August 22 - August 27 2010 This is a writing contest! These two whers pictured above are members of the Watchwher population in Benden and it's a running joke that this gold should become Senior Gold because she clutched a gold egg in the previous year while Benden's Senior Gold hasn't had a gold egg in close to eight years. They're a bit of a sassy pair and while the gold is more mellow then your usual wher, the bronze has a thing about territory. What are you supposed to do? Well, given that information, you and a partner must create profiles for the Whers and their handlers and explain the relationship between the two. Are they friends? Mates? Rivals, even (that bronze looks pretty uppity if you ask me)? You also need to provide a short piece of writing between you and your partner, be it dialogue, a brief RP (no more then 15 posts - done elsewhere), or a story you've both agreed upon. Summary This is a writing contest. It is a partner game - one partner to each person. One entry per pair; post them here. Create profiles for the Whers and their Handlers. Explain the relationship between the two Whers and the two Handlers. Writing something up to demonstrate how they interact. Topic is open. Contest Closes August 27@10pm PST

(warning possibly a rather long post) Profiles:SilverShieldwolf If you can enter. I am going to have a busy day soon. Thanks dear. Character Name: Tsubari Age: 18 Turns Gender: Male Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual Craft/Rank: Weyrbrat/Wherhandler Apprentice History: Tsubari was raised in Benden. His father and mother are wherhandlers, his father at Benden Hold. He was allowed to travel there a couple of times and enjoyed his father’s company. He was taught the basics of being a handler. His mom barely talked about his father; apparently Tsubari is the result from one night of fun. He worked in the kitchens for a while, learning about the Weyr and a lot about the dragons and thought they were a lot of work. Not a lazy person, he believed that dragons were not fully meant for him. One day he was offered the chance at a Wher egg. As soon as he was offered, Tsubari went straight to the other Wherhandlers in the Weyr. He wanted to know all he could before the egg hatched. When he found that there was a girl from Brita Hold getting the same chance as him, he bit off some retorts. As soon as he was introduced to her, the young man was not impressed. The girl looked like a boy if it wasn’t for the shoulder length hair. It could have been because he tried flirting with her, and she looked at him like he was crazy. From then on, he pursued her, normally with trying to kiss or holding her hand. It was mainly to annoy her, and it was great fun. When the eggs hatched, he was surprised to see that she bonded to a Gold. He was in shock that he bonded to a Bronze, and didn’t think anything of what might lay ahead for him. His father was proud and his mother cried happily, when she heard. Description: He is of average height, with short black hair and brown eyes. Tsubari is light to almost fair colored skin due to the sleeping habits of Tsubarisk. His mother always says his smile is the best feature, when he smiles. He only smiles when he is truly happy and his eyes shine as the smile reaches them. His muscles are well proportioned from the running around he did, helping in the kitchen and with the dragons and whers. His clothes are starting to wear out in some areas, mostly from keeping up on his chores and working with the whers. Personality: Tsubari is a flirt, and worse when he has some Benden wine in him. He tries to get a kiss from every female, well except his mother. He is a carefree person, but not lazy. He feels that everyone should be who and what they want, which normally means he wants to get out. He will rush through cleaning and forget that he didn’t finish one area, which is normally his sleeping area and usually got him in trouble a lot when he was 10 turns. Now he still leaves his area a mess, but knows where everything should be, which gets on Tsubarisk’s nerves. Other: Wher Profile: Name: Tsubarisk Colour: Bronze Description: (contest Bronze)He is an average bronze. Tsubari thinks the best of him, for the most part. Personality: As soon as Tsubarisk hatched, he claimed everything as HIS. It didn’t matter that there were other Whers older than him, they were his too. His Bonded is not so happy with this, because it adds that much more responsibility on his shoulders. The first time after Tsubarisk caught Erisk, there were some strong unhappy emotions, and it hasn’t improved much since. He plots with Erisk on getting Theirs to come to an understand, caring relationship. He doesn’t like when unknown others come into his area, regardless of where he may be, and Tsubari has to calm him. Sometimes he uses the flits to bring him some goodies that Tsubari won’t give him. Revel1984 Character Name: Erie Age: 19 Gender: Female Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual Craft/Rank: Wherhandler (Apprentice?) History: Erie grew up around Whers, her parents were wherhandlers at Bitra Hold so Whers are mostly what she knew from an early age. Like every child she'd dreamt of getting searched and Impressing one of the great dragons, but she was also practical, and