The event from the night before still weighed heavily on Pitsiarks mind. That lioness that had been with her superior. She'd just died so easily. Now there were only her sons left like little reminders of the horrifying event for Maji and the pride. Pitsiark felt awful thinking of them as such. She couldn't imagine being left with only a whisper of a lovers past. Still, it was a blessing that the pride now had cubs and in the future maybe the mists would be filled with laughter once more.

Her heart felt heavy.

Those cubs. They were going to grow in life never knowing their true mother.

She felt a swell in her heart once more. Sadness bared its ugly teeth in to her heart and refused to let go.

The memory from last night. The image of Maji with those cubs. They were so small. Helpless. They were not hopeless though. Deep down the lioness knew that the pride would do its best to raise the cubs. But it wasn't enough. Not to Pitsiark. They'd grow up closed off from other cubs. Thoughts and ideas spun around the females head. She needed to find Durian and she needed to talk to him about last night. He had been the oracle to see these events.

So Pitsiark did just that. The lioness stood out side of his den area respectfully.

"Durian?" She called.

It had been hard... so hard to see yet another dark omen in the mists. It haunted him through the night and hung about his shoulders like a dark cloud refusing to make its pass over the mountains. A black lion with weary features prowled the mists that night.... it wasn't a god but it was far from mortal The harbringer of death. A figure that Durian's mind knew far too well and would sometimes catch himself searching the corners of his den for in the darkest of nights. One day the shadow would whisper the secret of his own death but that night he had whispered a different name.

He knew, even before they had arrived, that the lioness would not live to see the sun rise. The old Magi was a secretive sort when it came to matters of the heart and unfortunately, it was far from the border that his affections had been expressed. It was far from the borders...far from help that the lioness had fallen. Her young body had been toiled with the burden of a large litter and unfortunately, one too many of the cubs had been born backwards. It had been traumatic... it had broken her.

Durian had returned to his den in silence. Another omen... another failure to prevent it. Why did the shadow hang so closely behind him?

The look he gave Pitsiark was a mournful one. He tried to force a smile to his maw but the expression never met his eyes. "Pitsiark."

Pitsiark mirrored the smile Durian wore but like the male her eyes did not warm. Her sadness for the events that had passed was to heavy. So much sadness had been recorded in these lands and now even more would live on in the paintings of the rocks. This was not Pitsiarks wish. She'd aspired to record the happier times but now...

"I .." She stammered, "I want the echoes of happy playful voices to ring from the mists instead of dread and coldness." It had left her maw before she'd had a chance to even think about what she was saying. "Those cubs... with out a mother." Pitsiark shuddered.

The lion winced his quiet grief and nodded his head sadly. There was no way to help what had happened. What was done was done, the mother was beyond sorrow or pain now. She was among her loved ones, her ancestors, and the one that breathed life into her from the start. The sadness was not for her, but for those she left behind. The old magi and the young cubs that had been left behind.

One of the pride's oracles, a personal friend of Maji, had stepped in to nurse the babies but it had wounded her to do so. Touch was her poison. Just as mists were his. Every seer had their own trigger and some of them feared it. Some of the things they saw were more painful than helpful. Some were downright confusing.

But it was not easy to watch. The cubs would never know their mother. Their sire would always have that empty space. And one wounded heart was bad enough, several rippled through the pride like a single pebble in a formally still pond.

"Wounds take times to heal." He said gently. "The cubs will grow...certainly we will be there to see them laughing and playing in the mists."

It was true. All wounds would heal over time and it was very possible to the young cubs that they wouldn't even know they were missing a mother with how many watchful eyes the pride had. Still, the cubs wouldn't know their true mother and for some reason that broke Pitsiarks heart. There was nothing any one could do now though.

"Laughter in the mists. That is something worth recording," She smiled again but it was no better than the smile she bore before. Sadness still tugged at her features. A lioness was lost to them and her would be loved ones.

"I suppose we'll have to keep an eye for them. And Maji," Mostly for Maji. The cubs were at the very least protected by their own innocence. Maji had a life time of the mists and was not innocent to the ways of the world. If anyone was going to take a hit from this sudden death it was him. But perhaps not all was lost.

"You know I've... always wanted cubs."

Laughter in the mists... it was something that brought a smile to his lips. He wasn't immune to such dreams. He still fondly remembered his own youth. There were always visions, some of them troubling, but to him it was as much a part of him as his mane and claws. Some memories were soft, others were sharp and stung. But in his youth, the memories that sustained him had been the times he would laugh and run about. He'd come home with muddy pelts, leaves and twigs in his mane, and a guilty smile on his maw.

He sighed happily and gave a short nod. "I've entertained starting a family as well... little ones. That would certainly fill the mists with laughter...and the little ones could use some companions their age."

He looked down to the lioness, his eyes softening.

Pitsiarks face lit up to hear Durian agree with her. If it had been in her younger days she may have even done a happy little twirl. But age had jaded such playful tendencies so only the lionesses features shows something a bit more light hearted. The lioness nodded to the lion.

"Entertained the idea." Was repeated, "I am in agreement. I mean, about the cubs... using some friends their own age. We could raise them with our own," The lioness tapped her claws to the ground as if she was thinking. "I think it is the laughter of youth that will bring about the age of happiness for our own."

The older lion's eyes drifted off happily. It had been a while since he had left his homeland. The spirits of those that had come before would want to see him continue the noble line of his kind. Pitsiark was likely of the same mindset. Not just for the happiness of her ancestors and the pride- but for herself. Every lioness wanted a family.... and the thought of seeing little ones running about his paws, bearing features of himself and Pit was a warming thought.

He stepped over to the lioness and gently licked her forehead between her eyes. "I agree. I think we both could use the laughter of the young here."

"And not just for us. But the pride," The lioness rested her head under Durians chin and happily closed her eyes. The thought of little paws pitter pattering of her own flesh and blood was an exciting thought. A little scary, but exciting. Pitsiark had no doubt in her mind that with addition of more cubs they'd be able to make the pride a new for the future generations and their cubs and their cubs and so on and so forth. That was how prides came in to existence after all.

"I am so happy to not have scared you with such a suggestion," The female nuzzled a little further in to the males fluffy mane.

Fin!

The male rested his cheek against Pitsiark's head and sighed happily. Little cubs... she wanted little cubs. His little cubs. Gods willing, they would be parents. The others in the pride would hear laughter again, young voices, and the old sages would have willing ears to hear their stories again. After so much destruction and loss....they could bring life again.

"It is scary. But... in a good way." He nipped at her ear gently. "We're both at that age. It's time we start leaving a legacy."
