Treasure was fuming. She glared at the little seathi, eying him like the heat of her stare might burn a hole in him. She was furious! She'd gone to the ship like he said. She'd found the spot he'd said to look, but it was torn asunder. It was clear that someone else had been there first, and that someone else had been like a hurricane in the sheltered holds of the sunken ship. She hadn't found anything unbroken, not even a lowly stool. It was all debris, muck, and broken promises.
"Who else did you tell?" she growled at the seathi, frustration destroying any diplomacy she might have possessed. "I believed you, you little eel! I believed you!"

Maeniel blanched with tension and with rage. He wasn't usually given to bouts of temper, but this was different. This brought back the memory of that traumatic day all in a rush. He had feared for his life when he'd told the stallion where to find the gold. He had thought he might die, and here was this mare scolding him for it.
"It was that stallion!" His voice was louder than hers and uncharacteristically unrestrained. "That stallion that came by when we first met. He knew we had been talking about something precious and he came back after you left!" He trembled with humiliation and fury. "He pulled me out of the water. I had to tell him where it was or he would have killed me right there." He had never felt so helpless and small in all his life. He still had a hard time living with himself after knowing how truly cowardly he was when faced with his own demise.

"WHAT?" Treasure's shock was genuine. She had a hard time even fathoming the concept initially. She was a rough and tumble sort herself, but she'd never dream of doing any more than the most superficial sort of harm to another soquili for the sake of an adventure. Not one that didn't mean her any trouble. She shook her head, denying it.
"It didn't happen like that," she snapped, knowing full well that it did. "Are you lyin' to me?" Irrationally, she wanted to take out her shock and pain on the seathi himself. Was that pain she felt? Why? She couldn't possibly be considered responsible for any of it, or so she told herself. Her thoughts were a jumble as she remembered the kelpi-lona. He'd seemed so familiar. She didn't want to think about who he might have been...

"I wish it didn't, but it did happen like that." Maeniel continued to shake, emotions roiling within him. "Even if I had told him, what right do you have to criticize me for it?" He glared, willing her to disagree. "That wreck has been there for decades! Anyone could have raided it by now. You aren't my friend and I certainly don't owe you anything!" Especially not after this. He hoped to never see her again after this. He didn't know if he could talk to her again after losing his self control like this...
