The Crash

Note: Jh'huat'hur is the alien name I chose for Napoleon. This will most likely be the only time it's ever used. He will be called and call himself Napoleon here at SA, even to the other aliens.

A light flashed on the mini display next to his sleep capsule as a voice rang over the central PA system. - Entering planetary gravitational pull. Contact in 60. Please return to your cabins and prepare for landing - Jh’huat’hur yawned and rolled over, dragging himself from the tangled blanket and pushing the lid back on it’s hinges. The lights came on automatically, adjusting to their dimmest setting for his eyes.

That nap had not been long enough. He heard his fellow classmates chattering as they walked past his door to their own cabins. They’d probably been in the main lobby watching the planet float by beneath them. The Nova Academy ship was currently in orbit. It had been waiting for night to fall on their target location before closing in.

Jh’huat’hur had skipped Nagataur’s lecture earlier. She was amazing and rather scary when you talked with her outside of class, she was a brilliant fighter and had the most amazing tales. Her lectures on the other hand were BORING. It made him fidgety just thinking about it. It had only been about landing procedures. He figured he’d follow the rest of the students and be fine. No big deal.

The display flashed again, 50 till landing. He could feel the ship’s engines pulsing with the effort of counteracting Earth’s gravity. He flopped back into the padded cylinder, burrowing into the blanket. They had plenty of time till landing there was no reason to strap himself down yet. Might as well get a few more minutes in.

The ship gave an awkward lurch and shuddered violently, waking Jh‘huat‘hur from his slumber. He cried out as the dim glow in his room flared red in warning, making his eyes water painfully. Jh’huat’hur heard one of the girls scream from her cabin. He bolted up, cracking his head on the capsule’s lid before stumbling out of bed only to be thrown against the wall as the ship lurched again. He pressed a panel recessed into the wall, releasing the launch seat hidden behind it.

The ship picked up speed as it’s gravitational resistors shut down. The extra G’s they were suddenly feeling made him nauseous. He could hear the outer hull creaking with the force of their re-entry. Alarms went off thru ought the ship and the sound of the crew yelling could be heard. Breathing masks popped out of their compartments above the launch seats but Jh’huat’hur barely managed to get himself strapped in before the engine quieted all together and the lights flickered out.

Jh’huat’hur shivered in the darkness, the pops and pings of the cooling ship were the only sounds he heard. Vivid horror stories ran through his head. The other students had been sharing their local legends, trying to scare one another. Each swore he knew what happened to a friend of a friend. The terrible, awful things done to aliens stranded on a foreign planet. The ship was leaning to one side, he could tell by the pressure of his safety straps and the pull of gravity. He flinched as the manual lock on his door was released and the door forced back. A dim headlamp scanned the room before a small purple floofie crawled in and onto his lap. It peered closely into his face before unhooking his straps and pointing out the door.

Jh’huat’hur dropped to the ground and slowly made his way out into the hallway, heading towards the first emergency exit he knew of. A couple of the other students and floofies were going the same way but no sign of Nagataur. He slid down the tilted floor out the hatch and into the cool night air.
