This month, if during a pass, Weyrlings will undertake their first threadfalls - something which will hopefully not bring on too many casualties. They will fly at the very bottom of the fall, and will be heavily monitored. They will also begin to undertake some lower-risk policing missions.

Today’s fall was a - relatively - easy one, as the edge of the fall hit the beaches of Tillek. The wind was fairly low, and there were no tricky conditions like falling snow or fog to deal with. Better yet, the fact that there was still snow on the ground means that the threat of thread hitting the ground was diminished… not that the Lady Holder wouldn’t be sending out ground crews after the all-clear was signalled. Even one burrow establishing itself was one too many.

It was also, significantly, the first fall that High Reaches’ older Weyrling class would be flying. B’tes had brought them all together before taking them up, and had a good half-hour of lecture in him. Well, after ensuring that every Weyrling had checked their straps, their firestone, everything that was with them.

“What I want to impress on all of you” he said finally, “is that I want you all to have a position in your head to between to above the Weyr at all times. You get hit? You go. You think you might get hit? You go. No-one plays at being a hero genius threadfighter. We shouldn’t get it bad, but if we do, I pull you all out. Stick to formation and listen to Sekimith and you will all be just fine. Everyone ready? We’re going up”

Dice roll prompts - Weyrling

1. Uh oh: Is that a ship down there? That’s definitely a fishing vessel - out in the middle of a fall! (does no one check the tables? has it been blown way off course? WHO GOES OUT ON A FISHING BOAT IN THE MIDDLE OF WINTER?) You and a friend are detailed to peel off and begin an immediate evacuation of the little craft.
2. On your left: A clump falls past you down towards the snowy ground…
3. [Optional] You’re hit: Either you or your dragon takes some threadscore damage.
4. Don’t Be A Hero Kid: One of your classmate’s dragons is scored, and they seem to be panicking! Can you do anything to help? And should you?
5. Hero Worship: One of First Wing’s riders snaps in briefly next to you to thumbs-up and tell you that you’re doing a great job, before flicking away between

Dice roll prompts - Rider

1. Burn Baby Burn: You are so good. So very good. You char a clump of thread out of the way with very little effort, your drills really paying off.
2. [optional] She shoots, she scores: You get a serious threadscore. Jump between now!
3. A last dance?: One of your wingmates is too slow. You’re… not certain, but… they might’ve just gone between for the last time. Or not? There’s no way of being sure right now - for all you know, they’re going to get medical treatment. The weyr’s healers are pretty good.
4. Run for cover!: On the road below, you’re just over a covered rest-station. It looks like a group of traders have just made it in there in time, because you see them pulling a panicking runner in just before the leading edge of the fall hits.
5. Holdless and Friendless: You can see the remains of what looks like a holdless settlement - or would’ve been, a few turns before. They’ve either retreated to some more holdable caves, or… well, the alternative is pretty nasty to think about.

Another day another fall.

Malcarreth wove through the silver strands as quick as a pickpocket through a crowd with the guards cries ringing in their ears. he commented as he seared a tangle of thread out of the air.

C'tis replied, checking the formation of his wing and the positions of the other wings as Malcarreth took out another clump.
Malcarreth continued the thought, his mind closer than usual to his rider as they focused on the business of not dying.

After the check of the straps and the firestone and nearly everything else, Brishen was a bit uneasy about flying, in thread. Not that it wasn’t sort of scary beforehand because it was thread and THREAD ATE THINGS. B’tes continued half hour lecture though and continuing check left an uneasy feeling in his gut. Hazmath on the other hand.

The blue sang out, lazily coasting the thermals in formation to save energy. The blue chimmed cheerfully because he was helping! And sent the image that his rider had drilled him to remember.

Brishen questioned, craning to get a good view and attempting to see who had been scored.

Hazmath replied hoping that their fellow would stop flailing about soon. It was sort of scary.

Pycath blinked between to evade a clump of Thread he didn't have the stone to flame at that moment, coming back out in neat formation with his wing. As he got his bearings again some barely noticeable features down on the ground caught his rider's attention.

she expressed needlessly as she passed more firestone to her dragon. People, people like she and her family had once been. If she'd met them back then she'd have cut their throats as soon as they'd have cut her's - they weren't her family after all - and these days of course she should probably be pondering whether or not to arrest them but here and now while she was trying not to be eaten alive herself she wished them well.

Pycath replied as he gluped down the firestone and flamed once more.

Re'ka shrugged and lent low over her dragon's neck. It was a passing thought, no more, and she had her own skin and her dragon's hide to think about.

Zaqueth seared away a clump of thread, banked, and burned another to ashes before taking more firestone from S'ol. Any Threadfall commanded their full attention of course but today the pair were more on edge than usual; the conditions were fair but the first Fall of a Weyrling class was nerve wracking to say the least, and this was only the forth class of youngsters to go through the great trial. So far as they could tell none had fallen yet but they weren't far into the fall yet and every second posed a risk, not a large risk but a risk all the same.

Zaqueth said firmly to his rider as he flamed once more.

S'ol nodded, there was no time for more acknowledgement than that.

It was finally happening, and Zareen was nervous. She knew, intellectually, that they were prepared for this, that the weyr wouldn't take chances with the weyrlings. This should be the ideal thread day to start on, low wind, no tricky conditions, possibly the best sort of combination that they could have gotten, but Zareen knew that that didn't necessarily make it an easy fall.

Easier yes, but fall should never be easy. That would only lead to mistakes.

Her straps checked out fine, and so did the others, and thankfully enough, the lecture gave her a chance to settle. She was still nervous, but it was a more practical sort, more about the fact that Zyxth could be injured during this than about the fall itself. They were as ready as they would ever be.

The bronze remarked. Zyxth was right, there was nothing to worry about. Thread would fall as it would, and they would be there to flame it. They rose with the rest as they were given the signal, taking their place in formation. They watched together as thread fell, flaming those that came close.

Another of the weyrlings sent, drawing the pair's attention to a stray clump that was falling towards the ground.

Zyxth sent back, diving down. It was in their range, and it would be better if it was gotten before it hit the ground. He got close, and then shot a stream of flame at it, incinerating the clump. Not bad, but he could do better. Would do better. He glanced around to make sure that there was no more, and then returned to their position. There was more thread to watch for.
