In the beginning, there was Mkodi.

From the void, Mkodi drew forth all creation. The lands formed and the seas rose, and life came to the earth in the form of plants and soulless creatures. And it was good. But it was also boring, as Mkodi's creation was too perfect. The world existed in perfect harmony, each being taking only as much as it gave. And so, Mkodi created the thinking creatures of the world. First among those creations were the lions, the largest and most powerful of Her creatures.

But Mkodi's attempt to bring change to the world was too successful. These new creations spread across the land, upsetting the balance and threatening to run themselves out of existence. And so Mkodi turned to the spirits of the land itself, to the essence of Her creations. From this essence she brought forth the Gods, powerful caretakers of all creation. The first among these Gods were the most basic elements of creation: Life, Death, Time, Change, Chaos, and countless others. Many of these Gods were created in polar opposition to each other, like Life and Death.

These parent Gods spread across the lands, restoring Mkodi's creation to Her original purpose. And as they spread, so too did belief in their existence. The mortals looked upon the Gods with favour, worshipping them and beseeching them for aid. And from the belief and actions of the mortals, new Gods were born to these parent Gods. And so the domains of the Gods spread and diversified, from generation to generation.

Over time, Mkodi grew distant. The Gods, once bound to Her purpose, became free to act independently.


Gods - Organization
As the number of gods within the shop has increased, so has the need for a system to organize these gods. Additional gods are being created at an impressive rate, so this system is being implemented to minimize the potential problems in creating new domains. In general, domains within Shadows of Africa fall into one of three categories:

• Polar Domains
  In many cases a god will have a polar opposite domain (ie. War/Peace, Life/Death, Darkness/Light). No one god may have power over both aspects of a polar domain.
  
  
• Parent/Child domains
  Many gods are organized by 'parent' and 'child' domains; this term refers to the fact that in their original incarnations these gods were directly related. A parent domain encompasses the child domain(s) beneath it, giving that god broader powers that may overlap with the powers of the child domain(s). A child domain specializes in one aspect of the parent domain, giving them more specific powers.
  
  
• Overlapping Domains
  Some gods include aspects of two parent domains, have powers that may relate to both. These domains share influence with two (or more!) parent domains, but are not completely encompassed by either parent. In most cases these domains do not show any significant overlap with the 'parents' in terms of powers, as the fusion of multiple parent domains allows for a broad spectrum of new abilities.

Gods - Birth and Rebirth
The gods were originally created by Mkodi years and years ago, beyond the memory of any living mortal and many of the gods themselves. They have the benefit of living longer than any mortal creature and when they finally die, their soul is reborn - unlike a mortal's soul. In the beginning the souls of the gods were all new, but now they are all recycled in some way. Below are all the current ways a domain and/or soul are reborn and they are the only ways accepted by the shop at this time.

1. If a god dies and does not pass their domain on to a mortal (see rule 3) then they will be reborn as the same domain with the same soul, though they may look different. They may either be 'poofed' into existence in the god realm without any parents to speak of or the owner may arrange for them to be reborn as the cub of an existing god.

• To be eligible for a god rebirth, the existing god must have existed for one year and have at least 20 RPs
  
• If a god is reborn, they are no longer related to any of their previous family. None of their cubs, siblings, grandcubs, etc may use their new rebirthed god image in throwbacks - they may only use the old one.

2. If cubs are born to existing gods and the domains of these cubs never existed in the shop previously, they are simply considered to be domains that have just been reborn - not totally new domains/souls.

3. If a mortal died/is about to die a god may give up their domain to this mortal if they choose to do so (they may not be forced). The mortal will take over the domain and be reborn as a god either as a cub or adult. Their soul will be entered into the rebirth cycle until they choose to give the domain up to someone else. The previous god will be turned into a mortal of their previous stage (if they were an adol god they become an adol mortal) and will live out the rest of a mortal life, then die. They are no longer part of the rebirth cycle and their soul will be lost once they die.

• To be eligible for a mortal to god conversion, the mortal must have at least 10 RPs
  
• If you want to get the former god as a mortal, that must be obtained in a separate custom slot
  
• Mortals that die in pride plots as PART of the pride plot may not be reborn as a god
  
• If a mortal is reborn as a god they are no longer related to any of their previous family. None of their cubs, siblings, grandcubs, etc may use their new rebirthed god image in throwbacks - they may only use the old mortal one.

