Pain

It ran through his body like wildfire and it was all he felt before it started to numb over. He wanted to feel nothing. His heart hurt so much still and he felt like nothing was ever going to make it go away. His love for Iona was stuck on him like glue and even the gashes he suffered didn't help. He limped slowly through the dark woods with his lantern illuminating the area around him enough to see what he needed to see. He got into a tussle with a few wolves, but they inflicted enough damage to him. He may have been bigger, but there were at least five of them. He was outnumbered and they really did sink their teeth and claws into him fairly nicely. As a result, a trail of blood from his hind leg followed him with every single step he took before finally succumbing to the pain. He fell to the ground unable to go any further for the moment. He was too tired and too injured to even make the journey to his home. Though it wasn't much of a home anyway.

All he had was in some small cave with an overhang and it was nothing compared to his families land out in the forest. He would never be allowed back there. His father would end up chasing him out and he was too damn stubborn to tell him he was sorry. In a weird way, he missed his father and his other siblings except it would never be something he would admit. He couldn't admit that to anyone because it showed too much emotion. He was trained from a young age to not feel any of that. To not let it get in the way of battle and most of the time it didn't except now his emotions were all he thought about. Maybe he could have done something different with Iona? Maybe he could have just listened to his father? If he wasn't so stubborn he could have be the son his father was proud of.

Now look at him. He was injured again and facing death if he didn't get home soon. Something would end up finding him here and he was in no condition to fight. He was useless until he rested. He lowered his head for a moment before hearing the snapping of twigs causing him to turn his head and slowly lift his body up off the ground. It hurt and he gritted his teeth to deal with the pain as much as he could. He couldn't die even though weeks ago, he wanted to just end his life. The only one he had was Iona and now that she was gone, he was alone ago. No family. No friends. No mate. He was a broken warrior with nowhere to even go.

He braced himself for whatever was coming and hid the pain he felt as much as he could.

Step.

Stop.

Listen.

Sniff.

Step. Step.

Each step was as soft as possible, the soft ground assisting in her attempts at stealth. Never one for any sort of moisture, she would have to admit that the conditions were ideal. Easily blending in with the darkness, her markings assisted with her movements, seeming to move with the shadows as her muscles rippled and quivered. Dainty steps were followed by several pauses, ears flicking to and fro as she assessed the surroundings with her head held low. Easier to see things running towards you, usually.

At the moment, however, her head was low for a much different reason. Ears listened for the sounds of whatever had been bleeding all over quite foolishly, and she could only wonder when and if she would find the splatters that indicated panic. Panicked prey was so much easier to deal with; They usually ended up killing themselves and made her hunt that much easier. Well, if you could call it 'hunting' with your prey already that helpless. As it were, the trail continued steadily. Shakily, of course, as if the creature was in pain. Of course, while she couldn't tell which part of the body was injured, Reila had a faint inkling that whatever she would find had little to no chance of running from her. A sneer made it's way 'cross her muzzle as she got closer; the blood was warmer.

The ground here was drier, firmer, and less helpful to her stealth. Not that it mattered, such injured prey would have no hope of running once she was able to burst into a full-on run. No, it would die, and she would watch it die. Slowly and painfully, and she would relish each and every moment of the--

Head shooting up, she stared at the stallion, ears attentive and perked, eyes narrowed and muscles taut. Looking him over, noting both his injury and the quickest way to bolt out of there, should the scenario play out against her. For now, her curiosity was piqued, and she simply...stared. No aggression, no real show of threat, only curiosity.

He stared right back and didn't move one inch from his spot. He couldn't or he knew he would end up toppling over. Standing was becoming a chore for him and he wanted to make sure this mare wasn't a threat before he decided to flop back down on the cold ground. He gritted his teeth some more unable to really open his mouth to say anything to her and it was obvious she didn't want to speak either. So for a long moment, he stood there examining her and making sure she was no real threat. When he came to a conclusion and before he could really gently lay down on the ground, his back leg gave out. He fell down to the ground with a thud causing him to groan in slight pain. He could handle and endure a lot of pain, but the bite mark on his hind leg was excruciating. He wasn't going to be able to walk for a couple hours or maybe even a day unless he just pushed through it.

"If your here to eat me then I'm not going down without a fight.." He said in a gruff tone as he rose to his feet one more time this time fighting all the pain his body felt. He had to hold onto some kind of dignity especially in the state he was in right now. He then heard a loud crackle of thunder and knew that a storm was coming. He had to get back to his cave or he was going to end up getting sick in a cold rain storm. He turned away from her and slowly began to walk feeling a few drops hit his back. This was good because the rain would clean his wounds. "If your not looking to eat me then go away..." He said in a grumpy voice. He wasn't in the mood and if she was just going to stand there and stare, he wasn't going to bother with her.

