and Z other people must 'second' this reccomendation before an invite is sent.

Er...to foster debate across the fields of science, philosophy, history, the arts, etc? That'd be my guess... sweatdrop

Yay, another youngin'!
Daha.

But yeah, most of you here seem to have good goals, I completely respect the direction each of you wants to head in. Seems pretty interesting overall!
3nodding

Myself, I think I want to head into general Sciences then specialize in Psychology, hopefully do some pre-med after that and go to med school, get my doctorate, and become a psychiatrist. Only problem, I'd be going into 1st year university at 16. Which would suck. A lot. Hahahah.

In relation to the kind Mistress' post, I'm strongly against setting an age requirement. Seeing as I'd get kicked. sad But yeah, I think the recommendation idea as well as the "level of knowledgability (sp?)" both seem like pretty good guidelines.

Any hint of an age-requirement has been stricken from existance and replaced with a more indepth Membership Request Informational for potential members to fill out.

I am majoring in Video Game Art and Design at the Art Institute of L.A. Video games have always been my passion, since around the age of 3, and during the playstation days I became amazed as to how much work goes into a game. And to have such high quality works of art presented in these games only enhanced my desire to be a Video Game artist. 3nodding