Choosing an Appropriate Domain
When choosing a domain, it is important to keep the setting of the shop in mind. SoAfrica is set approximately around the 1960s in undomesticated parts of Africa. While contact with humans and their technology is possible, it is very unlikely. As a result, there is little to no basis for belief in human concepts and creations. And without belief, there are no gods.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
Almost all of the higher-level 'badass' and 'evil' domains are covered, at this point in time. While you are still free to try for the 'lesser badass/evil' domains, we will be very picky about the approval of both domains and powers. If you are trying for a darker domain then we highly recommend that you send in both a detailed concept and powers - vague concepts/powers/domains will be rejected.

ALSO, PLEASE NOTE
Your domain must make sense to the average shop-goer. If someone has to ask a friend or dictionary.com what your domain means, then you are doing it wrong. Use the most common word for what you want. That is why we have a Goddess of Fire, and not a Goddess of Conflagration.

Things you should do

• Remember that a god is born from the belief of SoA, not humans, and choose your domain accordingly
  
• Remember that a god is the embodiment of their domain, and so their actions and appearance will reflect that
  
• Come up with a concept for the type of character you want, and think of a few key words that define them
  
• Check those key words and all their synonyms, to see if that god already exists
  
• Do all of that BEFORE you get really attached to your concept, because direct conflicts are not allowed!
  
• If some similar gods exist, then check out their powers and make sure that your concept can co-exist with them
  
• Post here to get your quest approved (as above) and start trying to bring your god to life
  
• Go ahead and chat up those god owners, to figure out your god's powers, plot potential relationships and future RP possibilities

Things you shouldn't do

• Get too attached to a concept/domain, since you can't reserve it and you can't blame anyone else for wanting it too
  
• Try to 'sneak' around a domain conflict by using a synonym (we'll notice!)
  
• Use overly-complicated words for your domain, or words with multiple meanings
  
• Quest for any domain that makes no sense within the setting (modern/foreign, too human-centric, not something a lion would care about, etc.)
  
• Try to scare people away from questing for the same domain as you (hey, all's fair in love and war!)

Domain Interactions
The gods were created from a world that relies on the interaction of all things within it. Their domains, in turn, reflect this interaction. No one domain exists in complete solitude; all aspects of the gods show some form of overlap with each other. This integrated nature of the gods and their domains can be confusing at times, especially when trying to come up with a unique domain for a god quest. The diagrams below illustrate some of the more common types of domain interactions that exist.


Polar Gods
These domains have a strong polar aspect, and exist in opposition with each other. Life and Death, Good and Evil - neither can exist without their opposite, and no one God can have powers that encompass both domains. Polarity among the domains is most pronounced and common among the 'older' gods, but is still seen in the younger generations (ie. Patience/Impatience). In most cases, if a domain appears to encompass both sides of a polar aspect then it is the parent domain to two polar child domains (ie. Karma, which is the parent domain to Fortune and Misfortune).

Overlapping Gods
As the number of gods in the world increase, so too does the interactivity of their domains. Fire and Earth form Volcanoes and Desert. Death and Animals form Predators and the Hunt. It's inevitable that there will be some measure of overlap between domains: the key is to make sure that the overlap isn't excessive. The ultimate determinate of the degree of overlap is in the powers, as both domains should be able to easily have a full set of distinct powers. If it is difficult to think of three temporary and one permanent power that are not too similar to an existing god's powers, then the domain overlaps too closely and cannot be used.

Parent/Child Gods
In contrast to the overlapping domains, a parent/child domain interaction means that the child domain is completely encompassed by the parent. This does not mean that the parent can do everything the child can with the same strength, but rather that their powers (in a broad sense) can influence the child's more specific domain. A great example of this is Darkness and Shadows. All shadows are a part of darkness, and therefore fall under His influence - but if Darkness and Shadows were to go toe-to-toe in a shadow-controlling battle, Shadows would win. As with overlapping domains, it should be easy to think of a distinct set of powers for both the parent and the child.

