Name: Dusk Owl
Personality: Avuncular is the best word to describe Dusk Owl: while not pushy about it, he likes to think every wolf in the pack is his niece or nephew. He’s got a hip that likes to act up when he’s too energetic, but that doesn’t stop him from playing with pups or strolling and conversing with others in the night—or at least, he tries to hide how much it bothers him the day after; nothing the right bunch of herbs doesn’t fix. His earnest manner makes him trustworthy for secretkeeping, especially for the little ones he dotes over. Who knows how many stories he’s heard over the years.
Regardless of his greying muzzle, Dusk Owl’s intellect remains sharp, and he’s one to carefully reason through every option before deciding. His patience is well known, though in latter years some might call him slow on the draw, and he’s used to advising others beyond the alpha. Since The Great Waste, however, Dusk Owl has gained a streak of guilt and melancholy. In his quiet moments, he tends to reflect too much on the past and what could have been done; the future scares him, though that’s not something he could ever admit aloud. To avoid disaster ever coming again, he works his hardest and is constantly eyeing new opportunities to see his fellow pack members grow into wonderful role models. He feels his time has passed, and now it’s his job to make sure the new generation is ready to take up the mantle.
How did he become the pack's Elder?: Dusk Owl was once the equivalent of Dr. Dreamy among the healers. He had a way about him that eased even the most irascible patients, and indeed seemed particularly adept at handling older wolves and their quirky ways. Nothing seemed to give him flack, and he was always happy to help a fellow caretaker when problems arose. Dusk Owl didn’t see himself as a leader, but he had the qualities of one. It was by his displays of mentoring and applicable experience that he was invited to join the other elders, though being younger than the average one made him self-conscious and eager to prove it wasn’t a mistake.
His predilection and skill at healing may have had to do with the fact that his mother and father were pretty old themselves when they had his litter, and so from the very beginning Dusk Owl had grown up as a caretaker to them even before being officially given the rank. His father in particular suffered from a brittle hip bone issue that made it hard to move, and he was bitter that he could no longer contribute to Swiftfell’s well-being and often took it out on his son when he was visited for medicinal administrating. Not that Dusk Owl minded. He was patient and understanding of the fact that pain could transform even the sweetest of creatures into something worse than they were. And chronic pain could do twisted things on top of that. His focus prior to the disaster had been to find the right herbal remedy that worked best on aching bones that didn’t necessarily numb, wanting to find the right balance between natural healing and quality of life additions.
When he wasn’t on the job, Dusk Owl loved to do a jog around the territory: half to keep in shape for The Great Hunt and The Hare Rush, half for the way moving cleared his head. At about 4 years old, however, he noticed that his hips were beginning to creak more than they usually did and feared that his father’s curse would be his own. There wasn’t much he could do for it, however, other than to keep quiet and not push himself so much.
There wasn’t much of a choice, however, when The Great Waste hit. Constantly on his paws working with other caretakers, Dusk Owl pushed aside his own health to ensure the plague didn’t spread, and he especially threw himself into the work to keep his fellow elders alive. But in spite of his efforts, failure after failure wrecked him with guilt. His parents, who had passed of natural causes before everything fell to pieces, would be so ashamed of him. He frankly believes Thrush kept him an elder because he was the only one of the old guard left, rather than for his knowledge and proven skills.
These days, Dusk Owl plays uncle to the caretakers under his paws, but he’s quiet and a little withdrawn. Well, unless there are puppies about, which always seem to put a little pep in his step. The pelt he wears is a part of a bearskin his mother had taken down once in defense of her friends, a keepsake that keeps him warm (bitter winters really sap his strength) as well as reminds him of his late parent.
His hip problems only worsened with The Great Disaster, though it’s not so bad that he can’t contribute; after all, he’s had experience with remedies for that sort of stuff. Dusk Owl tries not to look so pitiful in front of others nonetheless. Shame about the Great Hunts, though...
(OOC: I list 4 years based on a normal wolf’s 6-8 year life span, but if that’s not right for dire wolves, consider Dusk Owl currently in his 60s-70s equivalent!)

Name: Crowned Maple Eyes
Rank: Hunter
Personality: A rooted soul that knows where her paws will lead her in life, Maple is a strong wolf that only finds joy in providing for her pack. While still a pup, she was curious and playful. However, after she survived the Great Waste, she became harder and determined. Once set on a task, she will work until her muscles are weary and the task is complete. Hunting has been the one thing that brings back a little part of her spirit. Maple enjoys the thrill of stalking her prey and bringing it down with her packmates and returning with their victorious prize to provide for their pack.
How has the Great Waste impacted her?: Maple was just starting to fall in to that awkward stage of leaving puphood and becoming an adult. Still, she was a youth when the strange illness began to infect the pack. Her own parents and sibling succumbed to it. The complete feeling of helplessness Maple felt, watching her family and packmates fall ill and die broke something inside her. She trained to become a skilled and strong hunter, letting that helpless feeling fuel her determination. She could never quite make it to the rank of Protector, not having it in her to take the life of another wolf. But finding food to present to her pack and knowing that it would help them survive became her only drive.