He took one more step and felt a shooting pain run through his back causing him to stop for a moment. He was too proud and stubborn to ask for help especially from a strange. He heard another loud cackle of thunder before the rain started to really come down drenching him in a matter of minutes.

He was use to helping others, not others helping him. He let out an agitated sigh before turning his head slightly so that he could look at her again. He didn't even think she would be able to keep him up. She was smaller then him. He was a behemoth like his father. Built like a tank. "You will get sick out here.." He said to her completely missing the fact that she was indeed part kelpi. He wondered what she would do for a moment before turning back around. He slowly continued on his way taking a few steps at a time so that he didn't hurt himself.

About to take a step forward when he collapsed, Reila simply froze in place again, watching him struggle. His muscle movements, his eye motions, even the way his nostrils moved were noted. Each movement meant something, it was only up to her to decipher everything.

Jolting back into the here and now with his voice, her still-raised leg was lowered and she tilt her head slightly to one side, the bangs of her mane falling into her eyes. "Eat you?" Sounding utterly confused, she chanced a step forwards, eyes glittering with...something. Bordering on curiosity. Watching him rise, her ears perked again, her muscles tensed but she didn't back down, not one bit. No, this had gone from a hunt to...well, she didn't know exactly what was going to happen, or what had happened to injure the stallion.

But she was going to find out.

"No." Her answer to all three of his statements was quite simple, and even as the storm rolled in, she remained. The rain was welcomed, especially on her dried-out tail, though the thunder could tone it down a bit. When he walked, she walked. When he stopped, she stopped. Almost stalking him, mimicing his movements, though without the horrible limp.

"...You will get more injured if you continue." There may have been an edge of concern in there, if you listened closely enough. "Rest." Speeding up just enough to catch up, her head near to where his flank was, taking care to keep space between the two of them. No use in crowding the guy. "Plenty of shelter to the right. You should take care on your hunts, don't let things get you." Boy was she making a lot of assumptions right now.

Now she was going to nag him about his wounds and probably scold him for how weak he was. He paused looking back at her gazing at her through his bone mask not sure what he should think after hearing her words. Did she actually care about his safety? This stranger cared? He flicked his tail and just when he was about to take another step, he lost his footing. He went down with a hard thud causing him to groan out in pain feeling the rain beat down on him harder. This was a mess. She was seeing him at his worse and he wished she didn't. It was embarrassing and it just showed her that he wasn't some strong tough stallion. His father would pick on him so much for this. "Hunts? Heh.." It wasn't exactly a hunt, it was more like he accidentally ran into them in his travels. Of course stubborn old him didn't believe in running away either so he didn't.

He rose to his feet one more time feeling his body ache even more from the gesture. He needed to rest in a place that wasn't so out in the open. So he listened to her advice and went to the right to see if he could find some shelter. He was sure she was going to follow him and he didn't mind too much as long as she was helpful. So far she was and he wondered if she had any healing remedies as well, but he was very doubtful of that. "I wasn't hunting...I ran into a pack and fought them off though it did in a way help relieve other pain I'm feeling.." He said through gritted teeth. He never liked talking about his emotions and this was like any other time. He hated doing it because it meant he had to open up to others that were complete strangers. He had no friends or family so most of his situations he dealt with internally, which was never a good thing.

To his surprise, he saw a small ridge in the distance with a overhang that would shield them from the storm. This was a good sign that things might be starting to look up for him. He limped his way over, trying to get there as quickly as possible before gently lowering himself to the ground this time. He looked over to see the mare was still present and let out a small sigh. "I will heal up fine...The rain cleaned my wounds so now I just have to wait about a day before I can start moving again." He said to her not sure if she was worried about him or not. It was hard to tell. "If your worried don't be. I've been through this many times so I know my own body. So if you want you can continue on. You don't have to stay around me...it won't be a very exciting day." He said hearing another crackle of thunder seeing that the storm was a pretty bad one.

"Though...perhaps you should wait out this storm." He nodded moving over a little bit so that she could fit under. There was enough room for the both of them. More then enough actually, but the gentleman inside him still wanted to make sure she was comfortable. It was a trait he picked up from his family. "I guess introductions would be nice...I'm Zachariah..but you can call me Zach." It had been a long time since he told anyone his name. Most of the time he the meeting was so brief that a name exchange never took place.

"Nothing should find us in this bad of a storm." He reassured her. If it did happen that they were followed and attacked he would protect her. Even though he was injured, he would fight them off until he couldn't fight anymore giving her enough time to run away if need be. He was that kind of male. A protector more then a warrior, he just hasn't seen it yet.

Remaining silent throughout the short trek, Reila gave no acknowledgement to his words, nor to his stumbles and falls. Though, each time he did go down, or nearly go down, she started. Muscles quivered and tensed as if she were ready to pounce on him at any moment. At least, from the outside perspective that's what it seemed like.

