Appearance:

Height: Five feet, five inches

Nationality: British (With a Japanese heritage)
Appearance Description: Umi is short, thin and lightweight, lacking any major muscle definition on her "petite" body. Her hair color is cerulean, which was not natural in her life, but became so in her death, granting her a very recognizable appearance, usually accustomed with a stern gaze from her dark brown eyes. Her clothing makes her even easier to recognize, often wearing a white outfit in which she can nimbly move about with a scarf matching her hair color. However, the exposure it causes can sometimes result in bad situations for herself and other soldier ranked males. Despite this, she continues to wear it due to the ability to instantly mobilize with minimal restraint.

Personality: Umi is serious and somewhat stubborn to a fault. She tends not to laugh at jokes, smile often, or even show some human emotion beyond a smirk, a "Hmph", or critical looking eyes. However, she does talk more than her personality lets on, if only because she feels the need to explain things to those who are asking any given question. Being slightly more knowledgeable than an average soldier, she often finds herself giving advice to others of her rank. She tries her best not to give into remarks made against her, though this resolve falters from time to time, and a venomous, if not regretful, tongue lashing follows. Generally, her idea of a first impression is not to leave a good mark on the person, but rather to leave a mark that keeps them from bugging you again, coming off as cold and resentful like a winter rain or chilling wind. Rumors sometimes float around she is much nicer than this, but the summer shower of compliments never lasts as Umi makes it a point to keep her personal image of a cold hearted assassin. But through all this, Umi values love over anything else, a fault that brought about her current personality. She keeps herself distant so she cannot lose something valuable, and a search through her small personal library will reveal many romance novels that are well worn. Consequently, though she claims to have no interest in any form of a relationship past that of what is a "business" relationship, she is curious as to her own romantic tastes and if she finds herself utterly alone, makes note of them.

Background:
As a girl, Umi Rei Shiratori, was happy, cheerful, and just all around sunny, despite having an affinity for the rain that went past the childhood love of playing in the mud and just generally being dirty. Her life continued on this way into her teens. A sunny disposition and a decent head on her shoulders. She wasn't above helping other students no matter what. Even as she aged, her love for the rain never changed with her. She would often walk home and enter soaked to the bone in the warmer summer showers, much to the chagrin of her parents and brother. Because of this, as one could guess, she missed a sizable amount of school due to colds and other mild fevers. Still, her presence at school was always welcomed back and there was never a time she couldn't easily get notes or missed homework or help when she needed it. And on and on this life continued until the month after her eighteenth birthday. The sunny sky grew cloudy as a rain storm hovered in. Blissful that it was a summer rain, Umi did what she always did and got ready to feel the cold water hit her and make her feel refreshed. She had just recently dyed her hair for the same reason most teenage girls do it: because she could. And this said guy was also walking with her on her way from school to a nearby fast food place for a light dinner. They both stood at a cross walk, waiting for the light to change so they could cross safely when a nearby building detonated. This wasn't odd though. The building was being demolished to make way for a new office. The construction team could be heard shortly after the blast when everyone's ears stopped ringing. It was when the pedestrian light turned on, signalling them to cross that something odd happened. Umi crossed just fine, humming to herself and made it safely to the other side when she noticed her hopefully soon to be boyfriend had not. He was halfway across, holding his stomach, a red patch growing from his midriff and dripping down his shorts. He coughed once and hacked up a dark red blood onto the ground. He lifted up his hand, staring at it in disbelief, revealing a hole about the size of the end of a soup can clear through to the other side. Umi too was caught in this trance, tearing up as she began to scream, people noticing and calling for help. Some had the guts to run up and help him as he fell to his knees and began to cough up more blood. Umi found herself in shock, unable to move. Then, fate spat right in her face. As the people who grouped up to help her friend stand, a semi came by, brakes shot and ran down nearly a dozen people, splattering them against the pavement, chopping them into pieces with the force of the truck, or otherwise killing them before tumbling over into the construction zone and exploding, the crash rending open the gas line right onto the welding torch. Her tears stopped as the boy she fell for was torn apart even more by the devastating raw weight of the semi, his pieces scattered further by the shock wave of the explosion. Screaming, unable to cry, Umi ran as fast as she could in no discernible direction as the rain began to fall. She would be pronounced dead at the scene with no body found. People believed she had ran out to help the boy then was stuck to the grill by force, her body reduced to ash at the blast site.