when subsequent searches came and went, with her remaining at the hold, she didn't mind too much. Instead she worked hard at learning as much about Whers as her parents would teach her as well as any other chores that were thrown her way. Growing up in Bitra hold was, to her, mundane apart from the whers. being small, meant that she was bullied, behind the adults backs as she grew, she went from a pretty sweet toddler, to a mean mouthed teen. She often snapped at people for imagined insults, though her attitude has improved after being told by a visiting drgonrider that her sort of attitude was not one that attracted dragons. When she turned 14 she was offered the chance at a Wher egg, on the condition she was transported to Benden Weyr since they were in need of a spare wherhandler. A boy from the Weyr had been offered the chance at a Wher egg as well as her, immediately she was not impressed by the lad, who seemed to relish annoying her after she shot down his attempts at flirting with her. As it happens they were both succesfull and were allowed to take an egg each, much to the chargrin of Erie, she'd been sure that the other wouldn't get the Gold Wher's approval. She and the other had been taken to the Weyr where she was awed by the sheer energy of the place, and the fact that the Weyr was so easy going comared to the strictness of the Hold, (not that Bitra was all that strict anyway) Eventually the eggs had hatched and she was amazed to bond to a Gold, the boy had gotten a Bronze too, though at the time she'd been too busy feeding her newly hatched Wher her first meal. getting used to the sleeping pattern was easy for her, after all she'd been practically raised by the creatures. Description: Erie is slightly shorter than the average girl her age, she's pretty flat chested too. Plain faced, practially average and nothing special whatsoever, except a cute dimpling to her cheeks when she smiles. Her hair is a muddy brown and dead straight, she likes to try and keep it short, but as a girl, has always been expected to keep it long, so she comprimises by having it no longer than her shoulders. Her eyes are a light hazel, and pretty much considered her only pretty feature. She is well muscled for her size though, working hard where she can. Her clothes are usually torn in some places, from being around her parents whers, and from getting into 'boyish' trouble. Personality: Erie has the tendancy to snap at the slightest thing sometimes, and often if she feels she's been insulted or slighted she will get very annoyed, and it takes the calm nature of her Wher to bring her out of her indignant mood. She wont tolerate anyone making fun of her or others, after being bullied for a considerable amount of her childhood she hates to see others disadvantaged, however saying this, she can be very quick and harsh with her words if she thinks she's right. She adores her Wher, and easily adapted to the life needed of a wherhandler. Often Erisk would be her source of calmness, and slowly the Wher is rubbing off on her handler, and she's much less likely to get hotheaded now, than she was when she was first relocated to the Weyr. She sometimes finds life in the Weyr a bit overwhelming, especially when a dragon rises (which she's not all that keen on) and she's mostly relieved she was never Searched. However despite her Wher when a certain teen is around she gets very snappy, and has to bite her tongue. Secretly though she kind of likes the lad, who doesn't seem to take her comments too seriously. Other:Wher profile Name:Erisk Colour: Gold Description:(contest gold) Erisk is an average sized gold Wher. To Erie she's the best gold out there. Personality:Erisk is a calm and even tempered Wher. What will make her Bonded annoyed, seems unimportant to Erisk. It takes alot to rouse her anger, but if you do, watch out, because this girl doesn't forget it. She has a strong bond with Erie but often seems not to, esecially when her mood so often doesn't match Hers. When it comes to the time she's required to breed her energy is surprising because she seems so relaxed up until the final moments before she takes off. Most often than not she's caught by the same Bronze, which she senses that Her bonded isn't always pleased about, though she see's it as that particular Bronze is just simply the best, although she often has to soothe even him, since he has a tendancy to be as irritable as Her bonded. She can get a little fed up of the Bronze's MINE mentality though as he seems to get rather posessive even when it's not time for her to Run. A short Rp over PM between Revel1984 and SilverShieldwolf:SilverShieldwolf Tsubari had felt the difference the night before. No that would be two nights now. When Erisk rose just that evening, Tsubarisk had not waited to much longer to chase her. Tsubari felt the more demanding MINE at that moment and groaned. It hadn't helped that he was already looking to find a partner for the night, this had just made it worse. He sighed when he looked back at who he had been with. Not that he didn't like Erie, he figured she didn't like him and now with a night of some what passion? He shakes his head, "At least it's not as intense as the dragons." Erie was usually alone with just her Wher for company in the early