Well I've always heard that Parsons was a good school to go to for fashion...and I believe that there are a few fashion institutes...go to npda.org a lot of art schools have fashion design as a major so you might want to check them out. ^^

FIT in Manhatten. Fashion Institute of Technology. I want to go there, but my parents don't want me to. It's very expensive.

FIDM - The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. =)

One in SF, one in New York, and I think there is at least one more in the US, but I am unsure. I believe their website is www.fidm.com =)

Firstly, it's good to have an idea of where you'd like to be/ what type of school you wish to go to. There are schools which offer fashion majors/ courses all over the world. There are small schools and larger universities that offer Fashion Design as a study. If you're looking to stay in NY there are several options such as:
Parsons, very expensive but the Harvard of Fashion
FIT, expensive as well but more experimental/fun stuff come out. the Yale
some state uni's offer Fashion, look them up.
There is also the option of getting an internship/ going to a small place to learn firsthand what you'll learn (and won't learn) in a school

Outside of NY there are boundless opportunities:
I don't believe the AI in Boston offer Fashion but the San Fran one does.
I have had bad personal experiences with AI though, as a friend went there and I believe she lost information instead of gained any. It seemed more of a "make this make this don't need to learn just make this" school

Mass. College of Art is a great school and is also rather inexpensive.
I am so impressed by the education that my girlfriend/friends are receiving there I am applying myself so I can take their courses.

Outside the U.s. there's Central St, Martin in England- best school imo
Bunka School in japan
Countless others you can search for, since you said you weren't considering outside u.s. i won't list them.

So really, you just need to choose:location, size, what you really want.
Fashion Design is wayyyy different then it appears on television. Most people study Fashion Merchandising and become "stylists." Design is more work, but it's more about the love of the work than the fame.
