RAT BIOLOGY
      ████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████

LIFESPAN & STAGES Rats have a three week gestation period (21 days realtime and ICly), in which the pregnant parent (or parents, or family members) build nests to house their children. They like to decorate them with a variety of objects, including cloth scraps, jewelry, gemstones and rocks, and flowers. Rats are more prone to building things to place on nests.

After they are born, the blind, deaf, hairless and helpless pups are carefully placed into the nests, where they stay and are cared for by parents and family until they are two weeks old (realtime and ICly), when their eyes open and they learn to walk. They cannot be RP'd very much at this stage, and are referred to as "nestlings". Only after their children leave the nest can a parent breed again.

After the two weeks are up, they become juveniles, and look very much like their adult counterparts, aside from their smaller, chubbier bodies. They are very curious and playful, and their personality and looks develop at this time. Their hair and clothes are generally much simpler than adult stage, and the time to get RP-eligible edits to their body is now. This stage lasts six weeks (real time and ICly), and many young rats decide around this time what they'd want to do for their future.

A little older than two months old, rats are considered adults. Now having all the natural edits and changes to their body that they will have (aside from RP edits or bonuses they may receive later), they are able to decide on a career path. However, they are not able to breed for at least one month after they are an adult. So three months ICly and realtime.

Rats in the real world only live 2-3 years, however in this advanced society, rats can live a very long time. Magical and scientific advancements now place a rat's lifespan from 30-50 years, though like all creatures, they are at the mercy of the gods for matters of war, predators and disease. You are free to kill off your characters at any age, but feel free to also have elderly rats who have lived a very long time as well.

GENERAL BIOLOGY Rats are omnivorous, and will eat anything and everything. They may eat whatever and however you like, from cooking their food to being nearly exclusive carnivorous to drinking alcoholic beverages. Usually, most rats get enough moisture from their food to not need to drink, but they can if they desire.

Rats have excellent hearing and smell, and not too stellar vision. Though colorblind in real life, in Panya's forest rats can see colors just as well as a human could, and most rats enjoy pleasing colors.

Rats are excellent swimmers and climbers, using their tails and dexterous hands to assist in everything they do. They have very strong teeth that are capable of chewing through almost anything.

FUR COLORS Rats (as well as mice) tend to be colored and patterned first and foremost the same as they do in life, with a wide variety of colors! White and black are popular fur colors, both as main fur colors and secondary ones, and nearly every color under a diluted spectrum is common. They can have any natural marking, and any unnatural marking so long as it could be seen as semi-natural (either to another animal, or loose shapes and such, and also swirls and stuff because I like them). Bright colors are allowed in smaller doses.

SOCIAL HIERARCHY
      ████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████

OLike with mice, inheritance in the rat kingdom goes to the eldest child, regardless of parentage. However, in cases of disputed inheritance, rats may engage in duel to determine who is more worthy of inheritance.

THE MONARCH At the top of the rat's social pyramid is the reigning regent, in this case - King Bubak. Although he is basically a figurehead king, he is still considered the most important rat, and he is the wealthiest. With him are his sons and his consort-wives and consort-husbands, who don't have any power, but are treated with respect.

THE PARLIAMENT The real source of power in the rat Kingdom, a council of twelve rats who take care of all the problems of the kingdom. They are rather loose and informal. Councilman Ornen is the leader of the parliament, and is considered to be like an adviser for King Bubak.

UPPER CLASS There are no lords, ladies or lieges in the rat Kingdom, as the regent is considered the sole owner of all the land. Instead, there are rats who are well-educated and wealthy (such as scientists, educators, merchants) who control a majority of the wealth in the kingdom, aside from the king or queen. These are the rats that become parliament members as well.

MIDDLE CLASS A majority of rats fall under this category. Includes shop-owners and craftspeople, and some merchants.

LOWER CLASS Rats who do not have much wealth. Mostly laborers and farmers, and the very poor.

EXILES, OUTCASTS & MUTANTS Criminals and rats who were exposed to experimentation....

RAT SCIENCE
      ████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████

O One of the key differences between mice and rats is that hundreds of years ago, rats discovered they could create things with their own paws, much like their gods once created their lives. They could create light and heat in the form of miniature suns, and they could create machines that made work easier for them. They even discovered they could change the way life works....

So while some rats are just as religious as the mice, many more are more invested in science, and want to dedicate their lives not to the gods, but to themselves. There are some who even go so far as to proclaim scientists as the true gods in quiet circles, and others who claim the sciences bring not blessed life, but monsters of machine and light.

There is no good comparison for where rats are in terms of scientific discoveries, but a steam-punk sort of Victorian times (late 1800s) is the best way to imagine it. They have light and electricity, but in somewhat rudimentary ways. They don't have television, internet or cars, but they do have radios. Most of their scientific research goes into biological studies - learning how to improve themselves though grafted parts and machinery.

THE ALLIANCE
      ████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████

O 15 years ago, King Krigen allied the mouse kingdom to the rat kingdom, and ceased their wars with each other. Before the alliance, rats tended to live underground on their continent, and would attack mouse ships and cities when they needed supplies. War was fought for centuries, and the alliance has ended the horrific fighting, and brings in a new era of peace and solidarity for rodents.

THE ALLIANCE The alliance's terms were as follows:
... The rats would cease fighting with the mice and become allies against predators.
... The mice would extend their guard to include rat cities and territory.
... The rat regent would have to be under rule of the mouse regent, though the rat regent would have full control of their own people and their lands.
... Mice and rats would agree to share supplies if it were requested of them.
... Rats would need to join the militia if it were requested of them in times of war.

O Now, rats can live in mice cities and more live in above-ground cities besides the two main ones - Castlecliff & Deer Hollow. However, due to some residual stigma, most rats still prefer to live in mainly rat territories. Rats are also sharing the technology with the mice, including the deerlings and body augmentation, for those that seek it.

GENERAL INFORMATION
      ████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████

O Not much here, but a general rule of thumb for the difference between mice and rats is that mice believe that the best thing they could be is beautiful and godly, where the rats believe the best thing you could be is strong and smart.
