One thing had become obvious over the past few months: Daenerys needed more warriors. She had no doubts of the skill or bravery of Roarke and the others, but they were simply spread too thin. As their herd grew, so too grew their need for protection. She spent many long evenings discussing how best to acquire more warriors for the herd with her followers to no great success. Most of the local soquili already had herds and loyalties, and would not be easily swayed to join her khalasar. She was not the only one after protection in this land of wolves and skinwalkers.

At the end of this brainstorming process, Daenerys had come to a decision. If she could not find enough warriors to join the khalasar freely, she would find ones that she could pay instead. Mercenary soquili were a rare breed and not easily found which is why she seized the opportunity when she heard of one nearby. She had heard local tales of a kalona soquili named Charon who would fight for pay. Though she was not certain what sort of payment he required, she imagined she could strike a deal. They could easily keep him fed if he wanted meat and they had extra trinkets if he valued human-made goods.

It was no secret that several of her followers had misgivings about hiring a kalona whose only loyalty was to payment. She had her own reservations as well, but sometimes imperfect solutions were required for urgent problems. There was no price that she wouldn't pay to keep her herd safe in the wilds and she would rather pay that price now than bargain uselessly with uncaring gods once one of her followers were slain.

He had come south with the herd of Kalona on their rampage. He had fought with them, and he had slain many as was his nature. He had been born for war and fighting. The scars on his back now had brothers, the marks of talons, hooves, and blades. In the end though, scars did not matter. They had still lost the war.

They had broken up into pieces and scattered across the Kawani lands to survive. Maybe there would come a time again when they would rise again with better plans to overcome the Kawani lands. This time they would not underestimate them, they would know who they were fighting so fiercely.

Since then, he had done odd jobs here and there as a mercenary. It was all he knew how to do. He was no herdsman, no grower or healer. He was the sword of death. It was not common for Soquili to travel down that path--so the job proved to be quite lucrative indeed.

The trinkets were buried away, enough to buy him the things he wanted. Perhaps, he had more than enough to live on for long months or years, but the urge to fight was too strong for him to rest. Instead, he kept to selling his skills. He liked the danger of it, how it called to him...

Charon was the name he had taken in the Kalona herd, his birth name lost from the tongues of others long ago. Ferryman they had called him, sender of souls. He had been delighted by it.

He had heard the whispers that someone was looking for him--a mare. It was why he waited here in the shelter of the trees for her to come. He knew that she would be close--sources had told him that. He would hear out what she wanted, though it really mattered little as long as he was paid.

There he was, standing underneath the trees. He was easy to find, at least. She strode over without hesitation, aware that any sort of hesitation might be viewed as a weakness to a predatory soquili like him. From his scars she could tell that he had been through many fights in his life. The fact that he'd survived so many injuries was a testament to his strength, strength that she was determined to bring back to the khalasar.

"You are Charon," she said, as a statement more so than a question. "I am Daenerys Targaryen, queen, and alpha of my herd." She used both the less familiar foreign title of 'queen' and the local title of 'alpha' now. "I seek to gain your service."

Charon appraised her with cool blue eyes. She had come to him alone--either brave or foolish, perhaps a bit of both. He liked the boldness of it. He waited for her to finish speaking before he began, "I am. But your station nor your 'divine right' mean anything to me." He looked her up and down again, "What do you mean to offer me, and what do you want me to do?"

He had heard of her. Charon could probably guess at what she wanted--protection. It was doubtful that she wanted anyone murdered or enslaved, she'd think it was beneath her more than likely. The thought made him laugh, like anything was beneath any being. He'd seen the dark side of love and the deadly side of noble or virtuous. She would, in the end, be no different.

Though Daenerys had come without another soquili, she was not alone. Her dragons flew above, far enough aloft to not be readily apparent but close enough to hear her if she called them to her aid. She had considered bringing along more guards but decided against it. She knew that it would be all too easy to minimize her importance if she was standing next to large and physically imposing stallions, especially to one such as this kalona that might have great respect for a fellow fighter. She wanted to meet him face to face and alone so that there could be no doubt in his mind as to whom he would answer to.

"I would like to hire you to be a guardian for my herd," she told him, ignoring the little barb about divine right. "As for payment, we have pieces of jewelry in precious metals, human coins, a few furs..." She watched him, critically. "What is it that you ask for?" Truthfully, she would be glad to be rid of some of it. The human coins were of little use for a soquili and had been a gift themselves. She suspected that the previous owner hadn't quite known what to do with them either.

She had ignored some of his more "free" phrasing. It proved that she at least was not arrogant, good. Arrogant employers were bothersome, seldom worth the effort of protecting them.

Quickly, Charon summed her up. Young, collected--probably too trusting but honest. Honest people were easier to work for though far less interesting. He listened to her offer, weighing out her words as much as her offering of goods.

"A good fight," he smiled wickedly as he looked at her. "I'll take what you offer, and you'll have my allegiance. As long as I'm paid, I'm yours." He glanced past her, looking around.