twilight, the low light before the full darkness of the night. When Erisk shunned her Bonded and took off at a run, bellowing, Erie sighed "great" she muttered at the same time she spotted a figure heading her way. She figured she'd better get up and at least make an effort to watch the Run, though she had a strong feeling who it would be that was going to catch Erisk. Waking the following morning she glared at Tsubari "it was just a convenience, since, as you put it, it's nothing like dragons rising" she snapped at him, getting dressed, she stole a long glance over at Tsubari and the smallest of smiles crept the the very corner of her lips. *i guess he's not all that bad* she thought to herself, spying his well muscled form though she'd sooner eat a raw wherry egg than EVER admit it to the other. At the back in her darkened kennel Erisk rumbled smugly, and curled slightly into the Bronze that had caught her. SilverShieldwolf Tsubarisk laid his head on Erisk, as he watched the two humans. He felt that his Bonded enjoyed the time spent as much as he had with Erisk. Tsubari watched her from the corner of his eye. He made sure to take in the messed up hair because he didn't think there would be many more times like this first one. As he pulled his shirt on, he fell back on the bed and landed right at her thigh. "Yes, it was such a fun convenience" he said with a lazy smile and kissed her bare shoulder as he got back up. He moved quickly to the table and poured to cups of klah for them. As much fun as it is to annoy her, he really did like her. The snappy remarks always made him smile later on when he thought of her. Erie tensed when he turned back and kissed her shoulder, however nice it had felt, she was not used to affections like that. She ran her fingers through her hair and put her shirt on, getting up off the bed "don't enjoy yourself too much, as soon as night falls again you're taking that Bronze beast back to your own quarters, if you get any 'urges' again, find someone else" she said, but the tone in her voice (that she tried to keep out) said , that despite her words, that she probably felt otherwise. Explanation of relationship:Basically, the Whers were hatched almost at the same time, and bonded strongly to their human partners. The whers themselves have a very good relationship in which nearly every time she Runs, Erisk is caught by Tsubarisk, (since he's claimed her as his anyway .. hehe) Erie on the other hand seems to find Tsbuari extremely annoying, to the point she will go out of her way to avoid him, the only time he ever catches her in a somewhat mellow state is when Erisk is due to Run, a couple of days before Erie will 'soften' due to the change in her Wher's mood, while not like a dragon she feels the need for human contact at these times, rather than using all her awake time on the Wher.

I WAS GONNA SAY SOMETHING WACKY ABOUT HOW LONG THIS IS BUT I THINK YOU KNOOOOOW~ - PS: We're so sorry. ;-;Murphys_Law Character Name: Zhac Age: 25 Gender: Male Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual Craft/Rank: Wherhandler/Journeyman History: Zhac was born at one of Benden’s minor holds, which, coincidentally, was a miner hold as well. Zhac’s father smelted copper from the nearby mines, and his mother sold a cook’s meatpies at a stall to hungry miners. As a boy, Zhac imagined his future in the mines, with a shovel or pickaxe in hand. The only exception to this earthy family was Zhac’s older sister, Rava, who dreamed of becoming a Harper. The family doted on the sweet, dreamy girl, and Zhac harbored no bitterness about his parents saving to have her sent a proper Harper hall, since his lot was already determined. However, her health was frail and for several turns her health waned until finally, she died after much suffering. Rava had been the heart of the small family, and tension followed her death. Zhac, always a quiet boy, became more withdrawn and when his parents gave him Rava’s school funds, he insisted on putting the money toward buying a wher egg and getting away from his sister’s deathbed. So, at 12 turns, he was sent to a mine with a healthy population of whers and put to learning how to handle the beasts. There he met an older, pale boy name Lukah, who quickly claimed the quiet youngster as friend. Zhac liked him well enough, but it was an unfortunate twist of fate that brought him to truly trusting the older lad, who had to a bronze wher. One day, Zhac had left his tools deep in the mine shafts and asked Lukah to go with him into the mine with his sharp-sighted wher and help him find his things before he had to admit fault to an adult. The glows they took were failing though, and in the dim light they became lost and accidentally triggered a cave-in. The shake was minor, but injured Zhac and it took Lukah’s help to dig him free and get him out of the mine. Not wanting to get his friend in trouble, Zhac took sole blame for the incident when he had to explain his wounds. He was sternly reprimanded for his recklessness and put on probation for a half a turn. All those months doing menial tasks for the minors taught Zhac obedience, and when he resumed training he earned a reputation for hardworking and diligence. The good record he built over that one mistake and Lukah’s favorable opinion