001. New Beginnings Maxwell

A figure sat upon the edge of a low roof top. The sun was beginning to set and the figure couldn't help but think about all the past things that have gone on in his life ever since he left home. A lot of it was bad, some of it was good. It had all started because he was forced to give up everything. If wiping the slate clean was always a willing act, the figure thought, then his concrete cracked slate had its face forcibly chopped off.

It was all over now, though. He didn't hold any grudges because bitter memories are now the bittersweet events that shaped him now. He couldn't think of threats, deaths, friends, or family, because now, his slate was really cleaned. He had absolutely no one. Nothing to look forward to.

Max stood, taking a step off the two story building. His body instinctively tucked into itself as he rolled out the impact, used to the many times he's had to make risky getaways. He was toughened toward the grit and gravel and just shook himself off before he continued to walk opposite the way of the setting sun over the shimmering waves.

He had been given his new beginning. One that he was willing to accept. A clean slate. This time around, he was going to make the best of it. He didn't want to waste the years left to live because he was all too aware of the cherished memories that life held, and how easily it could all be yanked away.

002. Cause/Effect Evangeline

Every cause gave way to an effect. Every action gave way to consequence. Every pleasure had a cost. Every mistake had a punishment. The short young woman was all too aware of that fact after the shock wore off. This outcome was not what she expected but now, after the fact, she felt guilty to think that her foster mother would treat her any differently.

As she somberly packed her suitcase, Eve flashed back to the events that caused her to leave all she had ever known. How she constantly acted like a spoilt brat for the attention of her kind mother. How she had developed a slight taste for alcohol and partying (the only thing that would take her away from her 'oh so important' teenaged problems). How she snuck out against her mother's wishes, and still continued to do so even after Eve discovered that her mother knew of her nightly escapades. Dating the roughest, toughest guy she could find; even if he made her slightly uncomfortable; even if her mother outright told Eve not to associate with the guy. Mostly though, how she managed to get knocked up, hiding the pregnancy as best she could.

Her mother didn't rage at the last fact, not like she usually did as with all her other confrontations. Her eyes were beyond cold. They were dead. She gave up on me... The thought circled through Eve's mind as she quickened her packing, willing the blurred vision to not slow her down. She thought about how her mother looked at her with those eyes after confronting her, shook her head, and told Eve that she had an hour to pack her things and leave the house.

She would take it all back if she knew this was going to be the effect.

003. Peace of Mind Oliver

He couldn't stand being alone, but it was better than being shipped off to a foster home. A few years ago, my father learned that he had contracted HIV and had also unknowingly given it to his mother. Daddy dearest just could not keep his legs crossed, he thought as he juggled the keys to his new house in his hands. He came from a wealthy family and, as it turned out, wealthy people do cause the best gossip. With no living relatives and his parents too far down the path of what has developed into AIDS, he had the choice of being put into the system, or becoming emancipated.

Oliver had always been independent anyway. He had a large trust fund which was accessible to him due to the delicate circumstances. He had a large inheritance. That I'll definitely be getting soon. Oliver found it easier to be mean about the situation and so he tended to act as if he resented his father and thought his of his mother as only one of his father's whores.

But he didn't have to act here. He didn't have to think. Oliver just had to survive the days in the large, almost mansion-like, house. Even with his pep talk, and the promise of peace of mind away from his life's problems, Oliver could only think about how big and empty the house was.

004. Childhood Memories Oliver

A little boy with light hazel-green eyes and sandy-colored blond hair looked questioningly between his caretaker and his father as the caretaker pulled him off with bullshit promises of play time and sweets if he was a good boy. Even at that young age, the boy knew that what his father was doing wasn't quite right. If his father loved his mother, and even kissed her sometimes, why would he go and kiss another woman? Why would he play 'married games'.

He remembered several months prior when he had walked in on his parents being very close with each other. The power had been knocked out by the thunderstorm that raged through the city at the time. It was glaringly obvious when his night light went out plunging his room into darkness, just as he was about to finally drift to sleep.

His parents probably had not known he was coming because they didn't have night lights, he reasoned, and that's why they quickly jumped away from each other when he burst in. His mother had told him that they were playing a secret game that was only for married couples. He would get to play these games too when he met a nice girl, his mother had told him.

So when he walked in after coming home earlier than expected (he had run into some trouble when he realized that he was no longer firmly seated on the swing, but soaring through the air. His hands and knees were scratched and he continued to cry until he was allowed to go home) he was shocked that his father was playing the same games with a woman that was not his mother.

"Cheater!" he had screamed. "You're a cheater!" He repeated this until his caretaker dragged him away. He didn't know why he yelled those words, but they seemed appropriate. He felt as cheated as when Sally-May had tried to convince him that rock beats paper, only for him to learn later that he really won that match and should have gotten the last jelly bean in the bag they were sharing. Yes, the feelings were very similar, except this time it was more intense. He could only think about his kind lovely mother and how bad being cheated on would feel like to her.

The caretaker had made him promise to never whisper a word of what I had witnessed, but Oliver had already promised himself the same. If only the little boy didn't have to lie to spare his mother's feelings. If only his father hadn't cheated in a game that even he knew was much greater than Rock-Paper-Scissors.

005. Speed [Sci-fi Collection]

I looked down at the people trying to get away from the disaster that was occuring around them. Some of them seemed to continuously twisted their upper torso to look back at the horror overtaking them. Why was it that humans were so fasinated with the bad things in life? It was obvious in the way that those uninvolved ran forward to see the grueling image, maybe even taking a few pictures, before fleeing. Many left others injured in favour of their own lives.

I narrowed my eyes at the display. That was why I hated humans, I thought. No matter the speen they ran at, nothing could save them. I pondered this a moment, thinking if I should act upon them with as much speed as they acted upon each other and upon the situation.

Rash decisions lead to bad consequences... I thought before I tapped into the communication system between me and the cause of the disaster. "Kill them. Kill them all." Poor humans, I thought, but it was more of a courtousy than anything filled with any real compassion.

006. Mayhem [Sci-fi Collection]

They were running around everywhere, attacking people, killing children. They things could not be more than a few inches above my calf but they were dangerous to people unlike me. To regular human, these things were deadly. Sharp jagged teeth, poisonous claws, strong legs easily able to jump onto the face of the tallest man in the world.

Yes, this was very bad. I knew that only I could stop them, for I had not met anyone like myself in such a long time. It was my fault and I was unsure if I could defeat them alone. Though my siblings had the bloodline, I would never subject them to this. I had a good feeling that I would be overwhelmed very soon. I had a good feeling that after that, all these innocent people would not last long. I had a good feeling that I was in s**t deeper than the pile I had just stepped in.

This wasn't good. It could not end like this. I can not lose to the mayhem.
