It wasn't like the cave was filthy or anything, really but lately Deepali had been seriously antsy about something. She wasn't feeling right. She'd been tired lately and she had a feeling, an inkling in the back of her mind what it was. Yet she wasn't willing to even really play with that idea because it meant her life was going to be painfully short, or it would be normal and just painful. Lions died of the sickness every day and she knew the signs. She knew them so well and yet she didn't want to tell anyone about it. Not even Mel. Especially not Mel.

So she forced herself out of bed and actually started cleaning the den. She was getting old bones and bedding out, getting new things, all while her mate was off doing Mel type things. Her energy levels were draining fast, but she was really trying her hardest to act like everything was fine.

"Mel-type things", such as they were, usually revolved around plants and turning plants into medicines to help the Healers. The orange lion was, in fact, one of the more knowledgeable Apothecaries when it came to the various uses of herbs and roots. He might not be the best at cultivating or finding them, but he had a wide range of knowledge.

Not that it was ever enough. There were always new plants to find, somewhere out there in the world. The lion was getting a little antsy lately, wanting to go out and find more to add to his store of knowledge and the carefully tended garden of the Kitwana'antara. He hadn't breathed a word of this to his mate, however. Deepali was a more fragile lion, and while he wasn't sure if the disease had set in on her, he was quite certain that while he might be able to get permission - and an escort - to leave the pride again, Deepali surely wouldn't.

Such was the way of the world. The plague was theirs, and it was their responsibility to keep it confined. Still, there was no need to dwell on such depressing thoughts when he was able to return home to the most wonderful lioness in the den they shared.

"Bright the day, and thy eyes!" Mel warbled off-key as he strolled in to the den.

Warbling caught her attention and she looked towards the voice and laughed at her mate, shaking her head lightly. He was a silly person. Super silly, but it brightened her day and made her feel a lot better. Her tail flicked beside her as she settled into a sitting position and hummed softly.

"Well good day to you too, Mel." Grinning lightly, she finally moved over to headbutt him in affection and nuzzled under his chin. There was a lot of effort in walking when she was so tired, but by the gods she was going to act like she was perfectly fine, like when she was a cub. Grinning a bit, she shoved a paw to his chest and then scratched claws through his mane, not aiming to hurt him. "I've dragged new bedding in!"

Dark eyes blinked in surprise as he surveyed their home. There was new bedding, there was less mess, things had been tidied or removed altogether...it almost looked like a new den.

"Well, that you have! What's the occasion?" the male asked, cocking his head at Deepali. It wasn't that often that she embarked on such a cleaning, and most of the time she asked (demanded) his help in moving things around. Mel had no problem with that, given that he lived here too and there were no slaves in the Kitwana'antara and, more importantly, because she was his beloved mate and he'd happily do what she asked.

"Well, there's no ..reason. Other than I was tired of the clutter and it seemed like a good day to do it." She pawed a little more at him and just tried to play like she used to when she was a cub. She remembered playing with him a few times before she's grown up. Sure there was an age difference, but she didn't much mind it! He was still able to keep up with her and honestly? She felt a lot older than she was most days.

In something similar to a prance, she moved out and showed him how she cleaned up his area for his plants. She didn't move much honestly, because she didn't know what was usable and what wasn't, but still. She spruced up and went and got a few herbs he looked low on from the other apothecaries. "Here! I did things for you."

He couldn't help chuckling - not just at the antics she'd mimicked from her cubhood, but also at how eager she was to help, even if she was a bit cautious of his mess of plants. It was organized...somewhat. If by "organized" one meant that only Mel could figure out what was what was where.

"My thanks," he told Deepali, turning to smile at her. Some days, like today, he still couldn't quite believe that they were here, mated, together for all their lives. It was like the fairy story ending that Mel hadn't quite thought he would ever get, which made it all the more special that it was real.

"So I guess that mean's it my turn to do something for you, hmm? Find some dinner, maybe?" He leaned in and nibbled on her ear mischeviously.

"Oooh, can you do that? You've been so busy with your plants, maybe your forgot how to hunt." She was clearly teasing him. Deepali returned nibble for nibble before she gave him a little wink before she laughed and pranced around. It stopped eventually, leaving her yawning and drooped a little, but still in good spirits.

"Don't worry. I'm not very hungry right now. And anyway. ....Have... you given any thoughts at all tooo, I don't know, cubs?"
PostPosted: Mon Oct 27, 2014 5:40 pm
"Of course I have!" Mel agreed cheerily. "That's why my plan was to go see what the real Hunters have brought in!" In truth, it was just common sense. The Hunters always brought in meat for those who couldn't hunt for themselves or who were too valuable to risk on something as simple as a hunt. The orange lion was one of the latter, especially in a pride like this, that valued any and all medical knowledge.

He was a little surprised by the turn that the conversation took after that. They hadn't had cubs previously because Mel hadn't been certain Deepali was up to the task, especially given how young she was when they first became mates. He hadn't wanted to force anything on her that she wasn't ready for, and so had let sleeping lions lie concerning cubs.

The male nuzzled his mate wordlessly before stretching out his neck to rest his head on her shoulder.

"Nothing would give me more joy than to raise children with you," he breathed at last, eyes closed as he spoke words he'd never thought he'd be able to say.

The teasing didn't go unnoticed by him, and honestly, Deepali was glad for it. Grinning to herself before shifting to nuzzle against him when he started it up, the brown lioness purred slowly, deep in her throat and just leaned against him slowly. It was a good thing Mel was her mate. She had a feeling not every male was as considerate and understanding as he was.

She was young, very young still, but she was old enough to know she wanted to be a mom. She saw mother with their cubs and that's what she wanted. Playing with them, teaching them how to hunt, watching them grow. That seemed good for her.

"Well, good, because, I think I may be ready to have them." She turned her head to groom his mane and shoulder as she could, tail flicking quiet happily.

"That sounds good to me," Mel replied agreeably, nuzzling her back as he savored the thought. The orange lion pulled back a bit so that he could look Deepali in the eye as he grinned.

"Well, since you're not that hungry, and we have a wonderfully clean den...how about we go about getting some cubs then?" he suggested with a wink.

Dinner could wait. Quite a while.
