“Leilani wake up!” Pipaluk nuzzled her friend. She couldn’t believe that Leilani was asleep at such an important time. They had already planned it all out but then she had to go and actually fall asleep. They were only supposed to pretend to be asleep so that they didn’t get caught. They had to sneak out if they wanted to catch the monster. There were lots of monsters hiding behind that waterfall and they had to catch them in order to protect their tribe.

“The monsters are going to get us if we don’t hurry!” She said pretending to be scared.

She gasped pretending she just realised something extremely important. “Do you think there are monsters in the forest as well!”

A grin was planted on her face. ”They must be wanting to ambush us…oh no!” Leilani finally opened her eyes looking a little unimpressed at her friend. Pipaluk let out a giggle.

“Your finally awake!” She yelled overly loud.

"Quiet Pipa..." Leilani covered her ears with her paws. Why was Pipa being so noisy and talking about scary monsters again? She could talk about monsters in the morning when Leilani didn't feel like she was going to get eaten by one.

"Why would monsters be in the forest? The forest is too scary at night to go into." She then realized what she said and with a yawn rose from the little nest of grass she had made for herself. Parked right next to a tree she and Pipaluk curled up into little balls of fluff next to the stump. Together sleeping was easier because they were nice and warm, apart the grass was cold and ground hard to sleep on. At least when they slept next to each other they had the comfort of warmth and reassured security of one another's safety.

"Let's just patrol this area." She said to Pipaluk, knowing full well they were likely to get lost in the forest if they entered it again. Even if it had been her idea at first. "If we see a monster we can eat it then. But the forest is waaay too scary!"

Pipaluk just sighed knowing very well that Leilani never got her way. It was already certain that they were going to go into the forest the minute Pipaluk mentioned it. She was more of the leader of their small group or as they liked to call it family. ”Please you know it will be fun.” She used her puppy dog eyes. Every time she used them on Leilani she always got what she wanted.

Even though Leilani was scared Pipa knew that nothing would happen to them. In the back of her head she already knew that there were no monsters, but she felt as if she had to fight against something. What was the harm in just pretending? Unless there was real monsters. That couldn’t be true though…right? Pipaluk thought to herself.

She looked over to the forest watching the trees being blown all around; the restless wind attacking them. ”If we don’t go the wind monster will get everyone!” She said with a gasp of concern. ”That umm…” She was trying to think of what monster it should be that they are going to hunt down. ”Dragon is going to get everyone, but not if we can help it!” She said with a smile. ”What do you say?”

"Do dragons eat people?" Leilani asked with concern in her eyes. She had a thing with eat or be eaten, and with Pipaluk around to confirm her suspicions of monsters waiting around every single corner nothing could prevent her from asking.

She wrestled around her mind the idea of going off really late at night to hunt down a dragon. What did dragons look like anyways? Were they big bugs? Some bugs as Leilani had found out prior to meeting Pipaluk, were actually pretty tasty! It was all a matter of catching them and the like. If you couldn't catch the bugs then you couldn't eat and then it was another day of suffering hunger. "Are wind monsters and dragons the same?" She asked with another yawn, rolling over onto her spotted back this time so she could stretch out her sore muscles.

Standing, Leilani looked around with narrow eyes, observing her surroundings with flattened ears in an effort to appear invisible as she tried to see the wind-monster-dragon-thing. "Hmm...." She began speculating, she wanted to stay in this area going to the forest was too much work! "Let's follow the glitterbugs." She suggested, pointing her right paw to a firefly as it prepared to take off.

“Hmm well I think that the wind monster and dragon are the same thing.” She gave the look she always had when she was trying to come up with a story.

”I think the dragon is broken.” Pipaluk just avoided the topic of catching the glitter bugs. Leilani couldn’t distract her from her goal no matter what. ”He can’t breathe fire only wind.” She noticed that fog began to arise from the forest. ”And smoke.” She motioned for Leilani to look over at the forest.

”I think he needs help.” Her plan was beginning to change a bit from the original one of capturing the monster. ”Not all monsters are bad.” She looked down at the ground before turning to the forest. ”We have to help him no matter what!” For once instead of chasing after monsters they were going to help one.

Leilani wasn't exactly thrilled by helping a terrifying monster who could eat her in one bite; buuuuut. "Fine, I guess I'll help..." She huffed out with a pout. The small tanned cheetah began following her hyena companion as she deducted they needed to go far away from the pride's core and deep into the uncharted territory of a forest. They didn't even know where they were going in the forest. Once they reached the forest that was. Currently fireflies still danced at their heels as they trampled along the tall, dry grass surrounding them.