Ineligible Overlapping Gods
While it is sometimes tempting to use a synonym to an existing domain and attempt to create something similar, that is not permitted. Nor are domains that fall too close to existing domains. These domains cannot co-exist as their powers would overlap too greatly. In some cases gods that appear to have a high degree of overlap will be created/permitted, especially in god breedings or twin customs. If that occurs, the staff will work with the owners to make sure that the distribution of powers is fair. Quests to create a god with a domain that overlaps too much with another existing domain will not be approved.

Ineligible Parent/Child Gods
In some cases, however, the parent domain is not large enough to support a child domain. Or perhaps the child domain that is desired is too large, and should be trimmed. In either situation, the domains cannot co-exist as their powers would overlap too greatly. Quests to create a domain that overlaps too much with its parent/child will not be approved UNLESS you own both the parent and child domains. We're not going to stop you if you want to overlap your own powers that much!

Powers
A god is often defined by their powers, and each god has powers that related to their domain: they are, in effect, living personifications of their domain. No god can have powers that fall outside their domain, aside from the powers common to all gods. Please see God Powers thread for a list of the existing gods' powers.

There are three types of powers among gods: Common powers, Temporary powers, and one Permanent power. Please note that you are not required to give your god any powers at all. If you do wish to RP them with temporary/permanent powers, however, they must be approved beforehand. This can be done by posting the powers in the god powers approval thread.

Common Powers:

• Flight (even gods without wings can fly)
  
• Teleportion (of self only)
  
• Shapeshifting and/or illusions (of self only)
  
• Longer lifespan than mortals
  
• Influencing offspring (masking of own traits ONLY, must make note on breeding form)

Temporary Powers:

• All gods can have up to 3 temporary god powers. The key difference between a temporary power and a permanent power is that the affected object/mortal will return to their original state, unchanged, after the effect of the power has worn off. Temporary powers have a fixed duration, and may last anywhere from a few seconds up to 3 days.

Permanent Power:

• Each god can have one 'long-term' power, which can leave a permanent effect on an object or mortal. While it doesn't necessarily have to affect another SoA's coloring/breeding/growth image, it certainly can! However, this power must fit the god's particular domain. IE, the goddess of birds could change someone into a bird, but it would make no sense for the god of water to do this. This power may be used once every two months, and can only be used with the permission of the affected SoA's owner. To use this power, the god owner must post in the God Used Powers thread, with the RP proof to back it up. It may be used on anyone, regardless of how you obtained your SoA.

Do not harass people about getting to use these powers. They will state in the God Approved Powers thread how they may be contacted.

NOTE: It is very important for a god's powers to match the domain. Requests for powers that fall outside that domain will be denied. Since the owner of a god can now only deny the creation of similar powers and not the domain itself, it is in the owner's best interest to get their powers approved and make certain that every aspect of their domain that they wish to keep exclusive is covered within those powers.

Affecting others with powers:

• A god's powers can affect any SoA, including other gods, but the other owner must give their consent. If you choose to have your SoA affected by a god's permanent power, keep in mind that it is permanent - getting a curse/blessing removed later can be very difficult! The original god won't necessarily be inclined or able to remove it, and finding another who can could be tricky; it is theoretically possible, however, if they have an appropriate domain/power.

Mortal forms:

• While all gods appear primarily as lions, and breed as lions - breeding with lions produces, of course, more lions, and breeding with other felines produces the corresponding hybrid - they may put on an illusion of being another species. These are referred to as 'mortal forms' and, for SoA species, you may custom an unlimited number of mortal forms for your god; however, they may only breed as one of them (in addition to lion). So while your god may be able to don the illusion of being a wild dog, a cheetah, and a ratel, you must choose one alternate they can produce purebreds of. Because gods have already produced a significant number of hybrids, we feel it would be too much of a retcon for them to be able to produce purebreds with every species.

Earning new powers:

• If you want your god to have additional powers beyond the default set, three temporary powers, and one permanent power, you can earn them through extensive RP. 15 complete RPs (following the same length rules as breeding RPs) will get you a new temporary power, of which you can acquire a maximum of two extra. 25 RPs will get you a new permanent power, of which you can acquire a maximum of one extra.

Important Notes for Creating Powers

• You are not allowed to state which gods can and can't break curses/blessings made by your god or goddess.
  
• If your god is changing an SoA's form (ie: changing a lion to a cheetah) it can only be to a set of lines that exists within the shop. That means a god could not change a lion into a frog, for instance. The owner of this SoA must also have ALREADY OBTAINED the new lineart via customs. The new image must be ready-to-go before the RP is complete.