Caring wasn't something she wanted to do. Hearing about him probably healing up only received a small grunt in response, despite wanting to know how long it would take. His wounds begged to be tended to, but she forced herself to let the rain take care of it all. Helping him find a unicorn or some other healer would be the extent of her 'help', despite wanting to do more. Even helping him to shelter was 'too much', but how could she just abandon someone like that? You know, like how her mother did?

Watching him settle down, she simply stood in place. Her mane hung limply, completely drenched and making her look more than a little bedraggled. Despite her kelpie-like qualities, she found no solace in any body of water, and getting wet wasn't her favorite thing. But now, she stood still as a sentinel. Tail twitching to and fro, ears perked and rotating, listening for anything that might try to jump them. Well...Him. Reila still had full use of her legs to book it out of there. Hearing anything was becoming hard to do though, with thunder becoming more and more frequent.

"It's dangerous. Easy to sneak around, in a storm like this. I should know." Taking a few steps closer to the mock shelter, she stopped short of actually being close enough to get in under it, again taking up the posture of a sentinel. Though, the stoic expression she had been wearing was gone. Replaced by curiosity and, yes, worry.

The option was there to leave. He was inviting her to go. Finishing her hunt would be easy after all, there in front of her was helpless prey. How easy would it be to turn and go from helper to killer? He had no clue, his guard was down, he was laying down in front of her. She could cripple him further, wait until he was fatigued, then go in for the kill.

"....Reila."

Dark thoughts plagued her mind, but were not acted upon this time. Instead, she plopped down, herself, right in the middle of the storm. What room was in there was for him. He was the injured, the one who needed space. It was dry, she was wet. It made no sense to make it worse for him. the only show of her own guard being down was the fact that she was also lying down.

"I will stay, Zachariah. Until you are fully mended."

Taking note of the mare's name, he gave a disgruntled snort in response to her staying with him. He wasn't a baby, but he really could use the company after all. Traveling alone for a long time had it's wear and tear on the soul, so some friendly banter was always needed. He watched as she sat there in the rain looking calm and quiet like an old statue or something. If he wasn't so stuck on Iona, he would have said Reila looked stunning just like that. All soaked and glistening in the pouring rain. He, of course, didn't want to believe any of that so he pushed any thought like those to the back of his mind. He couldn't stand the whole infatuation thing and it wasn't something he needed right now. She was a stranger to him and that is how she would remain for as long as he could endure her company. "Stubborn one.." He mumbled to her and was immediately reminded of himself. He was just as stubborn and rarely listened to what others told him. It was a flaw in his bloodline that supposedly he inherited from his grandfather and for once he was happy the old goat was dead.

"So what were you doing out here?" He asked with no aggression hinted in his voice this time. For once he was calm and resting like he should have been doing over an hour ago. "Are you the good samaritan type?" He asked lifting his eyebrow ever so slightly even though she wouldn't be able to see such a gesture because of his mask. "I guess what I'm trying to say is...thank you..If it wasn't you that came along it could have been something else that would have ended my life." He said to her going back to his gruff disgruntled tone of voice. She was one of the few who saw him like that and he was hoping it would stay that way. He didn't want any weak impressions of himself to spread across the entire land.

After those words he didn't speak another word to her and drifted off into his own quiet state of being. He wasn't a long talker because he was holding back so many things. So many emotions that he didn't want to get out. Unlike his father, he wasn't a cold hearted stallion. His father wouldn't bat an eye before killing something, but Zachariah had problems doing so. He wasn't ruthless and cold. He was just misunderstood and his father never fully got to understand that part of him. He didn't want to be a warrior and still he was pushed to do what he didn't want to do. So now he was a emotional wreck. A bomb waiting to explode from the inside. Most of the time all he felt was numbing pain especially now that Iona left. It was the one thing that was keeping him grounded, but not anymore. He had nothing that would keep his emotions at bay.

He felt everything especially love even if he didn't want to admit it. When he was young he was broken in by going through grueling training at a very young age where he had his first kill only a few weeks after leaving his basket. At first he loved being a warrior and doing something good, until he realized that was the only thing his father cared about. He never cared about him as a being only a weapon. He sighed lightly at the past flooding his mind before closing his eyes to listen to the soft patter of the rain against the ground.

After a long time, he finally opened his mouth to speak while giving Reila a side glance. His eyes were almost sad, but still emotionless and unreadable.

"Reila...did you ever want to die?"

'Good samaritan' was probably the last thing Reila ever thought she'd been compared to. 'Evil freak' was the last thing she'd been called, by a foal who'd stumbled upon her tearing into the innards of a downed deer. Not even given the chance to see what the wretched little thing looked like, she was just thankful it ran away screaming those words before she snapped and took, well, would try to take, it's life.

