Lazarus was lying lazily beneath the shade of a large tree, the forest at his back and the sun warming the air about him. It was not often that a soquili would lay so vulnerable, especially on a wide open meadow like the one he was in, but he trusted his mother’s watchful eyes and he wanted to be closer to her height, anyway. He knew she was somewhere around here and would come to him eventually. And maybe she would have an apple with her!
They rarely strayed far from one another, or perhaps it would be more accurate to say he never strayed far from her. He loved her company, and he would hate to lose her, too... No, that wouldn’t happen. She could protect herself well enough, just as she’d protected him all these years. But... how long had she been gone? Where was she?
“Mother?” he called, unable to help the quiver of fear that entered his voice.

Tallon had been grazing but keeping an eye on her adoptive son. She'd come across him when he was a foal, not newly emerged from his basket but still obviously needing a lot of care. She didn't really talk often about finding him but since he'd been old enough to know she'd told him about it, would answer whatever questions he had but for all intents and purposes he was her son and nothing was ever going to change that. She'd left him half dozing as she'd spied a very small grove of apples not far off, she knew he loved them but she didn't often surprise him with a treat since he stuck by her side all the time, she didn't mind that of course but sometimes it was nice to have even a little amount of alone time. Through all the years of caring for him she never once begrudged him if he wanted to cuddle up or if he wanted to just be close. She loved Lazarus as much as she would have done had he been her own flesh and blood. She'd gathered a good amount of apples before she heard Lazrarus calling, oh dear... seemed she'd moved out of his line of sight and he was getting worried "I'm here Lazarus dear" she called back to reassure him "Just coming now sweetie" She gathered the apples in the large leaf she'd found and made her way back to where she'd left the large Stallion.

Lazarus breathed a sigh of relief as soon as his mother replied, his body visibly relaxing. Though the teeth and bone-like markings on his pelt made him look fearsome, he was far from frightening, especially now when his eyes were so bright and his smile so wide at his mother’s approach.
“Are they for me?” he asked when he caught sight of the apples, already wriggling with anticipation. He reached out and timidly lipped at the closest one, eyes wide and pleading as he looked to her for permission.

It made Tallon's heart light to see Lazarus so obviously happy when he caught sight of her. She was so proud of him and no matter how much he grew or what his markings looked like, he was still her baby, nothing was going to change THAT fact.
Her mouth was full of the leaf she'd used to wrap the apples up but she gave him a hard stare when he lipped at some of the fruit, as if to remind him to wait a minute. Saying nothing she flicked her tail at him, gesturing he follow her as she moved towards the shade.
She put the apples down and smiled at her large son "Yes Laz, they're for you. My treat" she said kindly "though you really should wait next time love, you know i wouldn't leave you out" she mildly admonished him. "Sorry i worried you honey, i wanted to surprise you" she said, giving him a loving nuzzle.

Lazarus withdrew obediently, though he was not discouraged in the least. After all, she hadn’t exactly said no, and he hadn’t had much snacks recently enough for her to believe it’d be unhealthy for him to have more. At her urging, he rose readily to feet and rushed ahead of her, settling down in the larger shaded area with ill-concealed anticipation.
“Yes, mother,” he said automatically, but he returned the nuzzle fondly enough to let her know he would keep her words in mind and that he appreciated her efforts.
Though by now he’d technically reached the beginnings of adulthood, his unnaturally large mouth remained a source of childish delight for him, considering how it had been used to impress and shock his peers when he was younger. He’d picked up certain habits to accentuate it, one of the more unfortunate ones now being that he attempted to chew on two apples at once. Juice and small bits of fruit flew every which way while he, apparently, remained oblivious.

She loved it when he returned her nuzzles, was pleased he was an affectionate boy. Others she'd raised in the past hadn't always been though she knew they'd loved her but it was just nice to be shown the love. However when bits of apple and juice began to flick at her she had to shake it out of her pelt "Lazarus, remember your manners" she reminded him, though she wasn't annoyed, she enjoyed his youthful play, it made her feel glad and proud of him, her son in every way. "one at a time too" she added, taking her own apple up and taking a smallish bite before chewing carefully, making a point of eating with minimal mess.

Lazarus froze, his gaze dropping first to the mess that radiated from his mouth, and then to chunks dotting his mother’s hair. He smiled sheepishly, his eyes crinkling over the girth of the apples, and let one of the fruits drop to the floor. The other he deposited between his knees while he rolled his eyes at his mother’s display. When he thought she was watching, he assumed a dignified air and took the smallest, most delicate nibble he could muster. He managed it a few more times before he burst out laughing, and he stretched out his neck to give her another nuzzle.
He was willing to accommodate her request, especially now when he was in such good humor. The rest of the apples were finished with clean bites and no spills, and he picked at nearby flowers and dropped them at his mother’s side while he waited for her to complete her own meal.
“Are we going anywhere today?” he asked, looking hopeful. When she’d first found him, he could barely be pried off her side, much less their home. The former could still use some improvement, but when it came to the latter, well, it was very likely that he’d be a traveler, too, if he would only go off on his own.
