First I had ADD.

Then I had Tourette's Syndrome.

Then Asperger's, a disorder in the Autism family...

But all it means to me is that I have mental and psychological impairments. That I am mentally lacking in areas most other people are not.

I despise being that way so much... I am so willing to do anything to be rid of my "specialness" that I would willingly part with any positive side effects brought by whatever it is I have. I want to be a "normal" person THAT badly, that I would lose whatever mental boosts I got in some areas as a result of lacking some mental function in other areas.

I even care for those who have not yet and will never be born, I would never wish whatever it is I have on others and do not wish to reproduce. Oh how I wish I could afford a preemptive vasectomy.

I wish I didn't have ADD either, if that's really what I have. I took pills for it, and it worked, but I didn't like that it made my feet cold. Abnormalities do tend to suck. Do you disapprove of your parents having you? Do they all have any of those things? Do you have friends with any of those things, or another mental blahblahblah?

Ya know what else sucks? Hidradenitis and yeast infections. But those aren't genetic I don't think. Well, I know yeast infections aren't, but they came from the antibiotics trying to ease Hidradenitis.

And then, what if your side affects made you even less normal? You seem to be typing normally right now, so I don't know just how abnormal or mentally disabled you really are. I got plastic (not cosmetic) surgery for my Hidradenitis, but now my armpits look horrid and I can't wear sleeveless shirts without a jacket or without getting those trying-to-be-unnoticed glances at my misshapen armpits. Granted, I don't have the pain and odor and nuisance anymore, but I'm still not physically normal.

Hey, I'm left-handed. I sometimes get short-sided for that, but someone said I get to learn languages easier because the language stuff is in both parts of my brain! biggrin BUT DAMN THOSE SCISSORS THAT WON'T WORK IN MY LEFT HAND, GAT DANGIT! scream

And... ok, I'm jumping everywhere, but how is your Tourette's? I watched the HBO thing on that. Do you shout obscenities? Or do you have some kind of tick like OCD?

PS: If any of these inquiries offend you, feel free to erase them from your memory blaugh

My parents didn't have what I have very bad, somewhat mild actually. But I got it from both of them.

I have a selective attention span, like a little kid's. If something does not interest me, I can't focus on it very well if at all. No matter how important it is. It has to have some personal importance or relevance to my interests. In which case I put out an obsessive amount of attention towards whatever it is.

No, only extreme cases get involuntary profanity and I was fortunate not to get involuntary twitching. What I did get that made doctors think I might have ADD, then Tourette's, then Asperger's, is slowed mental development, a selective attention span, small amounts of OCD behavior (which is kind of a plus, people like that tend to notice what others do not), and unusual learning habits (also not necessarily a bad thing as I might learn in ways others cannot). I've had those my entire life, but they keep changing how they manifest themselves resulting in a changing diagnosis.

But I would gladly throw away the obsessive attention to detail and unusual learning habits to be rid of the problems that come with what I described. :/

OMG I have a bad attention ... span? too! I cannot listen to people talking when a TV is on or I'm on the computer. I cannot finish one thing at a time. I'll get distracted with five other projects.

Example: I'll make the water to do the dishes.
I'll remember I had this idea I wanted to do for the French Club and get on the computer.
Instead of firing up Excel, I see Firefox is still open and read a Yahoo! News thing.
I remember I had the dishes, and wash maybe 3 of them.
I then remember that I haven't set up my XBox yet. Instead of finishing setting it back up,
I go through my old mail sitting by the door next to the TV.
One of the junk mail's getting me thinking about this other website I meant to visit.
I get back on the computer and remember the French Club thing.
And all this time I just wanted to clean my dishes which are now sitting in cold murky water.

I can't do one thing at a time.
Is that a bad attention span? The TV and computer taking precedence? My boyfriend really hates that. I do, too. I hate that I have to stop everything to talk to someone important. Everyone's like, "Diff? Diff! Ok, you must be on the video games or watching TV. I'll talk to you later." And I'm like, "NOOOO! D: I'm sorryyyy!" And they don't care.

Tourette's causes slow mental development? Wow. None of the young kids or anybody seemed slowed down to me. Tourette's sure does a lot of stuff.

