To put it lightly, the router in my house is a piece of s**t. It's really old and loves to disconnect a lot. (It just did it while i was typing right now) Occasionally I have to go and restart it, which is a serious pain in the a** since it's at the opposite end of the house. My mother was on the computer and I told her that the router is being crap. "Oh, well my internet is just fine." You're connected to the wall, mom. Not wirelessly. "And your sister's internet is fine too." she isn't AWAKE mom. You don't know what her internet is like for her at this moment. I showed her my connection issue and it clearly read that the router was the issue. She freaks out and is all "DON'T BE LIKE THAT!!!" So of course, I get pissed off. Is it so hard to believe I know what the hell I'm talking about when it comes to the internet connection? I mean, I use it way more than her, on top of that, I deal with my own router at school. Yet she gets all pissed off when I tell her that! Then when i go to unplug the router and let it reset she goes and says "If you ruin our wireless connection--" And now I'm super pissed. Seriously? The hell is with that? I knew I should've brought my own router, because hers cuts out so much. My mother may use computers, but she still knows next to nothing when it comes to how they work in comparison to what I know! -wheeze- I hope their router dies when I leave =_=;

Well, if your mom is going to give you s**t every time you go and restart your router, just go into the admin settings through your web browser, and on most home routers, there is an option to remotely restart it. You will lose access to the settings when it restarts, and have to reconnect it, but it will work, and no one will really know the difference. They'll just think the router crapped out for a second.
Secondly, if anyone knows about annoying mothers, it's me. Don't tell your mom she doesn't know what she's talking about, even if she doesn't. It just makes things way worse. Try to remember that she doesn't know the first thing about routers, or the internet. When you turn something off, she's going to be afraid that s**t's not going to work right. It's like when you have a dog, and you leave to go somewhere, the dog freaks out and gets scared, because it has no concept of the world beyond your house, and it thinks you're gone forever, so it freaks out unnecessarily. Your mom thinks that if you start touching the router, it will be broken forever, and they'll have to call someone in, because she has NO CLUE. Just don't get pissed off at her, even if it's tempting, because it just makes it worse. Prove her wrong by making it work again, and then she'll have nothing to say.
Your bad wireless connection might not be because of the router, it could just be a combination of EMI and the structure of your house. Your room is in the basement, right? If you have a lot of air ducts in your ceiling, and the router is upstairs, that's going to ******** up your connection no matter how good your router is. Think about running physical cable to get past that. If not, it could also be because of other wireless devices like cordless phones that are transmitting on the same frequency and disrupting the connection. In the router settings, look for a "channel" option, and try changing it to something else. This alone could completely fix any connection issues that you're having. One last thing it could be are devices that emit electromagnetic waves. This disruption could be messing up your wireless signal. It'd be like trying to have a conversation with someone from opposite ends of a death metal concert.
If it's not any of that, and your router really is s**t, and you want to get REALLY sneaky, maybe even a little immoral, you can use the admin settings of the router to your advantage, and trick your parents into thinking it's broken. There are plenty of settings to restrict access and make things look like they're ******** up. Set random webpages like Google to be blocked. Set the router to drop Internet access on random days at random times. Remotely restart the router every now and then. The choice is yours, but if you start disrupting everyone's access, you can take advantage of the fact that they know nothing about routers and tell them that the router's REALLY broken now. Since you don't live at home for most of the year, it might not be worth it, but you'll probably be glad you did it come summertime.
P.S. I'm assuming you're using a USB device to get a wireless connection to your desktop? Unfortunately, due to the limitations of USB, your internet connection is going to be negatively affected, and there's no way to change that. If you're on a laptop, though, the above help should probably set your connection straight.