Entrant: Nymphiea
Name: Blooming in Feathers
Rank: Hunter
Personality: Bloom struggles with feelings. It's not like she can't feel; in fact, she has a lot of emotions she bottles up. The issue is being vulnerable. Losing her entire family as a pup and watching her pack disintegrate was traumatic. She handled it the only way she could -- shutting down and pushing back against any attempt to get close.
After all, it'll hurt less if something happens.
She hides behind a tough exterior. Bitter words and venom drips from her tongue with every attempt to converse. It hurts, though. Deeply. She hates the things she says and struggles coming to term with her decisions. She wants to stop, but she's stuck. She's scared off too many wolves and doesn't know how to stop. A part of her wishes someone would keep pushing at her, but she knows that's toxic behavior. It's her job to work through her behavior, but she doesn't know how.
So instead she focuses on something to distract herself; hunting. She loves it. She loves knowing she helps the pack and gives back despite how cutting her tongue can be. She may be hated (in her eyes), but she can at least provide. As a result, she's often hunting. She's incredibly good at it, too!
There's a lot of baggage with Bloom, and she's trying to pack it as deep as she can. She's a good hunter and provider for the pack, but she's cold and venomous. She's stuck in a cycle she can't break yet due to some unaddressed trauma. Maybe one day she'll finally blossom into the wolf she truly wants to be.

How has the Great Waste impacted her?: It shut her down. She lost all resemblance of normality during that time. She was just a puppy and watched her mother rot away. Her father soon followed, and so did her two brothers and plenty of friends she made. Bloom was, in fact, a friendly and curious pup before the Great Waste happened.
After, though, it seemed she had been infected by the trauma. She quickly began avoiding the others and releasing her fear and anger on them. It felt good at first, but it rapidly didn't. Besides, it wasn't her pack she was mad at. She was mad she lost her family. Mad her pack withered. Mad she was unable to do anything. This manifested into a desire to stay alone and never experience that pain again. Instead, she focused on hunting.
It's easier that way.

Name: Wingless
Personality: Determined and passionate, Wingless has always strove to great heights. He loves the pack around him and feels their pain deeply. As a puppy he was always at the heels of his mother, eagerly absorbing any information she willed upon him and watching her heal others with great interest.
He grew into a passionate and alert male. He notices things before others does. His eyes are constantly drifting to observe the sky and world around them (when he isn't working!). He's observant and trusts his instincts.
Wingless is a larger male and is pretty adept at fighting thanks to his natural strength. While he focuses on healing and guiding, it is best not to challenge him to a fight.
How did he become the pack's Elder?: He was always bright, even as a child. He showed promise. As a wee pup he followed his mother relentlessly, constantly grabbing at herbs and watching her with intent.
When it came time to train him, however, he was absentminded. His eyes were stuck to the sky, fascinated with it and all it held. He wanted to go there -- to see the world from above. He knew it was impossible, but as a teenager he was supposed to dream, right?
Frustrated, his mother warned him if he didn't keep his eyes on the ground he'd get himself into trouble. He ignored her warnings, although he did begin to pay attention as he began to realize it would soon come time to decide his position. He excelled at healing. Despite his larger frame and skill in battle, Wingless took to healing.
He was there when the first healer dropped. He was the one who ran to the Alpha, young eyes wild and heart hammering. It was him who watched his pack members fall and desperately clawed at all he learned in a hope for an answer.
It was also him who saw the birds migrating.
His eyes never left the sky long, and during one of his attempts to search for answers he looked upwards. The birds -- they were leaving. It wasn't the right time for it. No, it was... a sign. A warning sign. So he ran to the Alpha to speak of his find. He pushed and insisted; the cure was leaving. They needed to escape while they could. Follow the birds. Go where they felt was safe.
And the pack did.
His advice had found them a new home and way of life. He gladly accepted the title of Elder when it was offered. He would continue to help protect the pack and keep an eye on the sky around them. Looking for signs.

Future Plans?: Overcoming Grief - While her name will remain as a reminder of her loss, Dove will eventually learn to overcome her grief, with the aid of her friends and fellow pack mates. Eager to make personal connections in hopes of dulling her pain more quickly, she'll try to make friends and maybe even more intimate connections.
Rising Ambition - Without her mother to act as her best friend, she'll throw herself into providing for the pack, striving to become the best hunter in the pack. She'll be especially eager to prove herself both to the Alpha and to her own self during The Great Rush and The Hare Hunt!

Personality: Stoic and occasionally snappish when questioned, Sharp Beak does as she's bid by those above her or in her sector. She is determined to protect the Flock and the others in the pack, driven by a strong protective nature. However, Sharp is scared to allow herself to become vulnerable emotionally to others and so pushes them away when she may need them the most. As a result, her reputation is that she doesn't care to make friends and is generally viewed as a bitter wolf.
How has the Great Waste impacted her?: Her personality was strongly affected by the Great Waste. Formerly jovial, sassy and a little coy, Sharp became more true to her name after the Great Waste left her orphaned. Rather than sulk through her sorrows, Sharp became more protective of the wolves that remained in the pack. She trained harder, pushed herself to become stronger. She may not be able to protect them from a sickness, but she would protect them from any physical enemy.
Sharp also became more snappish and drew herself away from forming social bonds with her pack mates. She had felt so vulnerable when her parents died and she's determined not to let herself feel like that again, even if it means distancing herself emotionally from those she's sworn to protect.
