Rider
Name: Fi'o (Finora)
Age: 45
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Homosexual
Rank: Holdless
History:
Fi'o was a weyrbrat, born at Fort Weyr to a wherhandler family, and never had an eye to dragons at all. It was whers all the way, and her love for the creatures and the handler community was deep and unwavering. As she went through training with the other apprentices, a divide quickly became apparent between the two basic 'types' of wher apprentice: those who wanted a wher because they wanted a wher, and those who wanted a wher because they couldn't have a dragon. It didn't take long for them to form into true cliques, and it wasn't much longer before Finora emerged as leader of the former. A naturally combative personality mixed with adolescence and a group to belong to, she became a bully in her teenage turns, leading the 'wher-born' in targetting the 'second-choicers,' and occasionally coming into conflict with actual Candidates, as well. This phase didn't last forever, though, and her extreme aggressiveness gradually faded as she approached the end of tumultuous adolescence. She still wasn't pleasant by any means, but snark replaced beating people up, for the most part.
Despite the fact that they professed not to want or like dragons, she and her friends usually attended Hatchings anyway for the spectacle of it. They did just that in her 19th turn, about a week before they were due to participate in a wher egg ceremony...a chance that Finora would never get, because a dragonet chose her right out of the Stands. It was a shock, to say the least, and not because he was brown, but because it was Finora. No one was more shocked than she, and though she adored her Ivanhoth from that moment on, she did not adore everything that came with him. She was in conflict with her fellow Weyrlings from the start, and often acted out with a massive disregard for rules and authority.
Although they took some convincing, Fi'o maintained her ties with the handlers and retained most of her friends. She and Ivanhoth spent every free moment they had with them, and the brown came to share his rider's love of the whers and their people. Over the course of the next few turns, Fi'o's friendship with a greenhandler named Corla (whom she had gone through apprenticeship with) turned into something more, and the two became weyrmates. This and the passage of time settled Fi'o somewhat, and they fell into the rank and file of wingriding with less trouble than they'd made in their Weyrlinghood, but still with no shortage of snark.
When plans for the Revolution began to stir, Fi'o and Ivanhoth were obvious and easy converts, and would eventually transfer from Fort to Trine to help further the plots there. Corla and Corsk transferred as well, and for awhile life continued much as it had. But then came the battle for the Weyr, and Corla and her green wher were early casualties. Fi'o reacted violently to the loss of her love and semi-peaceful existence, and reverted to the bully she once was and then some, remaining so even after the Wherholds were established.
Absolutely dedicated to the cause, Fi'o remained loyal to the Wherholds and their ideals throughout the Wherwars, and when Malvren finally fell, she intended to go down fighting. Ivanhoth had other ideas, however, and plucked up his injured rider and fled with her to the jungles of the Southern Continent. For several months, they scraped and survived together, with Ivanhoth hunting for and protecting his bonded. Their longterm outlook was grim at best, until a fortunate chance encounter; Ivanhoth, always on the lookout for felines, happened to kill one that had been terrorizing a small group of Holdless. Suspicious but grateful, they allowed the pair to spend a few days with them. A few days turned into weeks, into months, as the group became ever fonder of their adopted dragon and his gruff rider, and of their usefulness in hunting and keeping the group safe. They acknowledge that there is some risk to 'keeping' the pair, but maintain that their unofficial mascot is worth it.
Fi'o still clings nominally to the cause of the Wherholds, mostly out of spite, but over the course of time and distance her dedication has faded. She and Ivanhoth have found a new family, one that will hopefully fare better than their last.
Description:
Tall (5'11"), lanky, and angular, there is very little about Fi'o that could be described as soft or truly feminine. Overall, her appearance is rather androgynous - while it's not impossible to tell for certain that she is female, it does take another, closer look or two. Alternately, some people may see her dragon and just assume that this ambiguous-looking rider is male. She doesn't care either way, and doesn't actively try to dress in a manner that would strongly indicate one gender over the other. Fi'o is Fi'o, and that's that.
Her skin tone is on the darker side of the spectrum, her eyes are honey-brown, and her hair - black with encroaching streaks of gray - is usually cut to shoulder-length but often styled in a harsh manner.
Personality:
Fi'o is and always will be a harsh, combative individual, although to what degree has varied over the course of her life. It can manifest as anything from snarky words to actual, physical combat, and following the Revolution, she swung hard and fast to the latter end of that spectrum. During the time of the Wherholds, she was bitterly and viciously set on revenge against the Resistance, and willing to do everything in her power to see the Revolution through and ensure that the sacrifices made were not in vain. Winning at Trine might have given her some measure of peace, but despite their best efforts, it couldn't be done. The victories at Benden and Malvren did little to soothe her, rendering her quick to lash out verbally or physically than ever before, even at an ally. She remained so for a time after the Wherwars, but with time she has finally settled to some degree. She's gruff, but no longer so quick to violence unless there is a real threat present.
