Hoy! I'm Icy! *waves*

I'm rather new at sewing as an art form. I made a pillow in third grade and in Home Ec. once, but those were under teacher guidence!

So, I'm looking for some tips and tricks that you older and more experenced sewers have picked up during the years! My ears are open and I'm ready and willing to listen to anything you say! blaugh

I think the most important thing you can do to get better at sewing is to read the manual for your sewing machine and learn how to use everything about it. I wish I would have done that with my sewing machine becasue now I don't know how to use the button tool soI have to use other things to keep my clothes together.

An important piece of advice--Make sure you buy everything that your pattern tells you to: not just the cloth, but the thread, interfacing, fasteners, tape, boning, or whatever else it calls for. 3nodding

That's all I can think of at the moment.

If you're afraid of sewing machines, it's best to take a beginners class at your local fabric store. That's what got me up and running with my antique Singer (a very scary machine, I tell ya!). And get to know your machine before you do any big projects.

*stares at her closet full of fabric* Umm, actually I try to avoid doing anything on my machine since I don't know anything about it and I don't really know what I'm doing *falls over*

When working with a sewing machine for the first time, it's a good idea to practice a bit before hand. Take a scrap piece of cloth and just run it through, twisting and turning it. You'l get a better feel for the speeds of you machine so that way you won't mess u when you actually have to so go sew it (and I speak from personal experience...)

It's like driving a car. Don't go too fast at first, and if it gets out of control, take your foot off the pedal.

(And if you can't drive, well, neither can I, but it sounds like a good metaphor. sweatdrop )