of his worth (as well as the money from his sister’s death) eventually entitled him to a gold wher’s egg. Not long after Zhask matured, he was asked to take the queen to another mining area near Igen and help strengthen the sparse wher population there. Eventually he sent word asking about Lukah, but his friend had left the area. Without a point to return to, he drifted then, changing homes every few turns to ‘improve the breed,’ though truthfully, he never made attempts to settle. Eventually travel took its toll and he found a home at Benden Wyer. For the last turn and a half he’s ‘settled’ in a rootless way there, but he may begin to appreciate his home now that Lukah has arrived. Description: Zhac is average of height and average of weight, and that only sets precedence for the rest of him. His hair is a dark, mulch-brown color and his eyes, though blue, are so drained looking that the hue gives no interesting impression. A waste of blue eyes, he is also a waste of fair looks. Turns of rarely speaking or displaying emotion has given his face a stern look that will turn likely turn wooden with age. The moment rarely comes, but Zhac has a strangely sweet boyish smile and laugh. Laughter is the only time he looks shy or unsure though, for the rest of the time he moves about as confidentially as if he were in a different world. He wears faded leathers and obviously dresses for comfort rather than looks. Personality: Zhac likes to think of himself as simplistic, a man who goes from one job to the next with dedication and little thinking. He keeps his own counsel, and his non-responsive attitude can make him seem standoffish, though he doesn’t actually mind incessant chatter – he just has little to say in response. His strong-but-silent attitude makes him a good worker and endlessly loyal to a cause. He takes orders and performs them with as few questions as possible. He holds to his gruff exterior because beneath it, his emotions are repressed and disturbed. Not liking the inner workings of his own mind, he tries not to think about feelings of any sort much, but not understanding himself is likely why he is still tortured by imagined passed misdeeds. He feels a powerful guilt about outliving his cherished sister, and for later leaving his parents poor and bereft of their only remaining child shortly after her death. Despite having the opportunity, he never has returned to see his parents. While he lacks that courage, he has no shortage of physical courage. From working in unstable mines to standing against Lukah’s testy wher to pulling a caravan’s runner beast through a stormy night, he doesn’t mind risking himself so long as there is reason for it. And it’s hard to say if he’s desperate to prove something to himself or if he faces danger with passivity for a more hopeless reason. Other: Zhac enjoys listening to music, but very sweet or sad songs make him restless and ill-at-ease. Wher profile Name: Zhask Color: Gold Description: Zhask is average sized for a gold wher, which is to say huge, and her frame is especially blocky. Even for a wher, she’s an ugly thing to look at, with especially crippled wings (she can’t even glide with grace) and ragged ridges on her face and spine, and her burnished, well-kepy hide is her only saving grace. Personality: This queen doesn’t need beauty to command. There is power and certainty in her attitude and stance. Her confidence is what lends her an indifferent benevolence toward humans and other whers, and she has no mind for the presence of others – except for her bonded, who she treats like a hatchling, and the bronzes she likes and harasses with endless bellows and screeches for attention. Sergeant Sargent Character Name: Lukah Age: 30 Gender: Male Sexual Orientation: Straight Craft/Rank: Wherhandler/Journeyman History: Born into the household of a wealthy Benden family, Lukah grew up with an excellent education and ample opportunities ahead of him. But that was almost not the case. When he was still a babe in his crib an intense fever griped him and nearly claimed his life. As a boy Lukah frequently fell ill and, since he also burned easily, this kept him indoors most of the time, reading or practicing music to pass the time. These early years shaped him into a sweet, quiet boy, mature for his age. After seven turns his immune system improved, though his skin still burned easily in the sun, and at ten turns his parents decided he was strong enough to apprentice as a wherhandler in Benden’s mine. Because he wanted to help people, he chose to work in the mines over becoming a wher breeder. At age sixteen (going on seventeen) he met Zhac and the two quickly became friends. Lukah treated him just like one of his younger siblings, looking out for him and giving him advice when he couldn’t go to a master. At eighteen Lukah received his first wher, a bronze named Lukask. During Zhac’s probation after the cave-in incident, Lukah visited as often as possible. They began to talk about their lives outside the mine - their families, their aspirations. Despite the age difference Lukah began to see Zhac as more than a surrogate little brother and their friendship truly cemented. Later when Zhac was ready to receive a wher of his own Lukah vouched for him, which helped Zhac in getting