PRP between Tortured Pumpkin's Nadezhda and Novablu's Brishen

He stood at the very edge of the field, which was at the very edge of the herd territory he’d once belonged to. Once upon a time, when he didn’t even want to be there…and now that it was gone, he wished he would’ve done things differently. Seen things differently. Been a little nicer, been a little softer, been a better father. Yeah, he really regretted that one. As the wind blew across the field, ashes still lingering on the breeze, his black mane was tossed over his neck, long bangs shielding his face, but he paid it no mind.

It was too late for his beautiful, gentle Nuri, too late for his good-hearted daughter Lyuba. They were gone, taken by the flood that had washed through their home. Their lives no longer hung in the balance, but their souls had long-since travelled to the other side, a place he hoped was beautiful…

Brishen dropped his head, blowing out a breath. But his life had been spared--and alongside him, his independent daughter Nadya--they’d never truly seen eye to eye, but…she was all he had left and it hurt, physically hurt him, when he thought of losing her, too.

Funny how, once upon a time, he was a callous rogue who preferred the loner life and now that that was given back to him--no strings attached anymore, he was free to go--he couldn’t even imagine it.

Nadezhda sighed as she peered across the field, making sure her father was still in sight. She didn't understand why he'd decided to come back to this place. He had no ties here, no friends, nobody he cared about. Hell, he didn't even want to be here when there was a reason to be. She frowned a bit, watching him in the distance. What was he up to?

The smell of ash made her stomach churn, and she couldn't help but think of what she'd seen. The destruction. The death. Lyuba. Her eyes watered and her heart sank at the thought of her beloved sister's eyes just staring into the distance, void of life. She was overcome with guilt at the fact that she hadn't even done anything to hide the body from scavengers. She just... Left. Like a coward. She trembled and choked back tears at the thought of how careless she had been through all of this.

This place brought back memories, and the flood of emotion nearly overcame her. Suddenly, she called out to Brishen. "Father!" Nadya made her way toward the stallion, her head held high and her eyes dryer than they had been for days. She certainly put on a good show. "Father, is there anything we needed here? We really ought to get going. Who knows what could happen next. Everything could flood again. We should get to higher ground."

As his daughter trotted up to him, Brishen turned his face away from the sight of his past, mane swirling in the wind. He looked, in that moment, time-worn and weary, the sufferer of a great loss--they both did, they both were--but they had each other and that had to be enough.

He gave a soft nicker and nodded. She was so strong, his Nadya; wearing a perfect porcelain mask of strength, showing more control than he felt he had himself. But at her words, he knew she was right. There was nothing left for them here but danger.

In his mane hung a lock of Nuri's chestnut hair--so he would always have her with him. "I have everything. You're right, we should go." But go where? Still, he couldn't falter. He was stronger than this. He'd always been a tough stallion...so pull it together and be strong, if not for you then for your daughter.

He brushed his muzzle against her flank, gave one last look to the place of their now-past, and began towards the future.

She couldn't keep her eyes off him. His weathered appearance was something so new to her. If anything, her father had always kept up appearances. But he had changed. She was certain of it. Her eyes flitted toward the lock of hair neatly tied into his, surrounded by a turquoise band to hold it tight. She felt a pang of heartbreak just at the sight of it, and greatly wished for her father to be rid of it, though she knew that would not happen. Now, it was his only tie to Nuri. Other than Nadya herself, of course.

As he began to move, she surveyed the area. It mostly consisted of once-dense forest, which was now considerably thinner and scorched. The ground was a slop of ashy mud which she hoped would be nutrient-rich to aid the trees which were still clinging to life, if just barely. She allowed a sigh as she made her way behind him, trying to imagine what had become of her friends from the herd that once thrived here.

"Father, have you been to the mountains? You know. Before us? When you still roamed free. I feel like the mountains would be a good idea, but I've never been. Or I've heard stories of a great desert. A place where it never floods and there are no trees to catch fire. Is that true? Is there really a place like that?" She appeared hopeful. Nadya would rather the scorching heat of a barren wasteland than the possibility of what she'd seen happening all over.

Brishen flinched inwardly at the look on his daughter's face when she caught sight of the lock of Nuri's hair twined with his. His ears flicked back, gaze flicking away--sadness and guilt in his every feature--before he looked back to her. As sappy as it sounded, he needed this right now, the last clipping of her hair, so soft and silken as it brushed against his neck. He needed it just to make it through the days, but there would be a day that he laid it to rest. There would be a day that he'd say goodbye to Nuri and Lyuba for good, to move on...

But today, today was not that day. Hearing his daughter's hoofsteps behind him, he was comforted and they began to walk. The sooner they were out of this place, the better off they'd be--mentally anyway. And at her voice, Brishen swung his head to greet her. "The desert is rather bland. Scorching hot and never enough water and those damn oasises..." He shook his head. "We're not used to the heat--I think the mountains would be a better choice," he said. "I've been once."

Truthfully, he'd been born in the mountain ranges--and then abandoned there as well. But he was an adult, far from alone, and the mountains were beautiful and lush and cool. And honestly, anything would be better than scorched earth and swirling ash. "Let's head for the mountains. I think you'd find them gorgeous," he said with a smile.
