Amitola | Sunila | Shell

Amitola swam rapidly about her cave, getting ready to go out to lunch down in the lakeweed. She was looking forward to showing Sunila around - he'd showed up sometime last week, lost and alone, but with a purpose. Amitola's mother, who had long ago passed away, had sent him to find her so she wouldn't have to be alone. They had befriended each other immediately and shrugged off their nearly identical appearances, though they had been a bit spooked at first.

She threw another glance at the tiny shell sitting in the corner, so sad and lonely-looking. She was about to swim back over to it to sing the sweet thing another song, but a paw wrapped around her tail.

Sunila shook his head and released her tail. He had been lying in the cave's entrance for almost a half hour, studying the shells, soft-edged glass, and other shiny things that Amitola kept on her walls as decoration. Framed in one corner with thin wooden planks was a worn mirror. "Ami," he said desperately, "if we don't go soon, we'll never go at all." Though it made him unhappy to have to tear her away from her precious child, he was starving.

With a sigh, Amitola complied to Sunila's request, though cast another longing look at the special shell sitting protected in the corner - of all her pretty possessions, that shell was her treasure, because in it lay her underdeveloped foal, still growing. "Good-bye, baby," she whispered to it. Another glance at Sunila, and she said, "I'll be back soon."

With too many looks over her shoulder to count, Amitola left the cave. Except for the shell and the rest of her sparkly things, it was empty.

The foal inside of the multi-colored shell sensed the departure of its mother, and squirmed a bit. The tiny mouth made an incomprehensible sound, and then a hum. It liked the feel of that hum. It tried again - longer this time. A steady line of a single note. More different? it thought, in the way that premature foals think. It added a few more notes to the hum, and repeated. Like sound, it thought, and wiggled with glee.

User ImageSwimming along in a constant pace, the young, seathi stallion did not seem to pay attention where he was headed. He would usually reside in the deep seas, but feeling the currents urge him forward away from his “home,” the stallion thought he might as well take this journey. Traveling upstream to this humbly sized lake, the stallion enjoyed the change in environment. The lake floors reminded him a little of home, but he could tell it was not as deep as the sea. The water was not as salty, but he did not mind it so much. As he continued to swim forward, kicking his front legs back, one after the other. His tail followed in suit, flicking back before curling back in, to propel him forward. Not realizing where he was headed, the stallion hit a hard surface. After shaking his head to “shake” off the impact, he tried to focus his on the area in front of him. He had to swim backwards a bit to look at the rock-like wall, and looked to see that there was an entrance to the rock-wall. The stallion felt the urge to investigate since he had never run into one of these before. Swimming inside, Yongliang took in the more tightly spaced area. It was darker than the outside because less light penetrated into the cave, and the cave itself made it darker. His eyes scanned the over what was held inside. From what he could see, there were shiny things, and a shell. Coming closer to the shell, he swam back in surprise to hear noises from within the shell. Now, what could this be? Letting out a soft whiny, he tried to goad the shell to make another noise.

The foal heard a soft thud from somewhere outside its protective shell, and then the swooshy sound of someone swimming nearby. It cowered down in a corner of its shell, making a quiet chirping sound as the sounds came closer. A whinny trumpeted softly from nearby, and the tiny foal in the shell went toward the front of its shelter. It emitted a questioning sound at the intruder, wondering whether or not the very male presence was friendly.

Ami, far down below, hadn't noticed the bright blue and orange shape floating precariously toward her den from the lakeweed beds. Instead, she had been conversing with Sunila and her few female seathi friends that also lived in the lake. She only kind of heard the thud when it the foreign seathi ran into the rock wall next to her cave. Looking around, she saw nothing out of place - whatever had made the sound was gone. Returning her attention to Sunila, she continued talking to him, until her ears perked up at a distant whinny from the direction of her cave.

Wheeling around in the water, she saw nothing out of the ordinary, but had to check - "I'll be right back," Ami said to her friends. "I have to go check on my shell..." Leaving it at that and letting Sunila decide whether or not he would follow, she made a beeline for her cave.

Sunila sighed as Ami left for the cave. Following her reluctantly and planning on briefing her on the oddities that came with paranoia, he paddled through the water behind her. "Ami," he said, "we've been through this. There is nothing to threaten your cave here - the shell is safe; everyone is friendly!"

Ami shook her head determinedly. "I heard something," she said, and, not bothering to turn around, made straight for the opening in the lake's wall that she called home.

Yongliang felt a mild throbbing from hitting his head on the stone wall. One of his eyes clenched, indicating his discomfort from the throbbing pain. It was definitely not smart to zone out like that while swimming.

The stallion glanced around the cave, seeing things littering the area. Things that were not natural to the area, but still held a curiosity to them. For some reason, it did not occur to him that the cave was actually inhabited and that he was trespassing in an area he had no business investigating. He merely saw things as taking in the area as things came, and he was very curious about his new "discovery".

What drew his attention most was the shell in a corner. It looked so lonely by itself. The soft noise that came out of the shell made the stallion even more curious about the shell and drew closer to it, leaving a respectable amount of distance between the two of them. "Hello there." The stallion soothed. "What are you exactly?"