his gold. After Zhac left to join the mine in Igen Lukah joined a caravan to travel the country. Although he fell in love with Pern on his travels he also faced many hardships. The first was the loss of his friend Brogan. Lukah met Brogan when he volunteered to join a caravan leaving Benden for Keroon. Quite literally born on the caravan, Brogan took Lukah under his wing and the two became fast friends. One year later, in route to Igen, Brogan was badly injured during a freak storm while trying to calm a frightened herdbeast. Lukah was right beside him when the animal suddenly reared up and trampled Brogan, breaking several ribs. Had they been closer to Igen Brogan might have survived. Lukah believes he could have saved Brogan had he acted more quickly. To make matters worse, when the caravan arrived at Igen Lukah discovered Zhac was no longer there. Lukah didn’t know if he would ever see him again. Although discouraged by the loss of two friends Lukah resolved to push on, yet the stress of loneliness combined with his relative anonymity outside the caravan led him to take up vices. Eventually the winding road turned back to Benden where he was surprised to find Zhac waiting for him. Description: Light brown hair and striking, dark grey eyes. He’s light skinned and comes home red around the cheeks after a long day in the sun, for he burns easily. He stands about six feet tall, muscular and lean from travel. He takes good care of his appearance most of the time, even on the road, though he often has to make due with little. Personality: Lukah is a gregarious, well meaning guy who loves to be around people. When he makes new friends he quickly takes on the role of the big annoying brother who always looks out for you and showers you with wisdom whether you need it or not, and he’s managed to taint many friendships by coming off as a know-it-all. He preaches about high moral standards and comes off sounding a little desperate, even hollow, given the difficulty with which he follows his own advice. When women are involved he’s at his worst, loving them and leaving them, often without so much as a goodbye, treating them as objects, although it’s their attention he loves the most. He makes up excuses for himself to avoid feeling bad about what he does. Emotionally Lukah is a mixed bag. He normally keeps his problems to himself because he believes he’ll sound like he’s complaining, unless there’s someone he feels comfortable talking to. Even then it’s easier to get a wher to fly than convince Lukah to accept help, especially when he needs it most. Generally he works his bad feelings out through physical labor or in private playing his gitar, a hobby he’s had since childhood. He comes off as easy going most of the time, leading some people to believe (incorrectly) that he has no problems. He loves to joke and tell long stories. If ever deprived of social contact he would likely lose his mind in less than a week. If there’s a problem to be solved you can be sure Lukah will go for the most practical approach. He hates to complicate a simple job. For being born into a wealthy family with parents in high social standing he comes off as surprisingly down to earth and manages to get along with just about anybody, so long as they can put up with his rambling and ‘sagely’ advice. His appearance of being ‘down to earth’ comes from his practical way of thinking, which has the unintentional affect of masking the arrogance that feeds his self-confidence and is the cause of all his problems. Most people who know him well enough to see his faults never figure out whether he sincerely wants to be a good person or just wants to appear as one. Other: Wherhandling is in Lukah’s family. Wher profile Name: Lukask Colour: Bronze Description: Average sized for a bronze, his tough skin is relatively unblemished as he hasn’t been on a run since Lukah joined the caravan. Personality: Lukask is a big tough bronze and Zhac’s biggest competition. Always jealous of his handler’s friends, he snarls at anyone who stands too close to Lukah and would try to force himself between them if not for his training. Even with his training he obviously lacked the temperament for working in the mines, though Lukah only realized this when they joined the caravan. He may throw his weight around, but unless you’re another watchwher his bark is worse than his bite. When no one else is around he dotes on Lukah like an adoring puppy. RP linkExplanation of relationship: From Lukah’s point of view, Zhac is both someone he can look out for and someone to listen to his problems when he doesn’t think anyone else will. The sad truth is that Lukah does care an awful lot about other people and Zhac seemed to need a friend, but Zhac is much more than an outlet for his hero complex: he’s Lukah’s right hand man, the one he can always depend on. Zhac has slowly become aware of his ‘use’ to Lukah, but he makes no qualms over it. Part of this is because if he does not think Lukah is entirely ‘good.’ He at least believes the man is ‘good enough’ and does what he can to assist him. The other part is because Zhac secretly carries his own guilt and doubts his self-worth. He is attached to Lukah’s subtle approval and feels loyal to him. Basically, these two are heterosexual soul mates.
