If you were flying above these ragged hills just outside the village, you would never know they contained the entrance to a vast underground cave network. Hidden below an overhang of mossy rock, a split in the stone just barely big enough for two Vlugzul side by side serves as the narrow passage into the Vlugzul Caverns. To get inside, a Vlugzul will land first on the hillside and then waddle in through the entrance into the dark cavern. About twelve paces in, the cave suddenly drops off, the floor giving way to open air - down which the Vlugzul will glide, navigating a short vertical gap and finally emerging into the huge main cavern.
There are many comfortable roosting places along the ceiling, and Vlugzul will often select a favorite rock formation to which they habitually cling. Different sections of the cavern are dedicated to different village factions – for example, breeders are roosted apart from the Vlugzul of warriors – and there are three smaller caverns below this one. The passageways to these caverns have been artificially widened over many generations by the village builders, which has provided access to more space in times of overflow and a way to segregate females in heat.
When a Vlugzul has been directed to where they will sleep, the goblin must then find a way down from the roof of the cavern and then back up and out into a village. To deal with this, a number of hanging wooden plank walkways have been constructed around where the roosts are, secured into the stone ceiling with sturdy iron rivets and very carefully maintained. To get up to these walkways from where their bat has roosted, a goblin will reach out for one of the dozens of rope ladders strategically placed around the roosting areas, and then carefully unbuckle their leather safety tether from the Vlugzul saddle and attach it to the ladder. Then they fully unbuckle themselves, climb onto the ladder, and begin the task of removing the riding harness from their upside-down Vlugzul while hanging on to the rope ladder. They then carry the riding gear up the ladder and along the plank pathway until they reach one of four transport baskets, which uses a system of weights and pulleys to slowly lower them and their gear down to the cavern floor.
The cavern floor itself is home to a dormitory, a gear storage room, a nursery, a cold pantry, a break room, a medical clinic, and a series of offices. These wooden buildings are mostly used by the Vlugzul breeders and trainers, but others are welcome if they have legitimate reasons to be there. For a goblin on foot to get to and from the entrance to the caverns from the floor, they must climb an incredibly long stairwell that was carved into a side wall and winds upwards for what seems like eternity. For heavy items and elderly goblins, there is another pulley basket that follows the same direct-drop route that the Vlugzul take when they fly in... but even some of the elders prefer the long set of stairs to the basket.