Why in the gods sweet names they decided to make their home nearest to the border would forever puzzle Leilani until the day she died.

She step foot in a stream of water that normally didn't exist at the border of the forest, but they often had to travel down a small slope in order to reach the edge of the forest. The slop was no bigger than a couple of feet at best, but to a cub who was no bigger than a lion's foot; it was an adventurously steep slop that warranted danger at any wrong step.

"Watch out!" Leilani called and ran to bump Pipaluk over and "save" her from whatever she thought was rustling in the grass. She kept her hyena friend pinned to the ground until a lizard crawled out of the shadows before flicking it's tail and scurrying away. "oops." She giggled.

Pipaluk got up with a smile on her face. ”Thank you for saving me those monsters are poisonous I almost forgot.” She side with her mouth open trying to act surprised. ”We must get the forest fast can’t you hear him crying for us to help.” She held her ear up higher into the ear showing that she heard the noise. ”He’s saying that we need to help him right now!” She began to run to the forest almost forgetting about the slope…in till she tumbled down it.

She rolled over after falling on the grass snout first. She looked up at Leilani and laughed. ”You better watch your step.” She said with a bright smile. She stood up unharmed with pieces of green grass standing out from her black fur. She got distracted from the fall and almost forgot her story so she changed it a bit. ”The dragon is being attacked by the poisonous monsters we have to get there quick!”

She sped up nearing the first tree of the forest. She looked back still waiting for Leilani to come down. ”Be careful.” She didn’t want Leilani to get hurt. Their adventures were fun but she never wanted anyone to get hurt. The slope they usually went down had more water around it them usual. It might have been a sign of something but children never really know that. A storm was slowly beginning to brew.

"P-poisonous?!" Just what lies was Pipa feeding her now? Leilani had never met a poisonous monster before. She had only met ones that were made of water and trees that had strangely shaped themselves to appear as if they were monsters of myths. Never had she found a poisonous one.

But Pipaluk was the best monster hunter she knew! (not to mention the only one), if Pipaluk said such thing as terrifying poisonous monsters existed you best your boxers Leilani believed it. "I- I don't know. Can't a dragon take care of itself? Do we really have to help it?" She could almost hear Pipaluk's response before she spoke it. "Of course!" to which Leilani muttered something before dragging herself over to the smaller hyena.

She had been growing faster recently. And since Pipaluk was a hyena she most certainly was smaller than Leilani, yet considerably more brave.

"Be careful." She heard Pipaluk say. "Y-yeah. I am!" She unsteadily spoke while trying to find her footing. Once they actually got to the forest, where exactly would they run off to then?

It took Pipaluk only a few seconds to realize that the sun was coming up which only meant one thing that there adventure would have to wait. They rarely got to finish any of their adventures because they had limited time. They would always spend the day after just mopping around.

Pipaluk was always more disappointed than Leilani though. Pipaluk always believed that someone would catch on that they were leaving every so often because they would always return half asleep. It hadn’t happened yet a though there were suspicions. Pipaluk had to think of a good reason why they had to return it wasn’t time for rational thinking.

”I think your right Leilani.” She decided to agree with her friend’s statement from before. ”The dragon can take care of himself he said we should save ourselves and he will hold them off.” Pipaluk decided that being able to talk to dragons was a power all great monster hunters should have so she claimed the skill as her own.

”He said we must make it back before sunrise because they become stronger in the daylight and would be too powerful for us.” Pipaluk was proud of the story it sounded like a great adventure that she could tell many about. ”Quick or it will be too late!” Pipaluk said beginning to run back. It wasn’t a lie though if they didn’t get back in time it would be too late. They would get in trouble. This was the most important part of their adventure the timing.

"I'm right?" She paused to relish in what her friend had told her. "I mean, uh, yeah, see I told you!" She proudly grinned in satisfaction. Then Pipaluk started running off.

"H-hey, wait up!" She called and stumbled to turn around and climb up the steep hill once again. Once she did indeed make it to the top however Leilani turned ever so slightly to look behind her at the ditch. "Good luck dragon." She said to it happily and set off once again to follow her ally.

She was proud, happy and feeling high with success. Not only was she a seasoned monster hunter but now she was aware of new monster type! "Poison huh." She said to herself quietly as she ran alongside Pipa.

Little did she know, but just then was the moment that would define her future, and a choice she would soon have to make. A player for sport and fun with her monster hunting skills coming into effect... Or a healer who would cure any illness her friends and family came to. Both sounded promising, it was just now up to Leilani to decide which one she preferred. Player or Healer?

the end.