As ruthless as she can be, however, she is unwaveringly loyal to friends and loved ones, as evidenced by her long association with and allegiance to the wherhandlers. They had always been her family, and not even being a rider could change that; now, the Holdless are her family. With those treasured few she is especially close to, Fi'o's harsh demeanor softens somewhat, and she is an incredibly loving and supportive partner and very protective of her friends. Betray her loyalty, though, and she will never forgive you. She is a difficult person to get to know in the first place, suspicious of strangers - particularly of other riders - and tends to be guarded and closed-off, deflecting unwanted attempts to get close to her with barbed words.
Fi'o is a very visually-oriented person, who processes and reacts to the details of her environment very quickly. This is as much disadvantage as it is advantange, however, as she has a difficult time focusing on any one thing if multiple things are happening at once. This applies to anything from conversations to gathers to battles, and the more that's going on around her, the slower her reaction time will become as it gets harder to process so much at once. She fares better in one-on-one interactions or small groups, where her attention isn't constantly pulled in different directions.
She has a weak spot for those who need protection (as long as they're on her side), as she has a tendency to project onto them; she couldn't save Corla and Corsk, and so she feels compelled to save the ones she can. Coming to grips with any failure is difficult to her, and that was the worst of all, one that will haunt her for the rest of her life.

Dragon
Name: Ivanhoth
Age: 26
Colour: Brown
Description: x
Ivanhoth is not a dragon who would ever win a dragon beauty contest. 'Short and stout' describes him very well, or if you're being less kind about it, squat. He's small for a brown, and his legs and snout are a bit short for his size, though his hind legs are exceptionally powerful. He's a burly, pudgy little fellow, with long headknobs that don't quite fit the rest of him. He's sort of cute, in his own chunky little way.
Size: Small
Build: Above Average
Personality:
Similar to Fi'o, Ivanhoth is very visually oriented when it comes to interactions of any sort. The small brown has a habit of wanting to know what is going on, especially when it comes to dramatics. Loud noises especially cause him to enter on a scene, though he is very careful to be very polite. Rather than bursting in and attempting to take control of a situation, the brown instead asks if help is needed. If he is refused, he will turn away. This unfortunately means that he has a poor time being friends with anyone who tells him to go away when they really want his attention. In fact, Ivanhoth usually takes exactly what people tell him to do to heart, no matter what their outward appearance suggests. (While that green may sound like she's crying, she has said she is perfectly happy, so there's nothing to do here!).
For this reason, Ivanhoth tends to have the easiest time with people that tell him exactly what they honestly feel. He is very inclined to want to please people, and if they request help of him, or need someone to talk to, Ivanhoth is there all the way. He's the type of dragon you can really count on to listen and not talk if you need it, and he has a tendency to look on the positive side of life. He seems to believe that there is always a silver lining, and will discover it and tell it to you. It is, in some ways, almost an intellectual challenge for the brown.
As a Wing dragon, Ivanhoth is very easy-going due to his ability to take what is told to him exactly. If there is no given answer to a situation, Ivanhoth takes a great deal of faith from what others have told him in the past, and he is not afraid of asking something he is not sure of. There is very little shame in this dragon's heart. He is not afraid of sounding stupid, or making a mistake. Ivanhoth is very into the belief that you cannot discover the right way to do something unless you have discovered the wrong way as well, and he holds others to this if they ask for his advice. He is more than willing to suggest a solution to something they are confused on and help them make their choices. These, unfortunately, may not always be the best ones, as Ivanhoth relies on the words others have told him in the past and lacks a strong logical sense of his own.
This does not hinder his social interactions, and Ivanhoth is very social if only because he craves the attention of others. Ivanhoth is a very physical dragon, whether there is a sexual component or not. He wants to stand close to his friends, and he wants to be near his rider at almost all times. The few times that Ivanhoth panics is when His is not there with him, though he tries to pretend there is nothing wrong. Since a Hatchling, he has gotten better, but he still cannot be apart from Fi'o for much longer than a few hours.
Ivanhoth will mostly chase greens as his smaller size makes chasing golds more difficult. Those females he catches are bound to get a nice taste of his affections, and Ivanhoth is a bit of a "cuddler" after flights. He lingers around for quite some time afterwards, talking it up with both the rider and the dragon he's with, and dotes on the dragon he has caught with nuzzles and tends to snuggle up to them.
Other:
Ivanhoth was drawn to Fi'o because he saw the deep conviction that lay within her, something he lacked and needed. She is someone who will always tell him things exactly like they are, including exactly how she feels, and give him the direction that he desires; her wants are his wants, and he devotes himself to her goals. He also tempers her to some degree, and is often able to soothe and calm her when others cannot, though past a certain point even he can't moderate her.
He adores whers, whose simpler nature appeals to his need for honesty of feelings.
