When you think of 'Alice in Wonderland', is 'politics' the first thing that pops into your mind? Well, if so, do I have the topic for you!

I found this New York Times article entitled Activist Artist vs Pipeline, which brings attention to the environmental concerns of a certain activist group. Interestingly, this group has chosen an Alice-like figure to guide one through their concerns, expressed in a comic found here: What Is Harper Afraid Of?

IMPORTANT NOTE: I know nothing about the issue being discussed here outside of the articles I've linked to, which I have read. That being the case, I have no opinion about this issue either way. The point of this thread is to discuss the involvement of Alice, not the political issue she's found herself involved in. So, no fighting, okay?

So, here's the question for you, guild: how do you feel about a beloved children's character like Alice being used in a political message? Is the use of Alice or other such characters an effective political vehicle? Or are children's characters of all sorts best left out of the political arena?

I do not like it. I am personally sick and tired of politics and politicians. To me Alice is an escape and wonderland is a place for me to imagine and get away from the world. As far as this artist using Alice to get out his I hate oil message I do not see how Alice fits or what she has to do with it? Maybe I am just overreacting but I say to this guy leave my favorite literary Character alone.

I certainly can understand this sentiment. It's clearly just a ploy to get attention... one that worked. But use of Alice in this way didn't really draw a strong parallel, so it was just clearly meant to be gimmicky, not add any meaning to it.

In general, it seems like a low move to me. The artist is probably relying on the popularity of Alice and is just using her for propaganda.

But besides that, out of all the characters they could have used... why Alice? I mean there were other characters they could have used. The Lorax for example though it was used recently. That character was at least created to send an eco message. By using Alice they corrupt the character and the story in whole.