Umi was found later under a bridge in a neighboring town. She had run off and taken a cab far into the countryside and simply stayed there. She was thinner by far, but the people took little pity on her, giving her scraps only when she wasn't looking because she seemed a little "off". When she was finally confirmed alive, the police, with her parents included, came to visit her and take her home, or at least to a nearby hospital so she could be watched, were greeted by a colder girl who cared little for her parents, going so far as to flicking them off. The officers explained it could just be shock and to give her some time while they stayed nearby while Umi left their company to head further outside of town to simply bathe in a nearby river. Promptly, so she wouldn't have to deal with loss anymore, drowned herself, her body passing back by her parents on the way to the inn they were going to stay at. She was once more proclaimed dead, this time for good, and cremated.

After her death, Umi continued life as a spirit. She did not linger on Earth long, instead being escorted quite quickly to the Rukongai. Her life there was not pleasant, but it was not terrible either. She managed to get by easily enough with the other children, thieving some, working for others. She dwelt there for what must have been several decades, if not a century before even hearing about the Shinigami and the Seireitei. Her mind, which had come out of shock over the years, though her cold attitude was still intact, was made. She would join their ranks. She was denied entry. As stubbornness would have it, she tried again the next time, and the next time, and the next time, always failing, but always growing stronger. She was finally admitted into the academy nearly thirty years ago, passed in five and then stubbornly, and successfully, entered the Second Division on her first attempt. During her after life, she's had a lot of thinking time on her hands, and as she looks back at how she was, especially now as a Shinigami, she feels more and more certain a Hollow was responsible for the events that took her loved one away and made the sky weep for the tragedy that had happened and the tragedy that made her take her own life.

Classified Records - Combative Information

Basic:

Carried Weapons:
  • Zanpakuto]

Fighting Styles:
  • Zanjutsu
  • Hakuda

Strength:
Being both slim and lacking a defining muscle sculpture, Umi is not physically strong at all by Shinigami standards. Her thrusts, slashes, and other varying sword movements are based mostly on speed and using her momentum to drive her weapon home rather than a standing swing.

Speed:
Speed is Umi's most favored attribute, using her flexibility and small size to its most extreme possible advantage for her. Using her speed, Umi throws all of her little weight into her moving blows or dances around the foe, often using her speed to rush in and then by attackers, leaving superficial to light injuries on them as she passes by, the injuries getting worse as the fight prolongs, aiming for more vital organs.

Intelligence:
Umi is slightly smarter than the average soldier, but not by much. Although she was considered smart by humans, her knowledge as a Shinigami is easily outclassed by some other soldiers and even further so by those with a simple low ranking seat or higher. More oft than not, her stratagem boils down into running for her life and dodging about while whittling away at the opponent.

Stamina:
Umi's stamina is rather high only to allow her to upkeep her swift movements and bee sting like blows. Anyone of a higher rank, as well as a number of the moderately buffer soldiers have more stamina than her, if not solely because they conserve energy by not moving when necessary. Consequently, she can use up her Reiryoku unnecessarily fast, but she tends to have enough to finish off her equal leveled foes depending on what they expect from her. Should she lose, her stamina often ends up giving them a run for their money, if nothing else.

Durability:
Being clothed in the clothing she's in combined with her high movement speed and constant use of her Reiryoku pool, Umi is not very durable. Lacking the armor of some and the pool of energy of others, Umi must be very careful with how she spends her Reiryoku lest she find herself out of stamina early in a fight.

Advanced:

Spiritual Pressure:
Enough to perhaps make a human sneeze if she attempted concentrating really, really, really hard.. Being only a foot soldier, Umi's presence is basically unnoticeable, especially when standing near a source of greater spiritual pressure.

Swordsmanship/Accuracy/Other:
Umi's Swordsmanship is on par with other soldiers, giving her enough expertise to handle herself in proper situations, should assignments given truthfully be on her level. Her accuracy could use mild improvements while moving at her top speed, but her blows are generally in the correct or target area, should the target be unable to move or successfully dodge the intended blow.