I kinda wish I had a mild OCD. I'm junky, and not as good about details as I thought. I wanted to be a copy editor, but I kept missing stuff which I hate. That, and it's take me so long to fix it because I'd focus on something irrelevant. But then again, maybe I am, because sometimes when I'm cleaning, I'll focus on something tiny and not get the whole job done. Same with projects and papers.
"The word has to be right in this sentence."
"Maybe the order of the words should be different."
"This isn't the right color, right font, right size."
"This needs to line up with this just right to make this specific shape in this specific section of the page."
It's ridiculous.

I typed too much, didn't I?

The problem isn't that my attention span itself is limited, per se.... I can multitask, but if I have no interest in things, like I said I can't focus on them well if at all despite that multitasking ability.

Slow mental development in this case refers to a person's ability to be aware of the needs and feelings of others, as well as being able to function like someone your age. I was always behind other people in that regard.

OCD didn't always help me. In the past I would insist on wearing a warm jacket or vest well into the summer just because I had gotten used to wearing it during the fall and winter, I couldn't eat food that was touching other food, I even had to watch a TV show or play a video game on two display screens just because I could feed the picture into two display screens.

Heh, reminds me of how I'd wear a coat inside even if it's a more comfortable temperature inside. I just don't feel a need to take it off because I haven't gotten hot yet. So what's the point if I'm not staying here. But then, I'd sometimes go to sleep in the coat, too. Everybody thinks I'm cold, when I'm just not uncomfortable yet.

But I guess that's not the same thing.

My bro would eat food one at a time. At McD's, he'd eat all the fries, all the burger, all the apple pie, and THEN drink all the drink. Didn't quite understand that. I don't understand the touching food thing either, lol. So many people have that issue. Does that mean you don't like smoothies or stews or casseroles either? Jumbalaya? Low Country Boil? Can you eat food with sauce on it? Or stuff like chicken and rice? Do you have to eat the chicken, then the rice? Can it be mixed?

I USED to have the food obsession, I don't anymore.

I liked smoothies, I could eat food with sauce, I actually liked cutting my meat and putting it on my potatoes, I could eat things mixed with rice, but I didn't care for the taste of casseroles. Casseroles were an acquired taste.

But other than that, if two very different foods touched, I would set aside the parts that touched and not eat them.

Asuka, I know this won't be much of a comfort to you, but nobody is "normal". We all have something. We all have problems. We all have limitations.
All we can do is the best we can. That is all we can ask of ourselves.

I looooove broccoli and cheese casserole. And squash casserole. And spaghetti casserole. Baked stuff just rocks.

What does Asperger's cause?
'Cause I remember hanging out with a young autistic child who wouldn't talk to anyone. He'd only repeat stuff from TV, which made me wonder what he'd say if he never watched TV. He'd wander around the house and throw a tantrum if ever whatever he was holding was taken from him.

Edit: Or do you not have it because it was just Tourette's mistaken for Asperger's?

Asperger's is my current diagnosis.

Autism comes in more than one form. If this diagnosis is accurate, I got a mild form, I think people with what I have typically have difficulty connecting with people in real life unless there are common interests to bond over. I am no exception to that. XD

I guess I get along well with people over the Internet so well because I can just say what I have to say and interested people will come to me, rather than me having to figure what I am interested in that the other person is interested in.

Some people with autism have a bad connection somewhere that makes them incapable of audible speech. My parents know a woman whose son never made a sound, but could express himself quite clearly in writing and/or with one of those type and talk machines. He was taught sign language to get around that difficulty.

Hey, that's great stuff. And I bet there is a lot more... you aren't even aware of yet.
I believe that everything has a purpose. Why did I go through all the hell I did as a child? Because I had a child who had the same mental problems that I did. (I never thoughtfully considered not passing on that sh1t to another human being like you have). I believe my purpose for suffering was to learn the tools I would give to my daughter so she would not have to suffer as much. At least that gives me comfort. And she is what I could have been had I not been so very damaged.
My point is that we don't see the whole picture from where we are at in the moment.
Happiness isn't all of life, or even the most important part sometimes. It is the suffering that we learn to endure that brings wisdom and strength.
Your muscles/strength will not grow unless you literally tear the strands of protein apart and rebuild it.

My husband has Aspergers and...he really doesnt care xd I think because he was diagnosed with it so long ago, he has learned to accept it, and is now managing it.

It can never be "cured" So managing is the best we can do.