Getting your God's Powers Approved
While approval means that you CAN obtain your god of ABC, it does not mean that your powers are approved. Your god will be unable to use their powers until you have sorted them out with owners of EFG and XYZ. God powers must be approved by all owners of overlapping gods, and then posted in the God Powers Agreement thread (coming soon!). If an agreement can NOT be reached between yourself and existing god owners then contact the SoA Gods mule for mediation.

Please DO NOT contact the other owners until you have your god's powers written up properly. Don't send a PM asking them to tell you what you're allowed to do, don't PM them with vague ideas, don't just PM to chat. If you want your powers to be approved by the other owners then you MUST provide them with the full set of powers - as if you are going to apply officially. They cannot be expected to approve or deny half-formed concepts. Also, try to be patient and avoid pestering other god owners unless you have actually won a slot / own the god with the powers you want to discuss. There are a lot of people questing, and existing god owners don't want to have to stress out about powers for a god that may never exist.

When contacting other owners about god powers for a god that has been obtained, please label your PM clearly. 'God Powers - (Your God's Domain)' is the accepted format. This may seem like an odd request, but it will make things easier for us in the event that we need to ask for proof (in the form of screenshots) that powers were discussed. If you have not heard from the other god owner for more than 1 week, please check your Outbox to see if the PM has been read. If it has been read then you may contact the SoA Gods mule for assistance. If the PM remains unread for more than 2 weeks, then contact the mule. In both cases we may decide to approve powers without the input of the other god owner, on their behalf.

NOTE: If you obtain a god, ignore this rule, and use any unapproved temporary or permanent god powers, then your god will be refunded and the domain AND pet will be returned to the shop, only to later be distributed in an event. Do NOT do this.

FAQs
Q: So why is it that the god of Happiness was just born? Are you saying that nobody believed in being happy until now?
A: Nope, not at all! With the exception of 'new' domains, it is assumed that all domains of the gods are already in existence. This means that the new goddess of Happiness is actually just the latest incarnation of that domain, and she does not remember previous lives.

Q: How do you explain the creation of 'new' domains through breedings?
A: While most gods are presumed to already exist, some of them would be newer than others. This is because it is belief that creates a god. The mortals would not have had a reason to believe in humans or technology or other such things until more recent times, so these gods may be in their first incarnation. Older concepts, like happiness, are reincarnated domains.

Q: If all gods are already in existence, then why do the domains of the children relate so strongly to the domains of the parents?
A: Related domains try to stay together, even across incarnations.

Q: What if I don't want my god to be related to another god with a similar domain?
A: That's fine, they don't have to be related now. They were related once, back when the gods were first created. But since reincarnation breaks those ties, your god is now as free from relatives as you want him/her to be.

Q: But I already have the God of ABC, and the God of XYZ would totally toe-step on his/her domain!
A: Domains can overlap to some extent (there are too many for them not to!), powers can not. If the powers of your God are completely in line with his/her domain, then there should be no potential for conflict. Exceptions can occur when one God is of a 'parent' domain; in this case you are expected to work out a reasonable compromise with the other owner. Remember: parent domains are broad in scope, while the child domains are more specific.

Q: I want my God to have powers that cover two sides of a polar aspect! Why can't I?
A: Would you think it fair for the God of Day to have powers over Night? How about Life over Death? It's unreasonable for one God to control both aspects - you will need to decide which aspect is more true to your God, and amend your powers/domain accordingly.

Q: What do I do if my domain has multiple and diverse aspects?
A: Simply put, you must choose the single aspect that best defines your god's powers. The goddess of Light, for example, could be related to all of brightness, weight, and amount. It would be unbalanced for one god to have influence over so many aspects, therefore Light must choose just one (usually the most obvious/common usage for that word).

Q: How do you decide if a domain overlaps or conflicts with an existing god?
A: In general, it is the powers that determine the degree of overlap. Most gods share some overlap, and that's totally okay IF the owners can come up with diverse powers. Domains only conflict if they are essentially the same thing OR it would be almost impossible to come up with a full set of non-conflicting powers. (ie. Fire and Flames, Ocean and Seas).

