Skagos climbed the final stretch up the embarkment, claws scratching against the ice and snow. He panted as he reached the top, grateful to finally be on a flat surface again. A shadow fell over him. There stood the Other, distinguishable from his brother by his scent even if not by his appearance.
"Yes?" asked the Other, his voice like the cracking of ice. "What news do you bring?"
Skagos sucked in another few breaths to steady himself, and then told him. "A herd. A herd is on the move and coming this way."
The Other smiled, revealing jagged blue teeth. It was time to prepare.

Bite noisily gnawed a bone to one side, but White Walker's attention was entirely fixated on his brother. "A herd?" he asked, hissing breathlessly. "How many are in this herd? What direction do they come from?" His long tail already was set to twitching behind him. The blade-like end of it skimmed the surface of the snow kicking up occasional flakes and clumps.
They had not had intruders for some time. They had long since driven away or killed the other local soquili. White Walker had assumed that their reputation would keep all but maybe a few lone idiot heros off their mountains, but apparently not. Perhaps they had simply been too successful in scaring off the competition, and none now remained to warn the others.

It was always like his brother to ask the unimportant questions while leaving the pertinent ones unspoken. The Other bit back a sneer of disdain for that. Both his brother and his hulking idiot of a bear were dependent on his intellect to guide them. Of this he was certain.
"They are close to twenty," he replied, humoring White Walker by addressing some of his foolishness. "They are closer to the base of the mountains, where the snow is thinner." This he had heard from Skagos' report. The wolf had done his job well in patrolling the borders of their territory.
"They are the children of summer and do not travel swiftly." This term he applied to them with distaste. Any who embraced the warmth were lesser in his eyes. "They will need to cross higher on the mountains, but we have time to prepare for them." From the looks of it, they meant to cross the mountain range. There was only one place within miles where that was easy. That would be the ideal place for them to lie in wait...

"Twenty?" White Walker tossed his head and bared his teeth with anger. He was frustrated, even seething. His tail thrashed faster now, digging gouges into the snow underneath. "We cannot fight so many! Not even with the bears and the wolves together!" Bite raised her head to stare unblinking at her companion as White Walker raised his voice. Her mouth dropped open in a silent roar, as if echoing his anger.
"We cannot fight so many," he repeated, hissing in aggravation at that knowledge. Even if the herd had no true warriors, twenty was more than they could slay at once. That had to be why they ignored the warnings and continued. The heat-lovers were arrogant in their confidence, and it tore at him to think that they might be correct.

"Be silent!" snapped the Other, ashamed that his own brother would give up so quickly. "Be silent and listen." Though there was no need for secrecy in the isolation of their mountainous abode, his voice dropped lower. "We will not fight them, but we will not allow them to pass safely either. Listen to me, and follow my plan."
He had started hatching this idea almost as soon as Skagos had first come to him with the news. "We will need to fly ahead of the herd," he said, mind distant and focused on their objective. "With enough preparation, all their numbers will mean nothing." An icy wind blew, stirring the frost that hung heavy on his mane.
"The winds of winter will freeze them to the bone. None will depart the mountains alive."
