Character Profile Banner

First Name:
Devlin
Honorific:
D'lin.
Nicknames:
Dev
Date of Birth:
02.11.2981
Place of Birth:
Eamane Hold
Gender & Sexuality:
Male - Heterosexual

Appearance:

Devlin is well muscled with particularly strong shoulders and arms from his time working in the forge. His hands are worn with calluses and rather large but surprisingly light and gentle when tending to small children or animals. He's a bit on the tall side of average and can seem rather intimidating at first glance because of both his height and broad shoulders. His hair is a light sandy brown and while he tried to keep it short for comforts sake (forge's were hot and now it's just habit) it has a tendency to curl up at the ends creating a rather roguish or mussed look no matter how much he tries to flatten it down. He is typically well tanned from spending time outdoors and has pale grey eyes and a strong jawline.

Devlin would likely be considered 'imposing' or 'striking' rather then outwardly handsome and this impression is only punctuated by a scar that runs across his left shoulder and part of his chest.

Personality:

Calm under pressure - Devlin is not one to panic at the first sign of trouble , nor one to stress out when a deadline approaches, as far as he's concerned stressing out about things isn't helpful, the only way things are going to be handled in a timely efficient manner is to sit down and logically figure it all out. And he will figure them out...he will devote as much effort as necessary to do so.

Loyal and Protective - Once you have been named friend then you can rest assured that Devlin will always be in your corner. Devlin would run through fire to help a friend in trouble and when it comes to females it's even worse..perhaps it was growing up with two sisters but this guy simply cannot stand to see a women being berated, even if he doesn't know her Devlin will come to her rescue..weather she wants it or not. A trait that could either get him the reputation of being a white knight or a bothersome irritant depending on the situation and who you might ask.

Strong Work Ethic - Devlin gets the job done...as long as the job has a point to it. This is not the guy to send out for silly pointless errands, he has better things to do with his time you know..but when it matters, when it's important... or if you really need it then Devlin will see it through.

Slightly Pessimistic - Although Devlins likes to think he has a good outlook on life and will certainly tell people that it's all good, truthfully, in his own mind things are a little bit different and he is far more prone to seeing the bad in a situation then the good. This is not always a bad trait..as it makes him observant and aware when it comes to troubling situations but in everyday life it makes him a bit of a perfectionist, anything 'bad' tends to stand out like glaring flaws in the perceived perfection of his mind and he's never really happy until such things are fixed and it gives him the tendency to think that those around him are expecting him to fail, something that he is a little bit paranoid about.

Socially Reserved - If your looking for someone who likes to party or drink or spend time at social functions - Devlin is not your guy, he's most definitely a work before pleasure sort of fellow and unfortunately, with Devlin, the work never seems to end. This can make him seem aloof and sometimes cold to those who don't know him and he tends to have only passing patience for those wile away their time in less productive pursuits.

Emotional Bottler - All that time remaining cool and collected under pressure has to have some sort of side effect right? Although Devlin seems to have a long fuse and sometimes infinite patience, the truth of the matter is that he's just internalizing everything and eventually it will all come out in some form or another and when Devlins fuse eventually blows it's kind of scary. You know what they say...you should always worry about the quiet ones.

Likes:

Solving Problems - Devlin is never happier then when he's finally able to crack a problem he's been working on.
Efficiently - There's not much that can make Devlin more irritable then a task that is taking twice as long as it should because someone didn't think things through properly.
Keeping Busy - Devlin really doesn't know what to do with himself when there's downtime, he's far happier with a nice list of things to work though.

Dislikes:

Slackers - Everyone has a job to do and everyone should get it done.
Lying - Devlin can't abide it, in any way shape or form..once should always tell the truth or say nothing at all.
Cruelty/ Bullying - Needlessly tormenting others is a quick way to get on Devlins bad side.
Smithcrafting - There is a deep hatred of this craft..though not of the people who learn it, just as long as he never has to go near a forge again.

Strengths:

Loyal.
Ethical.
Dependable

Weaknesses:

Perfectionist
Pessimistic
Self Critical

Written History

Devlin grew up as part of a family where the father was definitely the king of his own little castle. This wasn't necessarily a bad thing but he was certainly a proud man, proud of his family and proud of his work in the field of Smithcraft. Imagine his dismay then when his wife birthed two daughters - both petite and completely uninterested in a field such as smithcraft. After several years of unsuccessfully trying for another child he was finally granted a son..and four years after that a second one.

He had great plans for his son and from a very early age attempted to push him in a specific direction. He wanted his son to follow in his footsteps - which was understandable and quite normal. Unfortunately Devlin had no intrest in this life - and while he learned smithcraft because his father forced it on him, he detested it. Allot.

The work was hard, hot and repetitive, it kept him chained to the forge when Devlin would much rather be enjoying his time elsewhere, but his father had no sympathy for his son's green thumb and adamantly refused to let him pursue work in farming. Devlin liked growing things but his father considered this a field for lesser people. There was no way his only son was going to become a farmer of all things. His older sisters were spared the pressure placed upon Devlin as they sought to become weavers and housewives like their mother and it wasn't long before Devlin began to resent their relative freedoms. It was absurd he knew because they could hardly be blamed for it and they had other limits placed on them - for instance whom they would end up marrying. His father was keen to move up in Pern society and Devlin knew he wasn't afraid to use his daughters to help build those proverbial bridges. Or his son for that matter - although in a different way.

Devlins father was forever more boasting about his son's skill in the forge, about how advanced he was already and how he would surely walk the tables early once he found a suitable helper to replace him at home. Devlin knew this was mostly a lie - his work was...functional...but there was no heart in it, no extra care that set it above and beyond anyone else's work because he just didn't care about the field. It wasn't long before Devlins apathy towards smithcraft would backfire on him. Once should always pay attention in the forge it was a dangerous place and when one misplaced tool caused him to trip while moving a hot bit of metal - Devlin paid the price with a nasty burn across his shoulder and chest. It was painful and left an awful looking scar...but it did allow him time away from the forge while he healed so Devlin couldn't find himself too sorry for the accident. In fact he pretty much considered the pain worth it.

His father on the other hand was appalled - it certainly put a stop to his boasting, how could he claim Devlin was extraordinarily skilled when he bore such an obvious scar proclaiming him to be clumsy in the forge? It did not however lessen the pressure put on him by his father. He'd just have to work harder his father told him to overcome this mark of shame and prove himself skilled. A 'learning experience' his father called it and filled more and more of Devlins time with lectures and scroll reading to do with Metal Smithing as his burn healed to the point where he could be back in the forge and the heat no longer bother it.

Devlin was not looking forward to this and if he was truthful, would have to admit that he'd been perfectly capable of going back to the forge for a while now...but had been stalling and just a bit untruthful about how well his burn had healed leaving a guilt that ate at him. He was starting to get desperate when the search rider appeared on the horizon. When Devlin was singled out as a possible candidate, there was a great deal of arguing about weather he would be allowed to go - however after Devlin pointed out that his younger brother was far more inclined to go somewhere with Smithcraft (he actually seemed to like the trade) his father's arguments were dropped. Devlin seized the chance to escape the way a drowning man seizes a piece of floating wood. A lifeline had been thrown to him and Devlin was going to make the best of it, become better for it. Flying to the Weyr with the search rider was just the start he told himself, of a life without forges.
