Hunting Pirates

While the pride has undergone a change of leadership, Ru's band remains blissfully ignorant of the changes that will greet them when they return home. If they return home. The first three items were shockingly easy to find. Ru had a goddess's feather before they even left the pride, and then the god of fish had given them a tooth from a sea monster called a whale, and then a lion who truly did look like a piece of sky fell on top of them claiming that he knew how to get at the pirate king's treasure. Now the band stands poised and ready to make their move against the Maestros del Mar.

The plan is to sneak in right after sunset, just like they would in a normal raid, leaving all their Stormborn trappings a safe distance away under guard (in other words, any SoA in Ru's band whose owner doesn't post in this RP). Once they're within the pride's borders they will seek out the largest of the caverns, since that is where Kardas (the sky-patterned lion) says the pirate king keeps his treasure. Once there they will each take the largest jewel they can carry in their mouth and leave. This is not an attack, but a stealth mission, and the goal is to get in and out quickly.

How it Works

This is sort of a directed RP with stat checks, but unless the mule tells you to roll for a certain thing, you can otherwise treat it as a regular ORP. You may also be called upon to make decisions, and those will change the outcome of this RP and the overall success of the mission.

Oh, there is one other thing. A few pirates might still be awake. You'll want to avoid them whenever possible since the point of this mission isn't to get into a fight. Ru's band is pretty badly outnumbered in these lands and even though they're not wearing viking regalia/realia, they probably won't pass very well if anyone gets a good look at them.

OOC Notes

This RP will end one week after the GO post, or if the RP goes for 24 hours without any new posts.

There is no post order.

Anyone may participate, even if you do not own a Stormborn on this viking. You may post as some sort of non-lined animal or as a pirate (if you own one).

Oh, and there may be participation incentives.

Ru surveyed the group that he had chosen to come with him for this venture into the pirate king's lands. He had not been able to choose the band that left the Stormborn with him, but he had more or less come to terms with what he could expect from each of them and how he could put them to use effectively. Those he had left to guard the accoutrements that marked them so obviously as Stormborn lions were, in truth, the one he did not feel he could rely on in a time of crisis for one reason or another. He hoped he could rely on them at least to serve as guards.

"Just a few words. We're here to steal jewels from the pirate king. You know the plan for that. We'll be following Kardas' lead, since he knows his way around, but if while you're in there you happen to notice your surroundings, that's all to the good. Someday we'll be back with a larger force and we'll rid the world of this scum."

Vol would say he was talking too much. He made a conscious effort to wrap things up even though there were more details he would like to lay out.

"Above all, try to avoid attracting attention. Even if it means avoiding a fight."

If Galning was disappointed by the restrictions Ru placed on the band, he kept them to himself. In truth, he was just as happy not to be expected to engage in battle any time soon. His cousin Asper had made sure he regretted losing his bet about whether or not Asper had really gotten it on with a goddess, and what Galning had been made to eat had left his stomach unsettled for the past few days.

He had actually considered staying behind to guard the band's furs and beads and bracelets, but nobody had volunteered for that post and Galning didn't want to volunteer if nobody else would. He was positive that doing so would make him look like a coward and he was already the butt of most of the jokes in the band it seemed. No need to add accusations of cowardice to that.

So he sat with his stomach gurgling unhappily and waited for Kardas to take the lead.

Kardas had kind of a vague idea on how to get to the pirate's treasure. He'd spent a little time nearby while passing through the lands, and it was obvious that the pirate lions had a great bounty of goods - fine pelts, pretty shells, cleaned bones, shiny rocks. It'd seemed a good treasure to Kardas. The problem was he only had a vague idea as to where it might be. It's not like he knew exactly where it was.

But he would be gods damned if he acted like he wasn't at least fifty million percent sure about the location of the pirate hoard. If he didn't act absolutely sure, Kardas was certain that he'd be squirreled out, and that was honestly the last thing he needed. Not here, not now, and sure as ******** not in the middle of a possible war.

