I'm all caught up on the show, by the way, so if you haven't watched until the end of the sixth season, you might want to proceed with caution.
Here are my lists, and the top three of each (by no means complete):
Those who deserved better:
Catelyn Stark Khal Drogo Shireen f*cking Baratheon
..though I'd add Sansa to the deserved better list. The poor girl. Can't catch a break.
Hodor is a depressing one.

Agreed on your assessment, too.
That Sansa still lives is absolutely remarkable. She endured so much under Cersei's thumb, and I'm so glad that she didn't have to end up marrying Joffrey Baratheon, my God.
Hodor... That episode... The playing with time is pure genius -- I've never seen time-travel handled in this way before, and it took my breath away.
But the death of Bran's Direwolf, Summer, is what still haunts me the most from that episode, oddly enough. I think only Nymeria (in the books, she's the matriarch of a local pack in the woods) and Ghost remain living, right?

@ .@ I was completely obsessed during the 6th season. ... I'd started watching the show after the 5th season aired. And the 6th season started up a month or two later. I was completely spoiled by being able to binge watch and having the next season start right away. And I mean.. obsesssssed.
I had to put the whole thing on the back burner and not think about the show at all because waiting for the 7th season to start was killer. DX I had been reading the books. I'm on the 3rd book. I started it last year and put it down for months. I really need to pick it back up again. XD; But, like I said, I had to give it all up because I knew it would be a looooong wait for the 7th season and I was going crazy. x -x
I always begin rewatching the series when a new season is coming up~ But man, I absolutely love GoT!!
Those who deserved better:
Absolutely Shireen! Like, she was just a child, how could they even do that? crying Catelyn Lady and Summer Hodor Khal Rickon Sansa, Jon and Arya all deserve better.
Those who deserve death:
Viserys, even though he is dead, he deserved it. The way it happened was very fitting too. Melisandre, I mean, kudos for bringing our boy Jon back but---
Most tragic and depressing:
Shireen crying Lady and Summer Jon, he honestly deserved a better life than what he got but I mean, he's doing great for all that has been thrown at him. Hodor

I hadn't even considered the Direwolves, Jon, Rickon, and Hodor -- all deserved better than their lot in life. Holy heck. emo

I know right? Sometimes it's easy to forget them with all that is going on, like Ygritte could be up there somewhere too! A lot of characters deserve so much more, Sam(well) could also be added to that, even though I'm happy he's with Gilly!

Ygritte definitely could be up there, too! As could Pyp; even as a minor character, he had a soft spot in my heart.
I'm so glad that the Sam x Gilly corner of the universe seems to be working out in their favor. At least the GoT world is kind to them -- and they certainly deserve it.

5 and 6 are by far among my favorite seasons, where a lot of stuff you've been waiting for actually happens. (No spoilers! But the plot advances much more quickly, I think.)
I have the first book! I hear that they're a ton of fun.