Special Training: None.

Personal Abilities: None.

Spiritual Techniques/Releases:

Kidou:
Specialty:

Hado:
1. Shō (衝, Clash)
4. Byakurai (白雷, Pale Lightning)

Bakudo:
1. Sai (塞, Block)
4. Hainawa (這縄, Crawling Rope)

Other:

Zanpakuto Name: Sukai no Shidare (Weeping Sky)
Zanpakuto Type: Elemental
Zanpakuto Spirit:

Appearance: The spirit of the zanpakuto is a large cloud that looks perfectly normal until it begins to move, its appearance becoming more of that of a woman in a long gown with her hands over her eyes, rain falling from them as she speaks.

Inner World: The Inner World of the zanpakuto is a grand expanse of sky and clouds, only one of which is the actual zanpakuto. The sky is, despite the name, almost always clear, only becoming dark and foreboding when the spirit itself is angry at some action or another.

Relationship: Even though Umi knows her zanpakuto's name, she cannot access Shikai due to the zanpakuto's will. Because of this, the two have a poor relationship.

Zanpakuto Sealed Description: The zanpakuto is a small wakizashi with a long red tsuba and black and gold colored hilt. The sheath is also black and wrapped around with a red ribbon tying it to Umi's belt, further held on by a second belt wrapped diagonally around her waist and hips.

Shikai: Sukai no Shidare

Incantation: Lament, Sukai no Shidare

Appearance: A normal wakizashi with a cold steel blade and long tsuba.

Release Appearance: Although the weapon doesn't change in style, the actual blade changes color, becoming like crystal clear water, distorting the view of one looking through it and making the range of the weapon altogether harder to immediately notice without careful attention skills

Abilities: None

Techniques:
  • Naku (Weep): Umi unleashes a compressed wave of reiryoku at a target location at after traveling a set distance, or into a foe, the wave detonates, firing the reiryoku as needles at the ground from above.

  • Gekido (Rage): Umi generates a pulse of energy from her blade in front of her. This pulse can cause enemies to lose balance if they are unprepared, allowing the next part of the ability to hit with more ease. After the pulse has traveled a set distance, a forceful wave will come from above to strike opponents into the ground. This technique can be performed in one, three, and five wave variations with damage varying. The same amount of energy for one wave may be divided into the other variations for weaker waves or more may be used to create more waves of equal damage.

  • Itamu (Mourn): Umi runs a hand over her blade, creating a liquid reiryoku equivalent to three gallons to launch at the foe and pin them down. The strength of the binding varies, depending on how much of the liquid hits and the force of the binding is determined on where it hits. Although unreliable in thought, the move is extremely functional, able to apply opposing force to people, things, and reiryoku based attacks, making it a versatile tool.

Bankai Akai Ten no Shidare (Weeping Red Heavens)

Incantation: Mourn those about to die, Akai Ten no Shidare!

Appearance: Still the normal shape the Shikai maintained.

Release Appearance: The zanpakuto breaks down and reforms, stretching out into a lance, giving Umi roughly twice the range she once had on either side of her. Despite appearing crystalline, and altogether see through with the same distorting effect from before, this lance is even more solid than the blade of her Shikai

Abilities:
  • The Heavens Weep for You: The sky grows cloudy as a spiritual rain begins falling. Although even going so far as feeling wet against people's skin, it does not affect flames, embers, or even the ground. It does, however, affect the clothes of the user and anyone within the area of the bankai's ability. Other than heavier clothes due to the wetness, it causes no other effect, having no other influence over the battlefield.

Techniques:
  • Manji Sansu Ransu (Manji Stinging Lance): Umi focuses her energy into a focal point above her head, firing twelve pressurized bolts of water into the area around her. This technique can be aimed in various directions, but all twelve bolts must be fired at the same time and at the same angle.

  • Kozui Umi charges at a target, surrounding herself in a torrent of water to add force to the blow. She may leave the torrent by swinging her lance upwards as if striking an opponent, however, the water will continue rushing forth to slam into the foe. While in or even near this torrent, Umi is especially susceptible to lightning based kido and zanpakuto, adding to the danger it puts her in aside from just impaling herself on the enemy's weapon.