"Walk fast and don't make eye-contact," he grumbled in clipped tones, stepping ahead of the group as if he knew where he was going (when he really didn't, not that he'd ever admit it). "We're looking for uh. A cave."

Yeah, probably a cave. A big cave, probably; or something, maybe. Kardas had no bloody ******** idea what they were looking for; he could only hope that he was a skilled ******** liar.

So far, everything seemed to be going according to plan.

"It's this way."

He didn't know if it was this way, or that way, or whatever way. He only knew that he was going to get killed if he didn't lead these barbarians to some kind of treasure; with his luck, he'd be dead before nightfall.

His stomach was in utter ******** knots, but he couldn't let on. Couldn't let anyone know that he was a walking ******** lie.

He was drunk. And by the gods he was enjoying his evening. He had no idea that others might be around. Truthfully he didn't care. It wasn't like the Stormborn were here or anything.. He lay in the sand, shifting his body so that he was on his side, staring out at the ocean. That was, until a crab had taken place beside him, pinching him in it's surprise. He jumped up, and groaned. No matter how long he was alive he would never get used to the pinching of crabs. That was for sure.

He shrugged it off, deciding that maybe it was the fates telling him he needed another fermented apple. Oh how he loved his vices. He grinned, and prepared to set course for the Cavern that was known as the pub.

"Shhhhhh, if we're gonna do this, you gotta be quiet!"

"But what if I d---"

"Of course you wanna. You don't want a little gal like me gettin' eated up, would you?"

Flounder shot the slightly older lion a glare that seemed absolutely foreign for her generally soft and friendly features as they continued to move out into the night If anything, Tamu would have thought that she was toying with him. He could have simply ratted the orange spotted youngster out to her father and that'd be the end of this little escapade, but he'd never hear the end of it. No one liked a snitch. Thus, the gray and pink lion, who was no longer a cub, yet not quite an adult, sighed defeatedly and followed Flounder further away from the dens that they rested in in the evenings. The sounds of insects chirping and night birds calling out were the only things the pair could hear, completely oblivious of the danger they might have been putting themselves in.

"Okay, so the goal is to find something we can use to show them we should be in crews already. Treasure or something. Maybe those fruits they like to eat?" The smaller, younger lioness brushed against Tamu's legs before bounding forward playfully, certain that her father wouldn't overhear them at this distance

"I doubt we'll find anything in our own lands, kitten. I'm sure they've picked it through already and I am not escorting you that far."

"Then you'd leave a little cub like myself all alone to get eated up by who knows what?" She knitted her brow and frowned, giving him the most sad expression she could muster.

Jakk wasn't the only one interested in a trip to the caverns that night. Moth was wandering about on the soft beach sand, enjoying the cool air... and the sensation of the fermented fruit he had already gotten his paws on running through his veins. He was an odd lion at best, lacking seriousness and sense, and his fur made him stick out like a sore thumb whenever he popped out of the long grass. Moth was completely immersed in his own head as he mumbled a light-hearted tune.

"We pillage, we plunder, we rifle and loot
Drink up me hearties, yo ho
We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot
Drink up me hearties, yo ho
"

His song was interrupted when he tripped over a bit of driftwood and stumbled chin first into the sand. He let out an 'oof' sound, then began to laugh. Oh, he was a sight, wasn't he? But his laughter suddenly ceased when he realized that his mane was no doubt covered in the stuff now.

"Oh great! The corsairs won't look at me twice like this," he said, sitting up and awkwardly trying to brush the sand away with a forepaw. Ugh, wouldn't it be grand if a little bit of sand ruined his evening?

exclaim Pirate Alert exclaim

All members of Ru's band must roll 4d6 for a stealth check for evading the notice of Jakk, Tamu, Flounder, and Moth.

The first die is for Jakk, the second for Tamu, the third for Flounder, and the fourth for Moth.