"Hunting." A simple enough answer for a simple enough question. Her tail thumped against the ground repeatedly, becoming covered in more and more mud, flinging some here and there as the time passed. "I was hunting. Following one thing, then..." Finally turning away from scanning the area, she looked at him, almost dead in the eyes. Red eyes that, if you only glanced at them, were nothing short of predatory. "...Your blood." Again, simple enough, and she could let it hang there. "I came along, hunting you, but..." she shook her head, looking away again, busying herself with guard duty. "I'm not that kind of hunter."

Waiting didn't bother her. After all, how many years now had she been in solitude? How many years since she was abandoned and left floundering, trying to get a hoof on what she was supposed to be? Family? What was that? The word sounded both like something she wanted nothing to do with, and something she desperately wished she had. Either way, she too became lost in her own thoughts momentarily, at least up until she was jarred back down to reality.

The question came out of nowhere, blindsided her. Something so...personal to ask a complete stranger. It was odd.

What was even more odd was the fact that she had an answer.

"Yes."

At that, her tail stopped it's assault on the ground and simply lay there, covered in mud, grime, whatever it was covering the ground.

"Sometimes, I still do." The predatory glint in her eyes had completely faded by now, instead replaced by what could only be called despair. Even the next breath she took was shaky as she lowered her gaze to the ground. "If that's what I'm supposed to do in the end, then so be it. But I refuse to go down without a fight." She grit her teeth, painfully reminded of her lack of actual predatory features.

"If you feel that way, Zach, I implore you to fight. If only to defy what might be a screwed-up destiny. I will not ask why you might feel that way, but..." Another shaky breath, perhaps hiding what night have been a sob. Showing emotions had always been far too easy for her, and it was only because she strived to be what she was not that she fought so desperately to come off as emotionless.

"It's pathetic to simply lie down and let it all go."

He was falling further and further into darkness...

Darkness consumed him.

Time passed by so slowly that he didn't even know how long it had been. A whole entire day went by and Zachariah had no idea that he passed out in the mare in mid conversation. He was weaker then he had thought and still his dreams were nightmares. They haunted him all the time. Images of the past and images of what could become his future filled his thoughts. He was his father's first born son and if anything happened to his father he was meant to take over for him. He was meant to be something he didn't want to be. He wanted to get away from it all. He wanted to run as far as he could to a place where no one would be able to find him. He grimaced and groaned in his sleep as more menacing thoughts took over.

His mind was shrouded in darkness. In thoughts that always haunted him.

"Daddy how come you won't let me mend the graves like Hania does?" A small little colt wiggled his tail beside a rather large stallion as he looked at him with big eyes.

"Because that is not what my first born son is going to do. You are going to be a warrior. That is your destiny and it's going to stay that way." A disgruntled voice said with venom laced on his tongue.

"But.." A frown formed on the colts muzzle.

"No buts..if you do not do this then your no son of mine." Without so much as another word, the stallion turn away from his son and walked away.

It was no mystery that his father was a horrible. He didn't know how to handle having children and did exactly what his father did to him. He was trained exactly how Zach was trained. He was turned into a vicious killer that was never meant to feel anything. He feared for whoever else was going to face the same fate as he did.

"I hate you!" A voice echoed as a young adult stallion stood his ground before once again another large stallion who was much taller then him.

"How dare you disrespect me!" The older male shouted before lounging forward and pushing the younger down onto the ground harshly.

With a thud, the younger male fell to the ground scraping his body up as he fell against a bed of rocks. It hurt, but he didn't show any pain. "You never loved me! You only used me! What kind of father are you!? I hate you!" He shouted as loudly as he could hearing the forest around them go quiet. He was on the edge of an embankment. He was only a few inches from falling off the side and tumbling down into the water below.

"If you hate me that much...and that is really what you think of me then maybe you need a more extreme lesson.." He lounged forward and knocked his son over the edge watching him tumble all the way down into the water. He didn't care that his son was going to be bruised up from the rocks he hit against or the cuts he will endure. He needed to teach him discipline. There was silence and then...

Gasp!

Zachariah woke up in a cold sweat feeling like he couldn't breath as he remembered everything that happened that day. It was horrible and he was always reliving it in his dreams. He didn't know how his father could be so cruel to him. Forgiving him was the last thing on his mind. He looked around hearing the soft patter of the rain still and let out a soft sigh. It had been a little over a day, even though he didn't know that he thought it was still that night. It was the next evening and it was pretty late. He looked around for any signs of Reila and found none. Maybe she left him? He wasn't good company after all and the thought of someone actually sticking around him for long was something that just didn't happen.

Sore and numb, he slowly rose to his feet feeling a lot less pain then he did before. He slowly began to walk out from under the little alcove letting the soft drops of water hit his body. He needed to continue on, even if he never really got to say goodbye to the only mare that showed him any kindness in a long time.
