User ImageShe moved silently, not even the sound of crunching leaves and branches could be heard as the mare made her way through the forest. Several questions ran through her mind as each step she made brought her further and further away from the family she loved. Her brother, the one who looked more like her and her father had already taken leave. However there was two boys leaving one at home. So when she made her declaration of her own leave, there was hesitation and fear that lingered in the air. Nobis was their little girl for starters, and she was rather fond of being around her father. The other was the fear that one day the other mare would return, the one who claimed to own her mother. If she had any idea where he was or that she had even born children there would be trouble. If she ever found Nobis there was a good chance she would aim to capture her too and treat her like a bitter prisoner.

Despite all the thoughts she had yet to stop and turn around, even as the sun started to inch its way across the skyline. Its red , finger like limbs reaching out across the sky shoving out the familiar purples and dark blues of the night. Her tail curled around her leg as she paused for a moment her ears listening to a bird that started to sing a rather cheerful song.

It was early, with the last of the evenings stars still blinking bright over the land. Dawn was fast arriving, and it would sweep the last of the stars away in its embrace, and with it, would be the stirring of the world. Lothorien was not typically a creature of night, but often caught an early start. These lands were his home, and he served the woodlands well. While the small patch of territory was his own -- no other soquili resided within it, as far as he knew -- he took his duties seriously.

And why shouldn't he?

Though the lands were his own, he had an obligation to care for the birds, the racoons, the squirrels, rodents and even the hives of insects that colonized. Live and let live, so the saying went, and Lothorien wanted to make sure that at least his small territory was protected. Should his mother or sister ever come visit, should he ever harbor a guest, he wanted to make sure his lands were secure and safe. So while other stallions his age might romp around carelessly; Lothorien preferred to be prepared.

Gentle of spirit, softspoken, an admirer of nature, and incredibly dutybound, this particular stallion had known early on that he had the heart of a protector. It was his job when his father and brother had been whisked away, and though his mother had eventually found love anew, and his sister roamed and found her own way, despite her clumsy nature, Lothorien could not so easily shed his foalhood role.

No, he might only be protecting some plants and animals, but that was reason enough.

So it was, the stallion picked his way quietly through the dark, early-morning woodlands. He was on alert, instinct telling him that something was off this evening. There was an unfamiliar scent on the wind, and he was doing his best to track the source. It didn't smell like some sort of prey beast, but one could never be too sure. Unfortunately, his usual vigilant guards were asleep; and any bats that might know to rouse him, had also returned to their chosen abodes this close to dawn. Someone was out there, though, and Lothorien had made it his duty to find out who.

It was good that he was an early riser; good that he was up to investigate. So, hot on Nobis' trail, he quietly pursued.

Nobis was completely unaware of where she was however she knew that every step she took she was getting further and further away from what was familiar and silently moving into a world unknown. Every few steps she would pause to study her surroundings, the various trees and plants, even the birds she would have to remember each of them. If she couldn’t remember it would be harder to return home. It would be terrible if she could never make it home back to her family. Not to mention it would have meant she had failed everything her father had taught her about tracking and hunting. She did not require meat like her father in eating, she could eat it but she was not as fond of it as her father. What she did do was follow him every morning and learned everything she could from him. At first he had been reluctant in doing so but it didn’t stop her from following him every day.

Now it was a test, or at least a test in her own mind to prove to her family that she was more than capable of being on her own. Three cycles of the moon she had promised she would return for a short visit to let them know she was ok until then she had to see everything she could.

That included admiring the small birds that lingered in the trees singing as the sun rose, there was a good chance she was standing too long and studying. Too long to the extent that a new scent drifted in her nose, something unfamiliar and large. Her body froze, had they seen her?