Any non-lined animals in the area are not subject to these rolls and may notice or fail to notice the band as their player chooses.

If they roll..
1 - they walk right into the pirate.
2 - the pirate catches a quick glimpse.
3 - the pirate only hears them briefly.
4 - they barely evade detection.
5 - the pirate is unaware of their presence.
6 - they can try to rob the pirate.

Not too far off Ru could hear the sound of voices that very obviously did not belong to members of his band and he flattened his ears to his skull and hissed a general warning to his band to be quiet. He refrained from reminding them again that they weren't here to fight. If they didn't know that by now, well, there wasn't a whole lot he could do about it at this point.

He turned his head just in time to see a tawny lion and duck out of sight, doing his best to put distance between himself and that first lion. Unfortunately, by doing so while trying to keep an eye on the other members of his band he managed to bump into a lion smaller than himself.

"Sorry, mate," he muttered, doing his best to mimic a pirate's manner of speech. "Didn't see ye there."

OOC: Can I do a charisma check or something to see if Tamu believes Ru?

Um. Sure. Do a charisma check, Fey and Aurrie. Each of you roll 1d10. If they tie or Ru rolls higher, his ruse works. If Tamu rolls higher Ru's ruse fails. If there is a difference of more than 5 you get one degree of success/failure which means Tamu either really believes Ru or really doesn't believe Ru.

Other people may do this, too, if they feel it necessary.

Tamu was at first immediately afraid for Flounder. His pale fur stood on end and his eyes widened as another lion seemed to appear out of the blue - he should really have been paying more attention to their surroundings! Flounder didn't notice him at all until he spoke, which caused her to almost immediately hide behind her older friend. The stranger could easily deduce just how old this male was - or rather how old he wasn't. His mane had not yet fully grown in and he still had a youthful air to him. He was still in adolescents and probably did not know every lion in the pride well at this point, nor had his naivety been completely stripped from him. Whatever the case, Ru's gamble worked.

"S'allright, we didn't realize anyone else was awake." He was nervous, not because he realized this lion was a stranger, but because he didn't want to be called out for aiding in this little lioness's adventure past her curfew. He did his best to play it off, hoping not to draw any questions.

"Ya headed to the Cavern? We'll just be on our way, then." He nudged the cub in the opposite direction of the lion. "C'mon, Flounder, let's be outta here."

It had been a while since Ru had been forced to resort to subterfuge and he was almost a little afraid that his gamble wouldn't work. Mentally he criticized his performance, looking critically at his posture and his accent. He tried subtly to mimic the younger lion in both of these as he listened to him speak.

"Eventually," he agreed.

It would have helped if he had any idea what the youth meant when he said the Cavern. The answer he'd given would allow him to go off in the wrong direction, if that proved to be the case, without arousing suspicions. It was much easier to come in with claws and teeth bared, he thought to himself. But it would not achieve his ultimate goal, he reminded himself.

"Keep out of trouble," he advised as he watched the pair of lions.

He hadn't even seen the little cub at first. What if she hadn't bought it? Well, she didn't seem to be raising any protest, so he supposed she would go along with what her brother said. Besides, he wasn't completely convinced that she had noticed him at all.

"If ya see Molly, tell 'er I said hello, okay? And will do." He gave a nod of his head as he ushered the cub away. He wasn't keen on making small talk, but it was no secret around the pride that the youngster had somewhat of a crush on the female captain. Smitten, one could say, and he wanted badly to prove himself worthy of serving on her crew. Of course, Ru had know way of knowing such things and the younger lion gave him a nod and a friendly smile before disappearing into the tall grass, Flounder in tow.

"Well that wasn't awkward."

"Oh shut it, Flounder. We almost got inta trouble and it'a been my head what'd roll for it and you know it." The older male scowled faintly as he nudged her forward.

"Finefinefine, lets just hurry up 'n get a treasure, okay Tam?"