This place had been good to him, but it held no memories--no reason for staying. Far away his items, his wealth were stored away. He would likely never come back here.

His eyes turned back to hers, "And what enemies do you have Daenarys? Do you know them? Or are they only shadows to you still, unnamed?" It would help to know who the enemy was if she knew.

The way he phrased it troubled her, making her think of enemies following like shadows, hiding in the darkness and yet clinging to her every step. She thought herself far enough away from the Usurper's servants to be safe, but there was no way of telling.

"My enemies are across the sea," she said, hoping that it was true. "The herd has what enemies plague any soquili in these lands. We do not stay in one place for long and in our travels we have crossed through the territories of wolves and worse. Have you ever fought a skinwalker, Sir Kalona?" She asked her question in a lightly teasing tone, but it was a test all the same. She hoped never to achieve such proximity to a skinwalker again, but it was best to be prepared.

Charon took in her words. Enemies across the sea, but they would come more often than not. Enemies never stayed where you wanted them to. "And this herd of yours? Full of mares and foals? Or are there fighters too?Are there others protecting you too?" He needed to know what he was getting into.

When she asked her question, he thought of summer a year or two past, and the claw marks that raked his skin and that of his two companions. He nodded down to the claw mark on his chest--his oldest scar, "I have." He eyed her again, "I have heard things about you Mother of Dragons, are they true?"

This one was full of questions. It was cheeky, but boded well for him. Questions were a sign of intelligence, after all. She'd much rather have a clever mercenary than a dull one. "I can hardly tell you if something is true if I do not know what it is," she said, still smiling but with steel underneath her soft tones.

"It is true that I have hatched dragons and they follow my command, is that what you have heard?" She looked upwards as she said this, inviting him to follow her gaze to where Drogon circled overhead, a dark smear on the bright sky.

Charon followed her eyes to the sky. The dark black shaped mad lazy circles far above them--he could not tell quite how large, though he had heard that they were still small. This time, the rumours did seem to be true.

He glanced back at her, a small mare perhaps but she was shaping up to be something. There were whispers of her and they would become legend. He did not need the glory, he did not need the riches either--not really. There would be fighting though...and that, that he did enjoy.

"Shadows and whispers," he said as he looked back at her. "That's what I defend you against." A wicked smile broke over his face, "I like a challenge."

Daenerys felt a small thrill of triumph at his assent. She was certainly not so experienced yet that she took success for granted. This was in fact the first soquili that she had really gone out of her way to convince to join her khalasar, rather than simply extending the invitation. An upward quirk of her smile betrayed her briefly before she regained her composure.

"I am glad to see that we have an accord," she said. "How much time do you require to finish your affairs here? The herd can linger in one place, but we do not linger for long."

Charon looked around at the land that he'd stayed at for the past few months. He thought of the death of some of his friends, the breaking apart of the would be conquers. They had failed in that, and he had left that place behind. This place, it didn't matter. Or the place before. Or before. Not even home, which some put such stock in.

"I was only waiting for you here, I've been done here for days." He eyed the mare again, "I guess I should meet this herd of yours, and your dragons." His eyes drifted lazily back to the sky.

"The dragons first, then," said Dany, raising her voice to call them down. "Drogon! Viserion! Rhaegal!" Names held a special sort of power over dragons and hers shrieked and began to descend as soon as they heard theirs. Rhaegal and Viserion arrived first, settling on Daenerys' back and squabbling briefly for the choicest position. Drogon came last, gliding down with an air of regal composure. He was the largest and most magnificent of them all and Daenerys was filled with pride to see him displayed so well.

Drogon, seeing that there was no room for him upon his mother, landed on the ground with an aggravated snort. Immediately suspicious, he eyed Charon with mistrust. His black teeth showed through a half-open mouth, bright-eyes narrow.

Charon gazed at the creatures in wonder. It was one thing to hear tales of a dragon, but to see one was something. To see three....He could not help but be impressed with the creatures that landed before him. Green, Red, and a large black all summoned by one command of their name.

They were small now, though as large as a familiar easily. They would grow though until they was so small that he could walk down their throats. How long would that take? Days? Weeks? Years? Even centuries? He hoped to live to see it.

"Mother of dragons," he said it kindly. "You've earned something from me that many have not nor ever will, my respect." He looked on her with new eyes, this was going to be an adventure--the kind to pale all the other adventures he'd been on before.

Excellent.

"I am glad to have it," she said, head held high. She had her dragons to protect her, and now she had one more warrior as well. She didn't possess anything close to an army yet, but their numbers slowly grew. She still dreamed of the day when she might return to her ancestral homeland and wrench it from the control of those that had killed her family, but such was not yet to be. Yet.

She didn't know if her dragons would ever truly grow as large as the war monsters of old, but she did know that she could increase her powers in other ways. First she had to have enough warriors to protect her herd, and then, perhaps an army. Someday the realm would be hers. Today, this warrior was.

It was not a bad first step.