Listening carefully, the foal heard the swooshing sounds draw nearer, and then a voice. The pitch was lower than its mother's voice, but it was a pleasant sound. Scooting up into the shell's edges, the foal rocked a little, making the whole protective structure sway in the water. The foal made a little blub blub sound in response to the male voice.

Ami bolted into the cave's entrance as soon as she heard the low, almost inaudible tone of a stallion speaking. Terrified that Bonaventure might've come back for their other child, she bypassed all the shiny things and tail-whipped the stallion that was cooing gently to her baby. "What in the ocean blue do you think you're doing here?" she asked, furious, trying to get a good look at him. Whoever he was, he wasn't Bonaventure. His bright colors were almost neon where Bonaventure had been dull indigo. "What's your name?"

Shrinking back into the shell, the foal withdrew from the noises when it heard its mother's voice. Momma was angry. Not wanting to upset her, the baby suppressed its anxious murmurings.

Yongliang smiled, and watched as the shell moved. What a curious thing. It had to be living to make the shell move and make noises. "Are you a snail? I've seen those around, but not one that talks though." He mused to himself.

Hearing someone swimming towards him, the stallion moved slowly to hear a furious voice. His ears perked in attention as the stallion looked to her with a mildly pained look, feeling his head throb a bit harder from the mare's outburst. "I am exploring, and i really don't know where I am right now." He blinked a couple times before responding to her. "I'm known as YongLiang. You are...?" The stallion as politely and with a pleasant smile on his face.

Taking deep breaths, Ami did her best not to kick him. It sounded like he was a little slow on the uptake, like he didn't understand - like he wasn't local. "You happen to be in my cave, YongLiang. But I am Amitola. And behind you, in the shell - my child." She softened a little, realizing that he had no idea what was going on. She smiled with as much friendliness as she could, but he was still in her room. No one but Sunila and the shell were welcome in this room, the one set deepest in the rockwall. He might be nice, but he was violating her space. As Sunila swam in, she asked him to keep an eye on the shell.

Giving YongLiang a gentle push - one that he could shrug off if he wanted to - Ami nudged him toward the outer room, where she usually received visitors. "What can I do for you?" she asked, trying to remain the polite hostess.

As the voices of Momma and the male went further away, the foal sensed the otter coming closer, humming a quiet lullaby on his pretty voice. Tired of not being able to see anything - of being stuck in the dark - the foal twitched. It was time to get out.

A lightbulb seemed to appear over the stallion's head as he fully understood the mare's words and nodded his head in understanding. "I see. You have quite the lovely home-- and a shell?" He asked curiously,' peering over to the shell he had been talking to prior to the mare coming in. "It's that kind of shell?" The stallion let out a laugh, amused that he did not see that. "I apologize on intruding on you and your home then." He said with a nod, letting the mare usher him out of the room the shell was in. The stallion blinked and nodded in response to getting her name. "It's a pleasure to meet you in these strange conditions." He shook his head to her question. "I'm not sure, I just came in to explore the cave after running into the wall next to it." He said with an embarrassed smile at the fact that he had ran into the wall next to her home.

Ami giggled a little - there was no way he was local; he'd run into the wall... But, she thought, I have no right to laugh. "That happens all the time, running into walls around here," she said kindly. "I still do that, and I was born here. Where exactly are you from, Yongliang?" she asked, curious. He was orange and bright blue - definitely not a pair of colors that would be commonly found in the lake. As far as she had seen, most of the lake seathi were black with a splash of color; at least, she and Nerina were.

"Oh, and yeah, it is that kind of shell," she added, grinning. She was proud of her baby and she loved it, but not knowing what the child might look like gave her butterflies.

Squirming a bit in the back cave, the foal inside the shell looked for a way out. Poking about with its teeny hooves and scrunchy tail, it tilted its head. Eyes that had long since adjusted to the darkness peered around, looking for something to push. Finding the place where the two parts of the shell met in front, the foal jabbed it with a hoof, and squealed a little as light came pouring into her eyes. Flailing blindly about, the foal hit something with her tail that was soft and... fuzzy? The fuzzy thing oofed with a familiar voice. "Momma?!" the foal cried, lost. Running into a wall, it stopped. The best thing to do was to let Momma find her.

Sunila watched in a astonishment as the shell rocked about, and with one final jerk, opened. A little rainbow foal with a mane came out, blinded by the shaft of sunlight that fell through the hole in the ceiling. The baby fumbled about, and hit him in the stomach with her tail. Watching her carefully as he tried to get a new lungful of air, he made sure she didn't run into anything sharp. Once he could speak again, he yelled, "Ami!" at the same time the foal called for her 'momma'.

The seathi stallion smiled a bit in response to hearing the mare giggle over his little mishap with the wall. "Maybe I should just be a little more aware of my surroundings." He said with a slight shrug to his shoulders. "Hmm. I come from waters that are much saltier where there are reefs and such about." He said with a nod, visualizing his birth home.

His mouth formed an 'o' after the mare confirmed it was that kind of shell. "I didn't expect there to be a shell here. Curiosity got the best of me." He smiled. "It is a beautiful shell." He nodded.

Hearing something call out the mare's name caused him to pause. His head turned to the direction of the noise and he turned to look at the mare. "Is there something wrong?"
