I haven't drawn any new Buddhist art for a while but lo and behold I finally drew the legendary Ji Gong!
For the bodhi-newbies:
Quote:
Ji Gong (or Daoji) was a legendary Chinese Buddhist monk from the Song Dynasty. He was a very eccentric fellow who wore ragged robes and played pranks on his fellow monks. He ate meat and drank wine although Buddhist clerical rules forbid such habits. Here's a poem that justified his vices:
"Some people cultivate their minds but some people cultivate their mouths. Others cultivate their mouths but not their minds; for me, I cultivate my mind but not my mouth."
Despite his repeated violations of the clerical rules, he was a good-natured man who often helped ordinary people, healed the sick, slayed monsters, exorcised evil spirits and punished bad guys by using magical powers. Here's a song about him:
"I roam the world by land and by water. I mingle with the common people, do good and punish the evil. Ghosts and monsters have no place to hide."
Ji Gong, in my own opinion, is one of the most kick-a** figures in Buddhism hence my own artistic rendition of this colorful character.
Note: The Chinese character on his hat is "Fo" or "Buddha."
