Vittoria yawned and curled herself up on the seat of the compartment, drawing her school robe over her like a blanket. She had been up for hours already, getting ready to head to the station and board the train bright and early. She could have saved herself some hours of sleep if she had bothered to pack in the week preceding the beginning of the year or even the night before, but of course she had not done that. Instead she had hastily packed all she could into her trunk that morning and made her father promise three times that he would send along anything she forgot.
And so it was she found herself saying her goodbyes to her mother and father and heading to the back of the train in a compartment she was sure would not fill up with too many people. Ordinarily she would be thrilled at the chance to socialize with as many children as possible - she had always been quite the social butterfly at her mundane school - particularly if it meant she had a chance to show off all she already knew of magic, but this morning all she wanted to do was sleep. She wanted to be well rested for when she arrived at school.

Pierre, being the show-offy type, insisted on running ahead of his parents to find Platform 9 3/4. He figured definitely between 9 and 10, and closer to 10. His father had told him he couldn't be afraid of getting through, otherwise it wouldn't work. Pierre looked behind him after arriving between platforms 9 and 10 to be sure he could see his parents. He made eye contact with his father and jogged right at the wall. Before he could close his eyes while bracing himself for impact, a busy wizarding conglomerate materialized before him. In a moment his mother and father were beside him, congratulating him for a job well done.
The family of three moved away from the entrance and toward the Hogwarts Express, Pierre's father loading his things onto the train. Pierre saw mothers and children crying, but his mother seemed strangely calm. She kissed him on the cheek whispering "Aurevoir, mon amour", his father ruffled his hair, wished him good luck, and Pierre scurried onto the train as the whistles began to blow. It all was happening rather fast and Pierre sort of wished he hadn't been in such a hurry before. He ran to the nearest empty compartment and shoved the window open, waving at his mother and father as the train lurched forward.
He screamed "Je t'aime! Je t'aime!" a few more times before his parents were finally out of sight and he sighed and climbed down from his seat.
Funnily enough upon returning to the ground he realized he wasn't alone, and suddenly felt quite embarrassed about all the yelling, and the fact that there were definitely tears drying on his cheeks.

It felt like she had only had her eyes closed for a moment (because she had) when she heard the sound of loud footsteps and the compartment door opening. Bother. She thought to herself and opened one eye to look. Near the window a blonde boy was yelling something she could not understand while jumping up and down and waving. She was still staring at him with one eye closed when he turned and finally seemed to notice her.
She grinned wide when she saw his cheeks flush with embarrassment and sat up straight, pulling the robe-blanket off of her to reveal that she had not yet changed out of her mundane clothing.
"Well, sit!" she said, motioning to the seat across from her.

Pierre, now standing awkwardly, blushing profusely, and quickly wiping his face, looked at the girl who had been in the compartment before him. She was petite, even for her age, her hair was jet black and her skin olive and recently tanned (at least to him, he was pretty fair). She wore interesting clothes that reminded Pierre of his visits to London with is parents. He sat and cleared his throat. She was grinning at him. He felt more embarrassed
"Hi, thanks," he said, looking down at the pile of things he had thrown onto the floor. "Uh, I'll just pick those up, sorry." And he stood again, picking up his things hastily and placing them above his seat before finally sitting to look at his new companion. "I'm Pierre, by the way."

Vittoria's smile did not leave her face. It was warm and genuine and though she was quite annoyed that she had not had any time to sleep, she liked this shy awkward boy and hoped to make a new friend. She was always making new friends, though they seldom stayed close.
"I'm Vittoria! You can call me Tori. Everyone does, except papà." She pulled a handful of candy from the pocket of her dress and offered him some. "Were those your parents you were calling to?"

Pierre, while not made uncomfortable by the presence of an unknown person, felt very nervous. Vittoria held out a handful of sweets, still smiling sweetly. She was rather cute, he thought to himself. Pierre didn't want to admit that he was desperately calling for his parents, but he supposed he couldn't lie. She was there to witness the whole thing after all.
"Yes, those were my parents," he smiled a little and took a treat, "You're the only person I've heard say papa in a long time. Besides myself anyway."

The more she spoke the more a subtle accent could be heard in her words. She looked at him appraisingly and cocked her head to the side. Then without any sort of segue she changed the subject. "Do you know any magic yet?"

"I only know a little," Pierre felt proud that he knew at least something more than the average eleven year old, but he didn't want to seem like he was bragging. "What about you?"

It seemed she clearly did mean to brag because she immediately began rummaging through the robe beside her and pulled out a wand, a lovely thing made of elder over a foot long - seemingly far too much wand for such a small person.

"Mine's rowan, coral core," The wand was 13 inches and dwarfed the boy. The two children looked sort of silly with their long wands. "My mother insisted, when I chose to come to Hogwarts, that I get my wand in Paris." He smiled, he was very proud of his wand and of his family, and of the magic he knew.

She beamed proudly at having such a fine wand. Her father had said it was a silly frivolous thing and showed her how to cast a few spells without one, but Ollivander had explained that magic came easier with a wand and would be easier to focus when she told him so. "Show me what you know, Pepe and I will show you a bit as well!"

"Show me what you know, Pepe and I will show you a bit as well!" Pierre felt nervous again. Whatever pride had filled him while looking at his wand and speaking of Paris had left him. This girl was not from England and wouldn't be in awe of his foreign wand. Her own wand was foreign to her! Not to mention she called him his mother's pet name for him. It was embarrassing! "Uhh, my pepere taught me a fun one this summer." Pierre got up and stood back, he aimed his wand at the sweets that had been left on the seat next to Vittoria. "Lévitez!" it was simple enough, the sweets lifted into the air and hovered for a bit. Pierre waved his wand toward the opposite side of the compartment and the sweets flew into the wall with a clatter. "I suppose I've got to watch how hard I toss things," he gave a nervous laugh and looked expectantly at Vittoria.

With a swish and a flick and a muttered word Vittoria made the candy float off the floor where it landed and returned it to the pile of sweets, cracked but still edible. "A good one, and very useful for cleaning your room if only they would let you practice at home," she frowned a bit. "Mamma says they do not mind too much before your first year because you don't know any better, but after that it is strictly forbidden. The holidays will be torture!" The girl looked truly distressed at the thought of not being able to practice magic during breaks, but she quickly shook it off and returned to smiling. She picked up the broken candy from the pile. "Watch this one! Riparare!" She tapped the candy gently twice and the crack sealed itself as though the candy had never shattered against the wall at all.