Q: Hey, what gives? I see an approved quest on the list there that totally conflicts with my pre-existing god!
A: In the case of a (perceived) direct conflict, it's likely that one of three things has occurred:
..1 - There isn't a conflict, because it is a polar domain to your god and your god cannot cover both aspects of a polar domain.
..2 - There is a conflict, but your god does not have an appropriate domain name listed and therefore we didn't consider him/her accordingly.
..3 - There's a higher degree of overlap than we thought, because you haven't posted your powers yet. Without posted powers we have to guess about what your god's focus is - so post your powers if you want to avoid this!
Whatever the case may be, if you have concerns about a quest that has been posted in this thread, whether or not it has already been approved, please PM the god mule. In many cases, it's unlikely that the quest will be denied entirely; instead, we will work with both parties to reach an agreeable compromise.

Q: Why are the staff approving/denying domains now?
A: Now that there are so many gods, an increasing number of domains are beginning to overlap. This makes it extremely difficult for questers to track down every potential related domain, contact the owners, get approval, sort out powers... and then they could apply for a custom and find out afterward that there was another domain that overlaps all along. This process is more streamlined, efficient, and fair.

Q: If the owner of an existing god can't deny a domain, why bother having the quester PM them at all?
A: Because the owner(s) can deny the powers. The powers of a god can't overlap, but the domains can. Domains with direct conflicts will be rejected by the staff, and domains with potential overlap will be approved. But powers will not be approved until the owners of those related domains are satisfied that there is no conflict or overlap. Besides, even if the powers won't conflict at all it's nice to take this as an opportunity to create plots between related characters!

Q: Do CC domains have to be PMed to the mule?
A: God colorist do not accept CC domains in their raffles where the owner has a design but asks the god colorist to pick a domain, for various reasons. So if you have a design but no domain, then yes, please PM it to the mule so we can help you figure out a domain BEFORE the raffle. You may choose to ask for a completely CC god (domain and design). Random children of x god are also alright.

Q: Why are you asking for a physical description and concept?
A: In cases where we may have to deny your quest because of a close overlap, having more information about what you're hoping for may help us suggest other domains that are appropriate for your god. We want to work with you.

Q: Why won't you let me quest for my domain without showing potential powers? Other people don't have to do that!
A: Domains with an elevated amount of overlap (or even the potential to conflict) require a bit more work on your part to be approved. For example, both Rivers and Streams could exist as separate gods, but since the basic elements are the same (running water, etc) it's especially important to consider the powers beforehand. If we feel that the domain you are asking for could pose a conflict with existing domains/powers, then you will have to revise some aspects of your quest before it can be approved.

Q: I was trying for a quest and I was told that I needed to do more work on the domain/powers, but I see that someone else got approved for that same quest!
A: They were obviously told the same thing you were, and did the work required to get approval. Give your concept a thorough looking-over, and try again!

Q: Why are some domains marked as Reserved, Problematic, or Unavailable?
A: Reserved domains are held for future events or other OOC reasons. Problematic domains are those which have been (or could be) approved, but will require a really good concept to fly because there's so much potential for over-strong/conflicting powers. You are welcome to try for these domains, but the chances of being approved are much more slim. Unavailable domains are simply unavailable (for IC and/or OOC reasons), and will never exist in SoA.

Q: I was questing for the God(dess) of ABC, and a colorist took it for a cub from a god breeding. What am I supposed to do now?
A: Unfortunately, with as many gods and quests as there are, this is unavoidable. If it happens to you, then you can PM the SoA Gods mule and we'll work with you to find a new domain to quest for.

Q: Why are some quests marked on the list as being 'exclusive' to that quester? It looks like the domain conflicts a lot with an existing god.
A: Quests are marked as 'exclusive' when they have been granted special permission to conflict. This happens most often when the quester owns the pre-existing domain, but can also happen with the permission of the owner (usually between close friends with plots in mind for the characters).

Q: Does this mean that I can contact the owner of the God of ABC, since my quest for the God of XYZ was rejected for conflicting with their god?
A: NO. Absolutely not. These 'exclusive' quests exist solely to accommodate pre-existing plots between friends (or self-RP plots). They are an exception to the rule, and are not approved lightly even in those circumstances. We will not be pleased if we find out that you've badgered an existing god owner to try to approve your conflicting domain.
